Once again this year the children of Bright Sparks Montessori and
their families gathered together in Faungorth’s Activity Centre for
the annual Big Toddle for Barnardos. This sponsored ½ mile
toddle for preschool children takes place in May and June each
year to raise money for Barnardos’ Better Start Program, which
aims to help disadvantaged toddlers and preschoolers throughout
Ireland. Thankfully the weather was very kind and a great day
was had by all. Most importantly the children were able to raise
an amazing 1,565 for this great cause.
Event organiser Miriam O’Sullivan thanked all the children and
their families for raising such a fantastic amount of money and
also made special mention to Jack and Owen O’Shea of
Faungorth’s Activity Centre who once again gave them the use of
their fantastic facility.

St Patrick’s Women’s Group
Here we are in July and you’d never know it would you? We are
still having our coffee morning every Wednesday from 11am at
Brook Lane Hotel. We are keen to have as many new faces as
possible. We have lots of laughs, some serious discussion and we
know that people really value this once a week drop-in for chat
and a coffee.
I want to add something to our newsletter. I would like to have
some tips that we can all share. This is one to start us off, Cling
film is much easier to use if kept in the refrigerator. I’m sure you
all have lots of useful hints. Do email them to me

Talking about ticks…
Ticks are tiny spider-like creatures which are commonly found in woodland,
moorland and other grassy areas, particularly in damp undergrowth. The
reason why we should pay some attention to those little insects is that some
of them can transmit Lyme disease to humans with a tick bite.
Lyme disease is an infection caused by a spiral-shaped bacterium called Borrelia burgdorferi.
If ticks feed on an animal infected with Borrelia burgdorferi they will also become infected and
can pass on the bacteria to people and domestic animals.
About 10 to 15% of ticks in Europe are infected and research has shown that ticks collected
in the areas of County Kerry, Galway, Connemara and Wicklow carry the bacteria. Actually,
recent estimates suggest that there are at least 50 – 100 confirmed Irish cases of Lyme disease
per year.
Ramblers, campers, mountainbikers and people who work and walk in forested, grassy areas are
at greatest risk of being bitten by ticks and of going on to develop disease. The infection is
generally mild affecting only the skin, but can occasionally be more severe and highly
debilitating.
The first symptom of Lyme disease is often a rash (erythema migrans) that can appear 3 – 30
days after the tick bite and spreads outwards from the initial bite site.
People can also complain of “flu-like” symptoms such as headache, sore throat, fever, stiff
neck, fatigue, muscles aches and joint pain. Occasionally, there may be some serious symptoms
developing at a later stage involving the nervous system, joints, the heart and other tissues.
Lyme disease can be treated with antibiotics. They are generally given for up to 3 months to
ensure that the bacteria have been killed. The best protection against Lyme disease, however, is
to protect yourself against tick bites when walking in grassy, bushy or woodland areas. Make
sure your arms and legs are covered, wear long trousers tucked into socks or boots. Wear shoes,
not sandals. Also, consider using an insect repellent containing DEET. At the end of the day,
always check your and your children’s bodies thoroughly for attached ticks including skin folds
such as armpits and groins. If however, you have been bitten by a tick, do not panic as only a
small minority of the insects carry the infection. In general, the longer the tick has been
attached to the skin, the greater the risk of passing on the bacteria. Remove the tick ( ideally
with tweezers) by gripping it close to the skin and wash the area afterwards with soap and
water. If you remove it within the first hours after a bite you are very unlikely to develop Lyme
disease. However, if rash or other symptoms develop later on, see your GP and let him know
that you have been exposed to ticks.

IDA must prioritise Kerry for
investment and Job Creation
Concern at Government Rejection
of Cancer Care Bill
I was disappointed that the Government
rejected a cancer care bill proposed by Senator
and Oncologist Dr. John Crowne and my
colleague Sen Marc MacSharry. This Bill
attempts to make the provision of cancer
drugs more efficient and to set it within
simple parameters. The guidelines laid down
would mean that patients who need a
particular treatment would get it, as the
provision would be on a statutory footing. It is
time patients were put first, however, the bill
was shot down by the present Government
parties in its second stage of the Seanad.
Possible Garda Station closures
must be clarified
A number of the Garda district headquarters in
Co Kerry could soon be facing downgrade and
cuts to Garda numbers. The Minister for
Justice Alan Shatter has confirmed that a
targeted review of district headquarters is
underway. County Kerry has 4 district
headquarters, based in Caherciveen, Killarney,
Listowel and Tralee. There are strong fears
that some of these will soon be stripped of
their district headquarter status, resulting in a
loss of garda numbers and resources locally.
This is in addition to the review of small rural
Garda stations, which is also likely to lead to
more station closures across the South.
There is no doubt in my mind that this latest
'review' will certainly lead to the downgrading
of district headquarter garda stations in this
region.
He has already closed 39 stations in his first
round of cuts earlier this year. The Minister is
now in the process of considering closing
more small stations, while separately
reviewing the status of all 109 district
headquarter stations around the country.
I am currently pushing Minister Shatter to
reveal when this review will be complete and
how exactly it will impact on our garda
numbers across Co Kerry. Since taking up
office, Minister Shatter has been consistent in
his attack on community policing and he has
targeted Garda resources in remote rural areas
in particular.
The station closures and downgrades that have
already taken place this year have certainly

Kerry and the south west under the IDA
following the revelation that there were no
IDA sponsored visits for Kerry so far this year
and only two in all of 2011.
I find it incredible that not one potential
foreign investor has been taken by the IDA to
visit Kerry so far this year. It is clear that
there is a failure when it comes to regional
spread of IDA development, shown by the fact
that most of the visits so far this year took
place in Dublin.
Kerry has shown that it is a place where
international companies can do business and
succeed. There is a strong basis for the IDA
and the Government to demonstrate to new
investors that Kerry is a county to consider
and one where they can succeed. Kerry offers
a gateway to the south west and access to a
huge added market for potential investors.
There are over 16,000 people on the Live
Register in Kerry and a small number of key
investments through IDA-supported
companies would have significant impact on
employment through knock-on investment and
increased spend in the local economy.
We need to see a change of approach from the
IDA and the Government during the
remainder of 2012. With the fair share of
Government and IDA time and effort, I
believe Kerry is a county which can attract
companies that can make the county their
home and one where they can flourish.
The Government needs to redouble its efforts
to ensure there is a better regional spread and
that potential investors are given a range of
location options. There is a strong skill base in
Kerry and across the south west and I believe
the region would be attractive to companies
looking to locate in Ireland.
Bill to strengthen local
Broadcasting welcomed
I welcome legislation proposals published
recently by my colleague Éamon Ó Cuív
which would strengthen and protect local
broadcasters and recognise the public service
contribution they make.
This legislation will ensure there is a greater
recognition of local independent broadcasters
and the public service role they fulfil in the

communities across the country. A key
provision of the Broadcasting (Amendment)
Bill 2012 would see the television licence fee
reduced by 15% and open up access to
funding for local broadcasters for the first
time.
I know from my own work in the constituency
that local broadcasters play an essential role in
highlighting issues of concern in the
community, promoting local sporting events
and protecting our local heritage – issues that
would often not draw the attention of national
broadcasters. This is a great public service
and it should be recognised in that way. I
look forward to seeing the legislation brought
before the Dáil as soon as possible.

work men have completed the walls and will
be returning later in the project for some
minor works. The roofing contractor is now
installing the necessary fixings for the steel
roof trusses to be erected. On completion of
this phase the cladding will be attached
allowing the electrics, plumbing and
plastering to begin.

The annual trip by Kenmare Trout Anglers Club up to the Caha
Lakes was marred by a small accident. On the descent from the
lakes one of the members lost his footing and fell, banging his head
in the process which dazed and disorientated him. Anyway, the good
news is that after getting him down to the cars and a trip to hospital
for a check up he was deemed from the accident to be fine, except
for a few bruises, although matters could have been a lot more
serious. The bad news was that one of his blood tests showed up
another medical problem of which he was totally unaware and for
which he is now being treated so I suppose there was a good side to
the fall. We all wish him well.
The same lakes were the scene of one of my bad frights. This
happened about twenty five years ago. A local business man, who
was an avid angler, told that me one of his big wishes was to climb
up to, and fish, the Caha’s. As it happened I was thinking of going up
there myself so I invited him to come up with me on the following
Sunday. I had a Toyota van at the time so, picking him up early in
the morning, I drove back to Lauragh, over the Healy Pass Road,
almost into Adrigole and then up to Glen Lough where the van was
parked. Loading ourselves with our fishing gear we started our

Dauros, the Kenmare Sailing Club is a group
of enthusiasts who first got together last year
to sail. The club is open to both experienced
sailors and novices alike.
Members of the club can store their boats
at Star and a safety boat is always on the
climb. Now there is a rough track up the mountain, in those days
there was none so it was a tough hard climb up benches and rock
terraces.
We were about three quarters of the way up when my companion
said, ‘I feel very ill. I am getting an attack.’ He was vomiting and
falling on to the ground.
I nearly collapsed myself with the fright here I was, up in the
wilderness with a man I thought was in the throes of a heart attack.
To make matters worse it started to rain. What to do? I pulled him
into the shelter of some boulders and made him as comfortable as I
could in the circumstances, covering him with his and my jackets and
headed off down the hill in the direction of the nearest house which
was a good two miles away. (We do not realise how useful mobile
phones are nowadays, familiarity breeds contempt). I was shattered
by the time I got there but they could not have been more helpful.
Two of them and another neighbour plus myself headed back up the
hill. My buddy had improved slightly and we took turns linking him
down to the van. ( I was sure we would have been bringing down w
corpse). He then told us that he suffered from a medical condition
called ‘Meneires Deseise' which affects your inner ear which in turn
controls your balance. It is your inner ear that makes you sea sick, or
car sick, and this condition exacerbates the situation and obviously
the height and hard climb had affected the poor man. After a rest he
was inclined to go back up. No bloody way! Thanking our helpers, I
believe he sent them a reward afterwards. No Hi Ace van ever came
so fast from Glen Lough to Kenmare where I delivered him into the
care of his wife, I spoke with him about our trip only a short while
ago. He is still fishing, his ear problem is cured and by the sound of
him, he would still love to have a days fishing on the Caha Lakes.
The Fishing is good on both sea and fresh water. I was even
shown a picture of a skate and small shark caught off the end of the
pier. Thanks to all the well wishers on my recent health set back. I
hope to return to fishing full time in the near future.

of the Irish Cancer Society and
Bonane Community Council.
Denis aims to shear 300 lambs

is a challenge yet to be achieved
by any Irish person under the
age of 21.

Denis already has an All-Ireland title
under his belt in shearing and recently was team captain of the Irish
sheep shearing team in Scotland at the International development
test where they achieved first place.
The proceeds of this event will go equally between the Irish
Cancer Society and Bonane Community Council. Denis says “I am
looking forward to doing this event, it is for two causes close to my
heart on a local and national level, it would be of great pride to be
the youngest shearer in Ireland to achieve this challenge”.
Denis looks forward to welcoming all his supporters on the day.
Alongside the sheep shearing Bonane Community Council will host
a family fun day from 12noon to 6pm with loads of entertainment
for children and adults alike, followed by a pig and spit and local
entertainment. At 9pm a Barn with fully licensed bar will
commence. Music by Neil and Declan and local DJ Martin Reilly,
who will take you into the wee hours.

Kilgarvan Show Society extends a warm
welcome to one and all
Kilgarvan Show Society extends a warm welcome to
one and all. This year our show will be held on
Sunday August 5th 2012, we are indebted to Kieran
Traynor Riverside farm who has provided the venue
for this years show this is a magnificent venue
overlooking Kilgarvan parish. This site is a major
factor to our show with a minimum of walking
distance to our show field as parking areas are all in
adjacent fields.
The organising committee are indebted to our loyal exhibitors
who support us year after year, and to our generous sponsors for the
support they give us every year. We are also extremely grateful to
our wonderful workforce and hard working committee who
guarantee that everything is ready for show day, and ensure the
smooth running of the show on the day.
Come along and see for yourself the wonderful array of
competitions featuring Horses, Ponies, Donkeys, Cattle, Sheep,
Goats, Poultry, Pet Corner, Dog Show, Cookery, Craft, Flowers,
Photography, Farm Produce, and vintage, there will be a display of
trade stands in attendance on the day with something to suit
everyone.
The big attraction on the day is the Puppy Parlour Munster dog
final, this is the third year of this final and every year it grows
bigger and bigger with a huge attendance of dogs from all over
Ireland the prize fund is 400, we are indebted to Eileen Murphy
O’Shea of the Puppy Parlour kenmare for sponsoring this event.
We’ve been trying to capture what people love most about the show
and haven’t managed it, that’s because no one single thing makes it
special. What it does offer is an electric mix of the expected and
unexpected which enthrals the spectators who flock to Kilgarvan
coming back year after year.
For those who think it’s just cows and tractors, then what can we
say? Be prepared for an unexpected experience like no other. We
guarantee that if you come, you’ll be back again.
Agriculture was originally the show’s main focus but this has
broadened considerably over the years to adapt to Ireland’s
changing culture. However, Kilgarvan show still promotes an
enhanced awareness and positive appreciation of our heritage,

Taobh Linn Social Centre for older people hosted Afternoon Tea as part
of Kenmare Food Carnival’s programme of events on Friday 13th July
Taobh Linn is a Sheltered Housing scheme for the Kenmare area and
is managed by Cluid Housing Association. Located opposite Kenmare
shopping complex on Railway Road, Taobh Linn supports people to
live independantly in their home for longer and true to it's name, it
helps keep our older generation close to us and within their own
community.
Taobh Linn Social Centre is an additional on site facility run by
Kenmare Community Care. The social centre provides a meal service
to both Taobh Linn residents and older people within the Kenmare
locality. Residents and neighbours can get together and socialise over
a home cooked 4 course meal in the centre. The social centre also
provides a wide range of activities such as arts and crafts, music, bingo
and physical exercises.
The Carnegie Arts Centre will launch its innovative Friends of the
Carnegie scheme on Friday 27th July with a wine reception and a

Kenmare Pedestrian Crossing- Railway
Road:
Further to my notice of motion I am glad to confirm
that the pedestrian crossing will be put in place in
August as opposed to next year when road works in
the vicinity will be finished. It is essential for the
safety of residents of Taobh Linn Residential facility,
kids and their parents visiting the playground, shoppers
and residents of the area.
Lauragh National School: 150th
anniversary
I was glad to have attended the 150th Anniversary of
Lauragh national School recently. Well done to
Principal Paul McCarthy and all involved for outlining
the great history of the school and I wish them all the
best for the future. Lauragh like many other small
schools if facing great difficulties in keeping its
numbers up and ultimately staying open. I have
requested Brendan Griffin TD to make a special case
for such rural schools and how it is essential that they
are retained due to their peripheral location.
Tahilla National School:
Minister Jimmy Deenihan, his first cousin living in
Tahilla Mrs Geraldine McCarthy and I visited the
school recently and met with many of the parents and
pupils. Principal Johanna Galvin showed us the
wonderful school including the extension which was
added a few years ago, Tahilla NS face similar
problems to Lauragh NS and have difficulties meeting
the required numbers, I have asked Minister Deenihan
to request the Minister for Education not to further
increase the minimum number of pupils threshold, as it
is essential for rural communities to retain their local
national schools.
Kenmare Artists Guild:
Best of luck to Kenmare Artists Guild on Henry Street
which was officially launched on 14th July. Kenmare
has an abundance of top class local artists and it’s
great to see them coming together to showcase and sell
their artistic creations.
Food Carnival:
I was delighted to be involved with the inaugural Food
Carnival, well done to Karen Coakley, Johnny
O’Sullivan and all the Committee. It has provided a
huge boost to the area.
15th August Fair:
I have requested the assistance of Kerry County
Council again this year to ensure the annual fair runs
as smoothly. The fair last year was well run and
conducted thanks to the assistance of the Council and
as always our Local Gardai.

As Chairperson of Kerry County Development Board I
am delighted the web site has finally been launched, it
was worked on by a sub committee of the Board,
KEDU (Kerry Economic Development Unit) and
Chaired by County Manager Tom Curran. It outlines
all of what Kerry has to offer and it’s a one stop shop
for people wishing to visit or set up business in the
County. It’s well worth having a look at.
Kilgarvan Village Roads upgrade:
I am glad to have been successful in getting Kilgarvan
village resurfaced with blacktop surfacing; I made
numerous representations and tabled many motions. I
have pursued this issue vigorously since the electoral
boundaries changed in 2009 and I became another
local Councillor for Kilgarvan. Thanks also to my
colleagues in Fine Gael and Labour who assisted me.
I will continue to lobby for extra funding to finish of
the section between Bantry Cross and the Speed limit
near the Presbytery. Although the Kilgarvan Sewage
system will receive an upgrade which will alleviate
some of the problems, a full
scheme is needed and I will
continue to push for one.

Gurranes- Road:

got badly damaged during
the bad weather two years
ago. This busy section of
road is being resurfaced.
Lauragh – Saorview
TV Coverage
I contacted the regulator
regarding concerns expressed
to me about TV coverage.
When the switchover takes
place 2% of areas nationally
will experience difficulties
getting coverage which
includes Lauragh and to
address this, costs in the
region of €400 may have to
be incurred. The
Communications regulator
will have ensure the issue is
sorted out or grants will have
to be given in such
circumstances. I have also
requested Kerry County
Council to raise the issue
with the regulator and
Communications Minster Pat
Rabbitte.
Dunkerron Road upgrade:
This Dunkerron- Cladanurre Road is to be resurfaced
in the coming months from Tubrid Cross to Reen; the
grant allocated is €500,000.
Sneem – Lane at North Square upgrade:
This section of road is in shocking state. Many local
representatives have tried to get this section done
throughout the years to no avail. I am glad to ensure its
being done, through a roads grant I secured and my
Councillors allocation. This will be of huge benefit to
the residents, businesses and the local Tidy Towns
committee.
Sneem Garda Station:
There are no immediate plans to amalgamate any
Garda Stations; this is under the remit of the Garda
Commissioner. There were talks that Cahirciveen
would be amalgamated with Killarney which could
have repercussions for Sneem Garda Station. The
Plans for 2013 have not yet been drafted. I will
continue to campaign for the retention of Rural Garda
Stations.
Library opening hours:
Gladly our campaign to have the Library operating on
a full time basis paid off, a student from UL will be
covering maternity basis. The library is a wonderful
facility and is used now more that ever.
County Council Motions:
I will be discussing and elaborating on the following
motions before the next County Council meeting:
• The Gathering 2013 should have a huge positive
impact on Tourism and the Economy especially here in
Kerry. What steps will Kerry County Council take to
assist the Gathering in 2013?
Joint motion with Councillor Seamus Cosai Fitzgerald:
• That Kerry County Council do their utmost to assist
the Rural Alliance in their endeavours to empower
Rural Communities to achieve growth and
Sustainability.
Electoral Area boundary Changes:
After the next general election Kerry will be a single 5
seater. The people of the Kenmare Area will have
plenty of candidates to choose from and there will be a
good political mix. I am glad that my friend Labour
TD Arthur Spring should be one of our representatives.
We also await news of any changes to the local
electoral area boundaries.

Ireland, Kenmare on Thursday 19th July @ 8pm. Admission is
free with a retiring collection in aid of St Patrick’s Restoration
Fund. ‘A Summer Musical Soiree’ given by the Sandlapper
Singers from South Carolina, USA will also feature special local
guests the South Kerry Rosen Choir. The programme will be a
wonderful mix of popular and classical songs, spirituals and
gospel music, American Broadway and show tunes and Irish

GREAT DAYS RACING AT
TEMPLENOE REGATTA
A great days racing was had at the Templenoe regatta which was
held on Sunday 15th July. The day started off in near perfect
rowing conditions with their U12's crew taking 1st place, as the
races went on the water conditions went from flat calm to wild and
windy which however didn't deter the minor girls crew who rowed
home in first place winning the Margaret Noonan Memorial cup
(proudly sponsored by JP Painting). The rest of the days medals
came in Bronze with the Vet Ladies, U16 boys, Minor boys, Senior
Men and Seine boat all coming in 3rd place. Well done to all crews,
coxes, volunteers and sponsors.

This year’s drama
production from the
Blackwater Drama
Group, once again
produced by the
Blackwater Women’s
Group and directed by
Eileen O’Leary, was
another outstanding
success.
With six sell-out performances
held last month at the Old
Dancehall, the support and
enthusiasm from the greater
Kenmare area drew exceptional
audiences whose enjoyment of
the play was greatly appreciated
by the cast and crew involved.

held in torrential rain and wind,
conditions were at times
extremely challenging for the

However nothing could dampen
the spirits of everybody involved

Blackwater calendar and when
the darker evenings draw in there
will be meetings and planning to
hatch another production for
2013.

KENMARE RUGBY CONTINUES
FOR THE SUMMER
Tuesday night is TAG night in Kenmare. All welcome to come and join in.
This is a non contact from of rugby for both the lads and girls and a wide
range of ages (over 16) can all play together at all different skill levels all
for a bit of fun. So drop down to the School sports field at 8.00pm on
Tuesdays.

Question
What is the Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance?
Answer
The Back to School Clothing and Footwear Allowance (BTSCFA) helps
you to meet the cost of uniforms and footwear for children going to
school or college. In 2012 the age limits changed, and BTSCFA is now
paid to children aged from 4 to 22. They must be aged between 4 and 22
on or before 30 September of the year that you apply for the payment.
Children aged between 18 and 22 must be in full-time education in a
recognised school or college.
The rates have also changed in 2012. The allowance paid for each
eligible child aged between 4 and 11 on or before 30 September 2012 is
€150. The allowance paid for children aged 12-22 on or before 30
September 2012 is €250.
You (the parent or guardian) must be getting certain social welfare
payments or payments for training, employment schemes or adult
education for at least 6 weeks between 1 June and 30 September. The
scheme operates from June to September each year.
The start date for the 2012 scheme is 1 June 2012.
In 2012 the Department of Social Protection will pay BTSCFA
automatically to a large number of qualified people. This means that
many families do not have to apply for the payment. However, if you do
not receive an automatic payment you must apply for the Allowance.
Application forms will be available in all social welfare offices and on
the Department’s website www.welfare.ie.
The Department will examine all applications received and will post
updates on www. welfare.ie on the progress being made in processing
them. You will get a letter informing you of the decision on your
application and, if it is approved, when and where you can collect your
payment.

Local charity to benefit
from airport run
Bryan Russell of APFS Harriers 5k has organised a fun run in aid of
Bee for Battens and Barretstown at Dublin Airport on August 26th at
12noon and is inviting Kenmare people to come and join him.
All the proceeds will be split equally between locla charity Bee for
Battens and Barretstown and the route will be a flat 5km road
surface. Free parking will be available at the Boot Inn at the back of
Dublin Airport (R108) and registration will be available at the Boot
Inn from 10am - 11.30am for €15.00 or online at Run Ireland for
€10.00. The deadline for online entries is August 24th at 5pm and
online entries must collect their number on the day at the Boot Inn.
A permit from Athletics Association of Ireland has been granted and
race course has been officially measured.
First Aid cover and water will be provided on the day. Please
allow enough time to register on the day as registration is 10 minute
walk from start/finish line.
The emphasis on the day is to have fun for both the novice and the
more experienced runner. Please come out and support two fantastic

KENMARE FOOD FESTIVAL PARADE
Chiari and Mary from the Carnival Parade and the
Kenmare Food Festival Committee would like to say
a big thank you to all the young artists from the
local schools for drawing such beautiful
scrumptiously delicious pictures for the Food
Festival Parade.
The pictures have been on display in various locations all over
town. They would also like to thank the Men's Shed group.
For helping out on the float a very special thanks to Caelan
Verdekal, Miguel Gomez, Keith Men’s Shed, Margaret and Fiadh
Lucy, Margaret Moor, Kim Crowley, the Mcclintock clan, James and

Over the past weeks we have been receiving a good supply of
photos from near and far. A small collection of old golfing
photographs have been received from Bobby Hanley from the USA
including the picture here showing Bobbys’ last put before
emigrating to the US in 1955. The young feller holding the flag is
his young brother Pete. Pictures like this have their own silent
stories and hopefully the Kenmare Chronicle will be able to bring
these stories to life.
We have received pictures of a wide range of events as well as
sporting occasions in Football, Hurling, Camogie and Rowing to
score cards and reports from the Kenmare cricket team known as
the Bosthoons from the early 1900’s. So, we are still collecting, if
you find anything that you think would be of interest to us please
drop them into Willowfield Garden Centre or to John F in the post
office. Pictures can be scanned and returned promptly. On our
Kenmare chronicle facebook page we are also running a daily
feature, ‘ on this day in Kenmare....’ reflecting daily reported events

wait for the regulators report
with regard to Shannon LNG?
It is of vital importance that this
project is allowed to go ahead
and all obstacles holding it up
should be removed as a matter
of urgency.
How can the Minister stand
over, as reported, the fact that
the new property tax is to be
deducted directly from the
wages of PAYE employees in
order to ensure compliance?
Surely this is not fair and they
should be treated the same as
self employed workers who will
be required to declare their
liability for the tax in their
annual assessment.
With regard to the proposed
changes with the registration of
rights of way, could the

Minister reconsider this
proposal as there are already
many cases of people refusing
to sign the consent with regard
to these rights of way and it is
proving to be a legalistic
nightmare for many people who
perhaps are not on good terms
with the people whose lands
they have to use to enter and
exit their property.
Could the Minister ensure that
the back to school allowance
will be paid promptly to
applicants and we will not have
a scenario like last year where
people were left waiting for
long periods of time to receive
payment.
Many people are worried
because of media reports that
they may possibly lose their
free travel, free electricity
allowances and other benefits.
These people are elderly/disabled and others - in
need of security of these
services which they have had
for many years. Can the
Minister give an assurance that
they will continue to receive
these benefits.

I am glad that representations
by myself and Councillor
Johnny Healy Rae were
successful in ensuring that the
Kerry Library Service have
filled the vacancy in the Library
in Kenmare. This will ensure
the opening hours of Kenmare
Library, from the week
beginning Tuesday 26 June, are
as follows - Tuesdays
Wednesdays Thursdays
10.00am to 5.00 pm. Fridays &
Saturdays 10.30 am & 1.30 to
2.30 5.00pm. I am still
pursuing the return of the late
opening hours on Thursday
which have not yet been
reinstated. Now, more than ever
before, people want to avail of
the services of our library. The
service had actually been
curtailed in Kenmare and we
rightly stated at the time that the
people of Kenmare were
entitled to a library service
compatible to any other town in
the country. I want to
compliment past and present
staff for the excellent care and
kindness that they provide to
users of this great facility.
HEALY-RAE RAISES
ISSUE OF THE CRISIS
IN THE FARMING
SECTOR WITH THE
TAOISEACH AND
MINISTER FOR
AGRICULTURE IN
THE DAIL
I raised with the Taoiseach and
the Minister for Agriculture the
fact that in years gone by there
were compensation packages
put together for our farming
community during bad summers
when there was a failure to
harvest enough silage or hay for
the winter months. This is
definitely the case this year as
farmers are facing a crisis
situation. No one has enough
silage cut yet, fields are water
logged and in many cases
farmers are feeding the fields
that they had designated for
silage. Now more than ever the
farmers will need the assistance
of the Government in securing a
financial package to assist them.
I put forward a strong and
forceful case and I hope the
Government wake up to the
reality of the crisis that the
farming community is facing.

The following are issues that I
am dealing with in the
Kenmare/Kilgarvan area
I am glad that the black top in
Kilgarvan Village has been
finished. I want to thank the
area engineer and the
contractors for their great work.
I am also delighted that, by
working with area engineer and
management, we were able to
get this scheme brought
forward. I will keep working to
ensure funding to finish the
road from Shines Cross to the
speed limit on the Kenmare
side.
I am delighted that the Bog
Road will be over layed shortly
by a different contractor. I have
allocated 8000 euro from my
councillor’s allocation to
complete this work.
I am glad that KCC have agreed
to put in place a pedestrian
crossing between Saint John’s
National School and playground
on the hospital road to ensure
safety for the schools and
residents. Work is due to start in
August. I have also requested a
pedestrian crossing between
The Courthouse and Duggan’s
in Kenmare.
I have again raised the issue of
a safety barrier in Lauragh. It
will be included in a submission
to the NRA for funding. I will
keep pushing for this to be
done.
I also had a motion down in
relation to Kilgarvan
Graveyard. No land has been
purchased yet. I have asked that
KCC seek money to break rock
to give more space and try and
locate land close to the existing
graveyard .

Defibrillators for the Blackwater/Templenoe area.
Blackwater/Templenoe Defibrillator Group are delighted to
announce that 4 Defibrillators have been erected in the
Blackwater/Templenoe area, one at Blackwater Tavern, one at John
Sheehan’s Direen, one at Dromore Sportsfield and one at Spillane’s
Bar. There is a 5th Defibrillator situated at Templenoe GAA
Grounds; it was donated by the Park Hotel a few years ago in
memory of Johnny O’Sullivan Myles.
36 members of the community are now trained in CPR & use of
the Defibrillator. The Defibrillator boxes are locked and all those
trained can collect their keys at the Shop, Blackwater. Keys are
held at Blackwater Tavern, at Sheehan’s and at Spillane’s bar also.
The same key fits all four AED Cabinets. The Blackwater Women’s
Group/Defibrillator Group successfully applied to South Kerry
Development Partnership for funding towards the purchase of the
equipment, they hope to draw down the grant later in the year.
Youth Drama Workshop
There is a one week Youth Drama Workshop taking place in
Blackwater from 23rd to 27th of June. The aim of the course is to
give children basic acting skills, improve self esteem, gain
confidence and have fun. Drama Coach Eileen O’Leary is
facilitating the course.

Kanturk Gardaí, who are investigating Paudie O'Leary's death,
say they are fairly certain they are looking for a charcoal grey
Toyota Landcruiser. Inspector Ger Lacey says they believe the
front right of the vehicle was damaged, noticeably to the bumper
and lights. He says anyone who saw this jeep after it left the
Gneeveguila area on Sunday morning would have noticed damage

Kenmare Adult Education
for Autumn 2012
The Kenmare Adult Education Centre is
greatly expanding the range of courses it offers
for Autumn 2012. New courses include
“Employability Skills” (FETAC Level 3) aimed
at those people who may have lost their jobs in
recent years, those who have left school before
completing their Leaving Certificate, as well as
those who want to begin the process of
reskilling for entry into the workforce.
There are also two Major Awards in the Business and
Information Technology areas at FETAC Level 5 and Level
6. The Level 5 Major Award is aimed at those that want to
update their skills (particularly IT skills) to gain
employment, or those thinking about the self-employment
option. The Level 6, Advanced Certificate, is aimed at those
that have the Leaving Certificate, or equilivant, and want to
develop a high level business skill as well as those
considering going on to Higher Education. Also offered is a
Major Award in Healthcare Support (FETAC Level 5)
which is designed to help people gain employment in the
broad healthcare area including the HSE, Nursing Homes
and Home Care. There is also a range of single certified
subjects on offer as well as the usual classes in exercise, art,
IT and related areas. (Application Date is 17th September at

Rain, Rain, Rain ! Not much of a summer so far yet but let’s hope
that it will pick up for the end of August and go on into
September...we can only hope, and no matter what, we cant do
anything about it at all!
The plants are also suffering out in the garden. Flowers are suffering
from the constant barrage of rain which lead to mouldy conditions
and the low temperatures are resulting in poor growth. Even grass
growth in the lawns is very poor and nutrients are being constantly
leached out of the soil resulting in patchy pale growth. On the other
hand, trees are growing away and taking advantage of the
abundance of water to produce extra growth and foliage. Weeds,
slugs, bugs, moulds, funguses, rusts and everything we don’t
welcome in the garden are also enjoying the wet weather !
So, what are we to do ?
1. Feeding is even more necessary this year than in other years as
the constant rain is draining everything out of the summer containers
so whenever you can add feed to your water to get the plants
growing again. Make sure that the containers are not waterlogged. If
they are make some extra drainage holes in the container to let
them drain. Some hanging baskets may also be be in the same
condition. Tomato feed or Rose Feed will help kick start flowering. A
sprinkling of granular fertilizer on the soil surface may be advisable if
the compost is constantly getting naturally watered.
2. The lawn could do with an extra dose of Lawn Feed with moss
and weed killer as these wet conditions are ideal for moss growth
and the weeds aren’t affected by the poor weather so are beginning
to get on top of grass growth and need a check. This feed will take
3 & 4 bed rental properties within
walking distance of Kenmare Town.

By feeding now it will put the lawn in far better health heading into
the autumn.
3. In the vege garden additional manure of Poultry manure pellets
will help keep the plants moving along and try and keep on top of
the weeds and the slugs which are thriving in this weather. Moulds,
rusts, leafspots and blights will also be a problem this summer so
keep on top of the spraying.
4. If your summer containers have really been badly affected by the
weathwer there is plenty of time to replant them and have many
weeks of colour as they will last right into October and the first
frosts. Geraniums, trailing Petunia and New Guinea Impatiens will
add instant colour to window boxes, hanging baskets and other patio
containers. If you need something larger for a wow factor, the
Hydragea are now available and will fill a large pot on their own and
give an instant display. Large Hebe Adenda will be available soon
for the same use and then the Large Garden Mums in August.
5. Roses should be sprayed regularly with Rose Clear to prevent
the build up of pests and diseases that are unperturbed by the bad
weather. Dead –head whenever the flowers are beginning to go
over. This will prevent infection and promote new growth.
6. To brighten up shrub beds or flower borders there is a wide range
of perennials and herbaceous plants that one can use. The
sprawling Nepeta, cat mint is a reliable summer favourite, various
types of Daisies can add a white splash. Perennial Geraniums of
varying growth habits in purples , pinks and blues are available to
provide contrast to the flowering spikes of Crocosmia and Astilbe.
Phlox, Dahlia, Gladioli are also at their best in July and August.
Plenty to choose from...just call into the garden centre and see what
we have got !
Hopefully, when you have done all this the sun will come out and
you will be able to sit back in the garden and relax.

This years Little bo peep Olympic distance
triathlon (1500 metre swim, 40k bike ride
and 10k run), which takes place on the 11th
of August, has been selected as an Irish
qualifying event for the European
championship to be held in Alanya Turkey
next year. Kenmare tri club have been
running this event since 2006 and it has
gone from strength to strength attracting
many of Ireland's top triathletes each year.
The course itself is a real test. The swim
takes place in a sheltered bay adjacent to
the Star sailing Centre with water temp in
access of 18 degrees with guaranteed calm
waters, which lead to a fast time. The bike
leg must be one of the most scenic on the
circuit taking in views of the Beara and
Iveragh peninsula and includes a
challenging climb and some very fast
straights. The run takes in some undulating
ground on a quiet country back road and all
of this combined with it's location adjacent
to the picturesque town of Kenmare make
this a must for the triathletes bucket list.

junior award scheme of the RLSS Ireland.

Basketball Teams
Boys Basketball in Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine reached another milestone in its
history by qualifying all the boys teams for the All-Ireland playoff stages for the
first time ever. This means that the four teams reached the last 16 in the country
in their division and for the second year boys they took it to the next level by
making it to the last 4 in the country contesting the All-Ireland Semi Final.
First up the U19 Boys and the seven stalwarts of the Team (Colm O’Sullivan,
Brian Clifford, Cian Long, Denis O’Neill, Eoghan O’Sullivan, John Hayes and

Shane O’Sullivan the only other leaving Certificate on the team came back from
his sabbatical from Basketball in L.C.1 to captain the team for the league
duration. These eight were supported by Conor Harrington, Kieran O’Donoghue,
Johnie Breen, Finbar Quill and John Rice. Having no luck in the Cup competition
focus turned to the League where the boys qualified as Southwest Munster
Regional runners-up and for the first time Pobalscoil got to host the All-Ireland
Playoffs at home. A festival atmosphere ensued for Sunday 5th Feb school Gym
packed for very entertaining games but no luck for the boys. However some of
those thirteen leaving us do so with quite a number of accolades: First year AllIreland ‘B’ finalist, second year All–Ireland’B’quarter finalist, third year AllIreland ‘B’ Cup champions and All-Ireland ‘B’ league semi finalists. Played in the
U19 ‘A’ Kerry league and All-Ireland ‘A’ Cup and finally this year they made it to
the last 16 in the country in ‘B’ league. Will this record ever be surpassed? We
wish them the best in their future careers.
U16 Boys, a small but talented squad took to the All-Ireland ‘B’ Cup competition
in early September with no success but focus on the league brought them the
Southwest Munster title with some very impressive and sometimes exquisite
basketball. From here they headed to Monaghan to fight it out for a place in the
All-Ireland semi final. Here they got revenge on St. Pauls from Galway the team
that beat them at home in the cup but lost our in a place in the All-Ireland semi
final by a basket to the home team. Captaincy was shared here between David
Hallissey and Fionán O’Sullivan both boys a credit to the responsibility given. In
their corner were fellow third years, Killian Spillane, Alan Murphy Reeve, Conor
Murphy, Daniel O’Sullivan and Josh Crowley-Holland but also three second
years, Stephen O’Sullivan, Brian O’Sullivan and Pat Spillane.
Next up were the newcomers – the first years. A massive panel of dedicated
students and proof in the fact that however big the crowd is once people are
interested and willing to work together, great things can be achieved. Unbeaten in
Southwest Munster are some tight games off to Dublin it was with them for a shot
at qualifying for the All-Ireland Semi Final. The opening game in Dublin against
the Christian Brothers Cork showed that not only in football can Kerry give Cork
a beating in. A loss and another win was not enough to secure a place in the semi
final and so a long trip home. The team was lead by captain Tom O’Sullivan and
vice captain Myles Traynor backed up by Daniel Taylor, Michael O’Sullivan,
Séan O’Sullivan, Kevin Price, Liam Mahony, Rory O’ Connell, Chris O’Sullivan,
Finbar Lehane, Patie Murphy, Séan Casey, John Crowley, Eugene Sweeney, Niall
Harrington, Darragh O’Siorchú, Denis Cronin, James Jones, Diarmuid Lynch,

Second years – What does one say –Potential, Potential, Potential – they blew
past everything in the Southwest Munster region and at home again Pobalscoil
Inbhear Scéine were granted the opportunity to host the All-Ireland Playoffs on
April 29th. Here spectators were treated to a great display of basketball evident
from standing ovations to last second drama with people unable to watch,

shouting and roaring as Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine second years boys won games
by five points, one point and fourteen points to seal victory and their entry into
All-Ireland Semi final territory. The trip to the U.L. arena and nothing else but
what Hollywood movies are made of, as Pobalscoil Inbhear Scéine were denied a
place in the final by a three pointer on the buzzer. They returned home as AllIreland Bronze medal winners. This team was gallantly lead by captain Cathal
Granville. His team mates were Moosa Mathibela, Darren Maye, Mark Hickey,
Seán O’Shea, Brian O’Sullivan, Ciarán Crowley, Dylan Spillane, Flor
O’Sullivan, Pat Spillane, Ciarán Lucey, Stephen O’Sullivan, Kieran O’Sullivan
and three first years, Tom O’Sullivan, Myles Traynor and Chris O’Sullivan.
Hosting one All-Ireland tournament of any kind is a daunting prospect but also a
great honour not to mind two. To travel to All-Ireland playoffs costs the school
and parents a lot of money so hosting was a practical solution as it saved money
but cost many man hours. It is thanks however to a cohort of mainly LC1
students that made it all possible who put in those hours of work in preparing the
school and running the U19 tournament in Feb. They were Sarah O’Leary, Maeve
Korpela, Damien Price, Megan, Megan , Jasmine, Gary, Stephen, Dean, Eliz,
Ciarán Crowley and Tom O’Sullivan + Lc 1
The second year tournament saw a return of some of the LC1 who ran the U19
competition in Feb and their dedication to the school by washing, mopping,
cleaning up, making sandwiches, running the shop, running the table, scoresheets,
taking photographs and general floor management was outstanding. They are a
credit to the school and their parents. A thanks to teachers and parents that offered
to help and also to Ms. Slattery who helped out both days despite have to attend
to her own playoffs the day before in Wexford in Feb and two days before in
Blarney in April.

Summer is progressing and it has been a good
one on both hurling and football fronts. In
football we await the Junior final in August
but things are still going nicely in Division 2
of the county league. A recent home win over
Annascaul put us joint second in the league
and very much in the mix for the battle for
promotion to division 1. The game against
Annascaul was a hard fought affair in which
we prevailed by 2-11 to 2-9 and featured two
very eye-catching goals – Paul O’Connor’s
quick free lashed in off the post and Kevin
O’Sullivan’s lob into the net.
Our Junior footballers had a narrow loss in
their semi final against Dromid Pearses, 1 -10
to 0 – 8 the final score but Kenmare were
unlucky that they didn’t bag at least one goal,
the crossbar denying us on one occasion, but
such is football. Well done on a valiant effort
to the players and management.
In hurling things going well also – the
Junior team went up to Duagh and earned a
point with a deserved draw on a scoreline of
5-4 to 3-10. In the Championship they were
drawn in the quarters against Crokes with who
we had a tight game in the league the week
previous. On this occasion we were way too
strong for them and ran out comfortable
winners, 3-11 to 1-1. That put us into the
Intermediate semi final in which we were
drawn against our rivals (and team-mates in
division 1 hurling!) Kilgarvan (see report
below).
So lots to look forward to over the summer
(have to think of a new name for it) and lots
of football and hurling on the horizon.

Kilgarvan 1-7
Kenmare won by six in the end but it was by
no means easy – it was really only in the last
five or six minutes that Kenmare really pulled
away from Kilgarvan boosted by the steady
radar of Sean O’Regan, pushing Kenmare out
of sight and into the Intermediate final.
The first half was well balanced, even
though Kenmare led by six at the break it was
very even and had Glyn Egan’s shot on 20
minutes found the net it would have been
much tighter. Seamus MacGearailt saved and
within 30 seconds Liam O’Shea was pointing
down the far end – a four point swing at a
time when Kenmare were only leading by 0-4
to 0-2.
Three minutes later it was O’Shea again who
was causing problems when he found a hole
in midfield and sprinted through and produced
another white flag. Glyn Egan, who was a
constant threat, added a point from a free for
Kilgarvan but Cian Crowley was hard to
watch and Kenmare’s midfield was putting
Kilgarvan on the back-foot. The half was to
end with a goal. A Sean O’Regan free floated
into the square on 30 minutes and Kieran

Fitzgibbon judged it perfectly to flick to the
net. Half time, Kenmare 1-6 to Kilgarvan 0-3.
The first fifteen minutes of the second half
decided this match – Kenmare brought under
more pressure from Kilgarvan and DJ
Brennan and Tommy O’Sullivan working
especially hard to clear the lines. With ten
minutes gone in the second period it was still
nip and tuck, an Egan free had put five points
between the teams and Kilgarvan were
playing to a much higher tempo, but it was a
Sean O’Regan point that seemed to give
Kenmare the impetus to go on and win the
match. Bursting though the centre he looked
on at least two occasions to have lost the
sliotar but managed to ‘juggle’ it over the bar!
Within a minute sub Micheal
O’Suilleabhain almost goaled after a lovely
little flick back to himself. Sean Godfrey in
the Kilgarvan goal saved well but Kenmare
had found another gear. Jimmy Wharton was
providing plenty of ball to his fellow halfforwards and often frees resulted.
Sean O’Regan put over three frees in-a-row
from the 54th to the 59th minute and the game
was wrapped up when Michael
O’Suilleabhain popped over a fine point to
leave Kenmare with a nine point lead as the
clock ticked into injury time. Glyn Egan
grabbed a goal on the second attempt to make
sure the margin was only six at the end but
Kenmare advance to the final.

The majority of Inter’s squads are enjoying the close season this
month, so news of games it pretty limited. The Over 35 squad have
played a number of games in their summer league, and look like
they could make it into a semi-final depending on results this
weekend. The new season is down to star (Seniors) in the third
week of August, while the schoolboys season will start as soon as
schools get back. We will be aiming to start the academy much
earlier this year, and run it in two sections, taking a break for the
worst of the winter weather in December/January.
Summer Soccer School
Time is running out to enter the FAI Summer Soccer School in
Kenmare. It starts on Monday August 13th, and runs for the week.
This is a great week, and is both enjoyable and a great way for
players from the age of 6 to 16 to improve their skills. The best way
to sign up is on line, at the following location:

better – don’t leave it until the last minute, as notice is needed to
make sure the right kit with player names etc gets delivered on
time.
Coaching
Inter would like to appeal for coaches for all areas. We have a great
group of underage and senior coaches, but we need more. No
serious applicant for any position from under 6 to over 35 will be
refused, there is plenty of work to go around. The club will provide
training and assistance for anyone that can help out. So if you are a
player who thinks they could do better with the senior team, now is
the time to step forward. Just give your name to any club member
or committee member and we’ll make contact with you.
Inter Kenmare 5s
For the last 20 years, Inter Kenmare has been running a seven a
side competition every summer. Times are changing, teams are
finding it harder to fill squads, and the club feel that its time to
change before the competition becomes stale. So this year, the
competition is “The Inter Kenmare 5s”. There have been big
changes:
Entry costs reduced to €80 per team
A new junior competition, for 13 to 17 year olds
Squads reduced from 10 to 8
Smaller pitches, reduced size goals
More group games for every team
