Colonization and Settlement from 1607 to 1763
Chapter 3 English Colonies Are Established 1607 to 1733
Think of yourself as a European living in the 1600s. You are unhappy with the way your government rules. You are unhappy
about being unable to worship as you choose. You have heard about a new land across a wide sea. Will you be among those
who choose to leave home for the new land? Will be brave enough to sail for 3 or 4 months to get to an unknown place? How
will you want your government and religion to be different in a new country? Will you be able to brave many hardships to have
a better life? In this unit we will learn why the first European settlers came here and how they made a life. We will learn which
countries established settlements and claimed land. We will learn about their very first struggles for freedom.
Early exploration paved the way for colonization in the New World. Many people in England other parts of Europe were looking

The Earliest Bowling
Our modern bowling began in Europe during the Middle Ages. German players rolled or threw a ball at 9 wooden clubs that
stood upright. The clubs were weapons commonly carried for protection. The game was called "ninepins." The first recorded
game of ninepins in America was in 1732. Dutch settlers played on a green in New Amsterdam, later named New York. This
was called the "bowling green," as that area of New York is still known. When bowling attracted gamblers in America, some
states made "bowling at ninepins" illegal. In the 1840s, resourceful bowlers added a 10th pin to evade the ruling. Since then,
bowling has become one of America's most popular sports.
