El mes de la herencia hispana
Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15 to
October 15, is set aside to recognize and celebrate the
contributions Hispanics and Latino Americans have made
to the United States. We celebrate their successes, hard
work and service that has help ed shape our country.
On September 20th, CAB, Diversity and Inclu sion, and the Blackburn Spanish Department hosted
Hispanic Heritage Night to celebrate the importance of
this month. The event featured a game of Jeopardy filled
with questions and facts about the Hispanic culture,
people and history. Jordan Gerue was among the winners
of Jeopardy. “It was nice to see so many people out to
support the event. Attendance at events can be quite
sparse at BC so it was good to see so many people out
to learn about the Hispanic World, and have some fun in
the process.”
There were also refreshments, dancin g and a
presentation about the stereotypes that Hispanics are
faced with. Amelia Kirby commented that, “The Hispanic
Heritage celebration was a hit!” Multip le gift cards to Sol
de Mexico and the Blackburn Bookstore were given away
as door prizes. Jarrod Gray, head of Diversity and Inclusion, said the event “was a nice opportunity to celebrate
the diversity of Hispanics at Blackburn College, in the
USA, and all over the world.”
We would like to extend our thanks to all
who came out and celebrated wit h us! We hope you
enjoyed the event! A special thanks to CAB (student
activities) for sponsoring the door prizes, the
Blackburn Dance Club for demonstrating some
Cha-Cha, Sodexo, and Jarrod Gray (head of Diversity & Inclusion) for organizing and collaborating
with the Spanish Department to make this event
possible!
El mes de la herencia hispana, el 15 de septiembre a 15
de octubre, se dedica a reconocer y celebrar las contribuciones que
hispanos y latinoamericanos han hecho a los estados unidos. Celebramos sus éxitos, trabajo duro y servicios que ha ayudado formar
nuestra país.
En el 20 de septiembre, CAB, la oficina de Diversidad e
Inclu sión y el Departamento de Español de Blackburn tuvieron la
noche de herencia hispana para celebrar la importancia de este mes.
El evento ofreció un ju ego de Jeopardy con preguntas y hechos
sobre la cult ura hispana, la gente y la historia. Jordan Gerue fue uno
de los ganadores de Jeopardy. “Fue bueno ver muchas personas
apoyando el evento y asistencia a los eventos
Hubo también refrescos, bailes, y una presentación sobre
los estereotipos que los hispanos enfrentan. Amelia Kirby comentó
que, “¡La celebración de la herencia hispana fue un éxito!” Muchas
tarjetas de regales a Sol de México y la librería de Blackburn se les
dio como premios de puerta. Jarrod Gray, el jefe de la oficin a
de Diversidad e Inclusión, dijo el evento, “fue una buena oportunidad para celebrar la diversidad de los hispanos en Blackburn College, en los EE.UU., y en todo el mundo.”
¡Nos gustaría expresar nuestra gratitud a todos los
que vinieron y celebraron con nosotros! ¡Esperamos que
hayan disfrutado el evento! Un agradecimiento especial a
CAB (actividades de los estudiantes) por patrocinar
los primos de puerta, el club de baile de Blackburn por
demostrar el Cha-Cha, Sodexo, y Jarrod Gray (el jefe

The Blackburn Spanish Club met
twice this month, September 9th and September 23rd. In the first meeting officers
were elected, semester events were discussed, and Jamaica prepared by Dr. Kartchner was enjoyed. Michelle Lee will serve as
Spanish Club president this semester, along
with Marissa Watson as vice-president. This
semester Spanish Club hopes to be more
active and wants to inform students and the
community about the Spanish-speaking cultures.
On Monday, September 23, Spanish Club Vice President Marissa Watson
presented, “A Night in Spain.” She talked
about her experience living abroad and had a
slideshow of photographs for club members
to browse through. It was also a chance for
students to ask questions about the study
abroad experience. What was the food like?
The fashion? What was the biggest culture
shock? Members looked through syllabuses
from El Instituto Franklin, maps, museum
tickets, and postcards. Paella, a traditional
rice dish made with saffron, was offered for
members to try. ¡Que deliciosa! Club member Brittany Baker said, “I’m so glad I went.”
The next Spanish Club meeting
will be on Monday, October 7th, at 8:00 in
the Commuter Lounge. Club President,
Michelle Lee, will share her experiences from
Ecuador and Peru.....and of course, there will
be food! We hope to see you there!
Paella—a traditional rice dish
El club de español de Blackburn se ha
reunido dos veces este mes, el 9 de septiembre y el
23 de septiembre. En la primera reunión se discutieron y eligieron para el semestre y bebimos
Jamaica preparado por la Dra. Kartchner. Michelle
Lee servirá como la presidenta del clu b de español
este semestre, con Marrissa Watson como la vicepresidenta. Este semester el club de español espera
ser mas activo y quiere informar a los estudiantes y
la comunidad sobre las culturas de la lengua
española.
En lu nes, 23 de septiembre de la vicepresidenta de Club de Español, Marissa Watson, presentó, “Una noche en España.” Ella habló de su
experiencia de vid a en el extranjero y tuvo una
presentación de fotografías para los miembros del
club para navegar por. También fue una oportunidad para que los estudiantes hagan preguntas sobre
la experiencia en el extranjero. ¿Cuál era la comida?
¿La moda? ¿Cuál fue el mayor shock cultural? Los
miembros miraron por planes de estudio de El
Instituto Franklin, mapas, entradas a museos, y
postales. Paella, un plato tradicional de arroz hecho
con azafrán, se ofreció para que los miembros
probaran. ¡Que delicioso! Miembro del clu b Brittany Baker dijo, “Estoy muy contenta de haber ido!”
October 12th
El doce de octubre
Starting Monday, October 7, Sigma Delta Pi will
have a display for el 12 de octubre on Hudson second
floor. October 12 goes by various names: Columbus
Day, Hispanic Day, etc. Each celebration commemorates
the country’s heritage and connection to other Spanish
speaking countries.
The mission of the Honor Society is to provide students and the community with learning opportunities, and we are offering a reward. Everyone is encouraged to look at the board in Hudson, come to the
Spanish office, and tell us one fact that you learned. We
will reward you with a delicious “alfajor” (cookies we had
at the Hispanic celebration).
Comienzando el lunes, 7 de octubre, Sigma Delta Pi va a mostrar información
sobre el 12 de octubre en el Segundo piso de
Hudson. El 12 de octubre se conoce por
varios nombres: El Día de Colón, el día de la
Hispanidad, etc. Cada celebración conmemora
la herencia de un país y su conexión a otros
países hispanohablantes.
La mission de la Sociedad de Honor
es proveerles a los estudiantes y a la comunidad oportunidades de aprender y estamos
ofreciendo un premio. Los animamos a todos
a mirar en el boletín de Hudson y a venir al
Departamento de español a decirnos una cosa
que aprendieron y les daremos un alfajor.

Las Aventuras de Barney!

Somehow, Barney got wind of the fact that Jack was planning a trip to Sinaloa, Mexico. He had always wanted to travel south,
but it had been one of those dreams that just “sits on the back
burner”. “Mmh…,” Barney thought. “If I play my cards right, I might
be able to get a free trip to Mexico.” So he began to watch Spanish
television; he would stop Jordan and Amelia on their way to class
and try to practice his Spanish, he visited Taylor in the bookstore
and loved to speak Spanish with Rachel after dinner. The students
noticed his growing interest in the Spanish language, but never suspected his true intentions, least of all Jack!
On the appointed day, Barney managed to slip into Jack’s
carry-on luggage. At the airport, he quickly jumped out. He had a
terrible time making his way to the gate, but the trick was to never
lose sight of Jack and to never have to go through the security scanners. He hurried and scurried until he was back safe into Jack’s carry
-on. He was about to begin a fascinating adventure and he was excited! They arrived in Los Mochis that evening. They were tired and
hungry. He heard the excitement of Jack’s welcoming family. That
kept him awake for a little while, but he went to sleep soon after
their arrival. It had been a long day.
Barney wanted to be Jack’s faithful companion. Because of
that, if Jack wanted to try all kinds of chilies, Barney tried the chilies.
If Jack wanted to go to mass, Barney went to mass. If Jack decided
to go to the circus, well… of course he wanted to go to the circus.
Who would not want to go to the circus? However, at night, when
Jack went to sleep, Barney would sneak out because he was interested in finding The Association of Beavers—Sinaloa Chapter. He
had heard about them when he was watching Spanish television at home. Asking questions one can find anything, and so Barney’s
efforts were met with success. He found
out that members of the association got
together every night at a restaurant called
Los Tazones. There they talked, had some
drinks, but most of all, they danced to
“música norteña.”
Barney went to Los Tazones the
next night. Everyone was dancing and having a great time. He watched for a while
until he felt he had figured out the beat.
How he wished he had taken some lessons
from Sawyer back at Blackburn!! Now he
needed to ask a “señorita” to dance with
him. As if by magic, a beautiful “castorcita”
entered the room and his heart skipped a
beat. His legs felt like melting butter on a
hot summer day. Who was she? What was
her name? Would she dance with him? “Steady,” he told himself, and
walked towards her. Perhaps now his Spanish would pay off….

De alguna manera Barney
se enteró del hecho que Jack estaba planeando un viaje a Sinaloa,
México. Siempre había querido
viajar hacia el sur, pero había sido
uno de esos sueños que no se relaizan. Mmh…, pensó Barney. “Si
juego bien mis cartas, puedo hacer
un viaje gratis a México. Entonces
comenzó a mirar la televisión en
español; paraba a Jordan y a Amelia
camino a sus clases y trataba de
practicar su español, visitaba a Taylor en la librería y le encantaba
conversar en español con Rachel
después de la cena. Los estudiantes
notaron su creciente interés en el español, pero nadie
sospechaba sus verdaderas intenciones, ¡menos aún Jack!
El día del viaje, Barney logró meterse en el
bolso de mano de Jack. En el aeropuerto, él saltó del
bolso rápidamente. Le costó encontrar su camino a la
puerta de embarque, pero el truco era no perder de
vista a Jack y nunca pasar por un escáner. Se apuró y
corrió hasta que llegó sano y salvo al bolso de mano de
Jack. Estaba a punto de comenzar una aventura fascinante
y él estaba muy contento! Llegaron a Los Mochis ya de
noche. Estaban cansados y tenían hambre. Escuchó todo
el entusiasmo de la familia de Jack dándole la bienvenida.
Eso lo mantuvo despierto por un rato más, pero se durmió poco después de llegar. Había sido un día largo.
Barney quería ser el compañero fiel de Jack.
Por eso, si Jack quería probar todos los chiles, Barney
también los probaba. Si Jack quería ir a misa, Barney fue a
misa. Si Jack quería ir al circo, ¿quién no va a querer ir al
circo? Sin embargo en la noche cuando Jack se dormía,
Barney se escapaba porque estaba interesado en
encontrar a la Asociación de castores – Capítulo
de Sinaloa. Había escuchado de ellos cuando miraba la televisión en español en casa. Preguntando
uno puede encontrar cualquier cosa, entonces los
esfuerzos de Barney tuvieron éxito. Él se enteró
que la asociación se reunía cada noche en el
restaurante Los Tazones. Allí conversaban, bebían
algo y sobretodo bailaban al ritmo de la música
norteña.
Barney fue a Los Tazones la próxima
noche. Todos bailaban y se divertían.Él miró un
rato hasta que entendió el ritmo. Ojalá hubiera
tomado lecciones de baile de Sawyer cuando estaba en Blackburn!! Ahora necesitaba pedirle a una
señorita que bailara con él. Como por magia, una
hermosa castorcita entró al salón y su corazón se
saltó un latido. Sus piernas se derritieron como
mantequilla en un caluroso verano. ¿Quién era ella?
¿Cuál era su nombre? ¿Cuál era su nombre?
¿Bailaría ella con él? “Tranquilo” se dijo a si mismo,
y caminó hacia ella. Quizás ahora su español le
vendría de perlas. Continuará…
