OUR PHILOSOPHY OF CHRISTIAN EDUCATION We believe that our Lord Jesus Christ commanded His church to teach when He said, “Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you.” (Matt.28:1920a) We believe that the need to teach is immediate and urgent for the times in which we live. The Holy Scriptures themselves admonish us, through St. Paul, to take every opportunity to teach the Word, “making the most of the time, because the days are evil.” (Eph. 5:16) WEEKLY FAMILY TIME Because our weekly CEP classes on Sunday and Wednesday can never successfully take the place of Christian Education in the home, we must have the weekly participation of the family in this important process. It is through weekly worship, commanded by our Lord, that the Holy Spirit continues to nurture the faith of Christ’s people of all ages. Through weekly worship and Bible study, Christian parents set a powerful example. We also encourage parent(s) to assist the child in “filling out” the sermon summary forms. Shared participation in worship including the sermon and other liturgical activities can be a very enriching event for the whole family. THE GOALS OF OUR CEP MINISTRY The goals of this Christian education program are that through the work of the Holy Spirit, your child may: Know God and His forgiving love in Jesus Have a personal trust in Jesus Grow in Christian maturity Express joy in the worship of God and in living service to others And that in love of God, your child may value all of God’s creative work in His world and church, may participate actively in God’s mission to the church and the world and live in Christian hope. The parent(s) of the child register the student through an enrollment form from the Board of Education. 2. At the end of the year, items are taken into consideration for promotion to the next grade include: Attitude Commitment Academic Standards The Board will annually review the student’s performance based upon written and verbal report of the CEP teaching staff. Also included in the review will be church, Sunday School and class attendance, number of sermon summaries, and participation in church service events. 3. Approximately three months before the end of the school year, students in the 8th grade level should apply to the Board of Elders for confirmation. This process will include two parts. First, the student completes a written application form, then, the student will be interviewed by members of the Board of Elders and Education. The confirmation rite is a special time in the life of individual Christian. It marks when each believer sincerely and publicly promises a life of faithfulness to Jesus Christ and His church. The lifecommitment includes faithfulness in regular worship, service to God and fellow man, the use of time, talents, and treasures for advancement of His Kingdom and grateful obedience to Jesus, who is their Savior and Lord. MATERIALS & FEES Our congregation’s budget covers most of the cost for the operation of an educational program. However, fees for consumable materials (workbooks, etc.) will be assessed. We feel that each child, in a home, should have their own Faith Alive Bible and Catechism. Book fee assessments are sent to each home. The cost of lost workbooks, Bibles, and Catechisms is the responsibility of the student’s family. CURRICULUM Because the 5th and 6th grades are combined, the curriculum changes every other year. One year the students will learn more involved Bible stories and the following year they will be taught more about our church liturgy. The in depth for this year's 5th and 6th curriculum is as follows 5th and 6th Grade Curriculum for 201617 School Year Fifty Old Testament and Fifty New Testament Stories of the New International Version Bible are excerpted and introduced to the students. “Words to remember” memory verses will be used to reinforce the meaning of the stories. Additionally, confirmation terms related to the Bible stories are reviewed. Our outcome for studying the Holy Scripture in this grade is to help our students become wise unto salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. 7th Grade Curriculum Exploring Luther’s Small Catechism will be used to acquaint the students with: Questions and answers in Luther’s Small Catechism Bible verses that support Scriptural Doctrines (Teachings) and Bible narratives that support these teachings. Throughout the year, along with in depth study of the Ten Commandments, Apostles’ Creed and the Lord’s Prayer, the students will also get a chance to put their faith into action by means of handson activities. Some activities will be assigned for homework. Others will be done as a group project outside of class. 8th Grade Curriculum Partners in LearningThis familyoriented confirmation program enables parents and children to: Learn (and review) the basic teachings of the Christian faith as presented in Luther’s Small Catechism Share their faith in Jesus Christ with one another. Develop a Christcentered relationship with one another. Assess their values system based On God’s Word. Model Christian devotion. Learn about congregational life. Young people of every generation naturally look to their elders for guidance. As a caring Christian parent you best equipped to partner with your child in this learning process. Be assured the Holy Spirit will bless your efforts in Partners in Learning. MEMORY SELECTION Periodically during the year, there will be memory work assigned. Parents are asked to assist their children in learning memory selections. COOPERATION & COMMUNICATION Good communication between teachers and the home is important to ensure goals of our program are accomplished. Parents are encouraged to contact teachers whenever problems arise. Our teaching staff will also keep parents informed about their children’s program. ATTENDANCE For students to achieve and learn, students must attend each session and be present at the start of the class. This includes an expectation that both Sunday mornings and Wednesday afternoon sessions are attended Assignments missed during absences must be completed. It is the student’s responsibility to contact the teacher or a fellow student to get the assignment when absent. Frequent absenteeism and missed assignments will be perceived as indifference to our Christian education program. If a student does not make up missed assignments by the final day of CEP classes, the student will jeopardize advancing to the next grade. A note or call from a parent is acceptable for an excused absent. Faithfulness to Jesus Christ and a loving attitude to God are expressed in regular worship. During your child’s CEP participation, the instructor will assign written observations from the worship services. OPPORTUNITIES FOR CHRISTIAN SERVICE & FELLOWSHIP Acolyting (required) The annual brat fry (required) Church Christmas Program (required) Youth group Vacation Bible School And other events as scheduled We encourage students to participate in these churchrelated activities. SERMON SUMMARIES The Board of Christian Education supports the use of sermon summaries to help students better understand the weekly sermon given by the Pastor. PROGRESS REPORTS As a way of keeping the parent(s) informed about the progress of each student, a Progress Report will be mailed to the home two times a year, and a Parent/Teacher Conference will be held once per year. It will reflect the academic standards, attendance for CEP classes, Sunday School and Worship, and a measure of the student’s attitude and behavior. We ask that each parent review the Progress Report, sign it, and return it with your child the following Wednesday. The schedule for the Progress Report and Parent/Teacher Conferences are listed in the DATES TO REMEMBER section of this handbook. DISCIPLINE 1. Just as school systems have their policies on discipline, so does our Christian Education Program. The purpose of this policy is to promote a wholesome environment, conducive to Christian nurture. A student cannot experience the learning process if he/she comes without the required materials (workbook, Bible, Catechism, notebook, pencil, etc.) Without these materials, boredom or disruptive behavior often occurs. We feel it best to handle the situation as follows: a. A student will make a telephone call home to their parent requesting that the necessary materials be brought to the student. b. The teacher will talk to the parent about the situation 2. Students are expected to show respect for the facilities, class materials, the teachers and other students. If student’s behavior is disruptive or disrespectful, the following steps will be taken: a. Student will be given a verbal warning. b. Phone call will be made informing the parents of the reason for their child’s removal from the class. The parent(s) will be required to meet with the teacher. c. The third disruption will result in the student being required to attend the next class with his/her parent(s). d. If the behavior problem persists, the student and his/her parents are required to meet with the Board of Education to determine requirements for readmittance to CEP. Teaching Staff Through our educational program, we intend to provide children with quality Christian Education. Therefore, we acquire dedicated and qualified Christian teachers and staff.
