Nelson Rural School Award Criteria
Athlete of The Year





The athlete must be in good standing both academically and behaviourally.
The athlete must be an impact player on a varsity team in each sport
he/she is involved with at the school.
The athlete must have the respect of his/her teammates as well as the
coaches.
The athlete must be a team leader.
Recipients will be voted upon based on their impact and role on each team
they were involved with.
Anna McCarthy Award
 Must be a grade 8 student.
 Must have been a student at Nelson for at least 2 years at the
middle school level.
 Must have high academic standing in all subject areas.
 Must be an active member in their school and community.
 Must be a positive role model for their school, upholding all rules
and regulations and shows respect for self and others at all times.
 Must apply in writing listing reasons why they deserve to be
recognized for the award also known as the “student of the year”
award.
 Applications will read by all teaching staff K-8 and voted upon to
determine a winner.
Joy Sullivan Award
 Recipient must display or demonstrate either perseverance in life
or display a deep concern for the well being of others.
 Students are nominated and voted upon by all staff K-8.
Principals Award
 Awarded to a grade 8 student(s) who has gained the respect of
fellow students and teachers through their pleasant and positive
demeanour.
 Through their actions they have made their school a better place
for all staff and students.
Thomas Woods Memorial Award
Awarded to a primary student that inspires us with their
imagination, creativity and enthusiasm for life. The recipient is
nominated and voted upon by the primary team.
Michaela MacDonald Memorial Award
Awarded to an elementary student that displays a passion and a
love for reading. The applicant is nominated and voted upon by
the elementary team.
Middle School Most Improved Student
Awarded to a middle school student that displayed significant
improvement in either their attitude, academics or behaviour or a
combination of any of the above. Student is nominated and voted
upon by the Middle school team.
Queen’s University Book Prize
Awarded to a student who demonstrates a superior academic
performance, combined with extracurricular activities and has
demonstrated leadership and citizenship. Nomination and voting
for the award is by the middle school team.
Academic Achievement
These middle school students have achieved an “A” average
(84% 0r higher) in all core subjects (Lang. Arts, Math, Science
French, Soc. St,) and no lower than a “B” average (72%-83%) in
the secondary subjects (Phys. Ed., Tech., Health, Art, Music,
Civics).
Academic Achievement With Honours
These middle school students have a 90% average in all subjects
for the year.
Turn Around Achievement Award
Awarded to a student K-8 who has made a significant turn or
change in their life for the better. The recipient is nominated and
voted upon by all staff members.
