Self-Watering Planter and
Tomato Success Kit
Over the years, our Self-Watering Planter has helped thousands of gardeners — from
beginners to experts — grow big crops of healthier, tastier tomatoes. With just a few square
feet and a few minutes a week, you can grow juicy red tomatoes, flavorful herbs and
greens, broccoli, hot peppers, onions, colorful flowers — just about anything — in our
Self-Watering Planter.
Upper Cage:
Use the Small
Connectors (see Table 1) to
connect panels C and D. Snap
all upper cage Panels onto the
Connectors of the lower cage
(Figure 3). You may assemble the
entire cage as shown or, if you prefer, just the lower half. The upper
half of the cage can be added later as
your plants grow.

Step 5.
Place the Tomato Cage in the
planter. Secure the Cage to the
Planter using the Cage Clips (Figure 2). Be sure to keep the tomato
plant stems off the ground. Train
the stems to grow upward by using
soft string or cushioned plant ties to
prop them up on the
Tomato Cage.

Now you may plant your tomatoes.
Step 4. Tomato Cage Assembly
Use pliers to remove the
tips of the columns.
Remove the Reservoir Platform to
access drainage columns, then use
pliers to remove the tips of the columns.
Step 2. Planting Mix
In a separate container, moisten the planting mix
until it’s fluffy and moist but not soggy. Use a good
container mix, such as our Self-Watering Container
Mix, which consists primarily of sphagnum peat,
perlite and vermiculite.
Pour a few inches of pre-moistened soil into the
planter and press it firmly into the channels in the
Reservoir Platform. This step is very important. The
moistened mix will wick water from the reservoir to
ensure your plants do not dry out. Continue to fill the
planter with planting mix to within 1 to 2 inches of
the top edge. Note: Be careful not to obstruct the view
of the “MAX” line on the Water Level Indicator when
filling the planter with soil.
Step 3. Fertilizer
Tomato Success Kit
Assembly
Add a well-balanced fertilizer. We suggest using our
All-Purpose 5-5-5 Fertilizer or, if planting tomatoes, our
Organic Tomato Fertilizer. Thoroughly mix 1 cup of
fertilizer into 40 quarts of Container Mix. Side dress 4
to 6 weeks later with the same amount.
Step 4. Planting
Plant your flowers or vegetables. The Self-Watering Planter can hold one or two large plants (such as
full-size tomato plants) or a number of smaller plants.
Large determinate plants will need to be spaced far
apart and supported with a tomato cage or trellis.
Avoid over-crowding plants as this may reduce overall
plant growth.
Lower Cage: Assemble the Tomato Cage,
using the Large Connectors to attach the
corners of Panels A and B (Figure 1). For ease
of assembly, place the Large Connectors on a
hard level surface and push the top corners of
Panels A and B (upside down) into the Connectors. The Panels should “snap” into place.
Important: Make sure the horizontal bars of
the Panels are positioned on the outside of the
cage; otherwise, the Connectors will not snap
onto the Panels correctly.

Step 5. Watering
Water the planting mix to establish good root-tomix contact, then fill the reservoir with water through
the Fill Tube. NOTE: If you live in a hot, dry climate or
experience extended periods of dry weather, make sure
to check the water level on a regular basis (possibly
daily) to keep it filled. If the mix dries out, refill the
reservoir and water the mix thoroughly from above to
re-establish the wicking action.
