Understanding how to regroup numbers is necessary for continued math classes as well as for performing day-today activities. We add and subtract numbers when we balance our checking account or find the number of additional miles it will take to get to our destination. Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It — DIRECTIONS: Read through the Adding and Subtracting reference sheet with your parent or guardian. Review the steps needed to add and subtract two-digit numbers. Then, use these same strategies to complete the What’s the Number? activity page. Talk about It — After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show what you know. Now go have some fun with the activity! Start with the digits in the ones column, 8 + 7 = 15. Since the sum is more than 9, we write down the 5 in the ones column, and carry the ten to the tens column. Now we add the digits in the tens column, including the ten that was carried over: 1 + 4 + 1 = 6. Let’s subtract these numbers. Start with the digits in the ones column: 3 − 5. Since we can’t take 5 away from 3, we need to borrow a ten from the tens column. A ten is taken from the 6 tens, leaving 5 tens. Add this ten to the 3 in the ones column. The ones column now has 13 ones. We can subtract! 13 − 5 = 8 Now subtract the digits in the tens column to find the answer, 18.
