Dear Parent or Guardian:
Your child is currently learning to add and subtract two-digit
numbers. Here is your chance to help your child practice this
important skill.
In this PAL Packet you will find a short activity for you and your
child to do. Please do the activity and The Back Page this evening.
Then sign your name on The Back Page and have your child return it
tomorrow.
Remember, parents are a child’s first teacher. Thank you for your
time and energy in making learning fun and exciting for your child.
Sincerely,

SUMS AND DIFFERENCES
Parent Pointer —
Adding and subtracting two-digit numbers is a skill your child is
currently learning. Understanding how to regroup numbers is
necessary for continued math classes as well as for performing day-today activities. We add and subtract numbers when we balance our
checking account or find the number of additional miles it will take to
get to our destination.
Math in the Home, on the Go, and for the Fun of It —
DIRECTIONS: Read through the Adding and Subtracting reference
sheet with your parent or guardian. Review the steps needed to add
and subtract two-digit numbers. Then, use these same strategies to
complete the What’s the Number? activity page.
Talk about It —
After you have finished the activity, turn to The Back Page to show
what you know.
Now go have some fun with the activity! (

Adding and Subtracting
The first step in adding or
subtracting two-digit numbers
is to add or subtract the
numbers in the ones place.
tens ones
3 5
+2 3
8
The second step is to add
or subtract the numbers
in the tens place.
tens ones
3 5
+2 3
5 8
Let’s add these numbers.
Start with the digits in the
ones column, 8 + 7 = 15.
Since the sum is more than 9,
we write down the 5 in the ones column, and carry
the ten to the tens column.
Now we add the digits in the tens column, including
the ten that was carried over: 1 + 4 + 1 = 6.
Let’s subtract these numbers.
Start with the digits in the
ones column: 3 − 5.
Since we can’t take 5 away from 3,
we need to borrow a ten from the tens
column.
A ten is taken from the 6 tens, leaving 5 tens.
Add this ten to the 3 in the ones column.
The ones column now has 13 ones.
We can subtract! 13 − 5 = 8
Now subtract the digits in the tens column
to find the answer, 18.
