Brushing Away the Blues
By Betty Coon
It is Tuesday afternoon. The tile
floor seems to tug on your feet as
you trudge towards the Art Hall.
Ah! Ms. Morgan’s room is within
eyesight! Your steps become more
swift and light, for you are about to
party with your buddies. Art Group
meets in Rm. 2 every Tuesday from
3-4 p.m.
“In Art Group, we get to meet
new people,” 7th grader Stephany
Martines shared. She likes to see
how fellow members can make
diverse and beautiful creations
when they were all told the same

directions.
Creating art with your friends
boosts confidence. Eighth grader
Ella Driggs said, “At Art Group,
I am reminded that I can do this.”
Ella enjoys the encouragement from
her friends.
Jordyn Eaton in 9th grade stated,
“My favorite art project was the
shrinky dinks.” She loves the
precious panda shrinky dink she
made, and she finds it adorable how
itty bitty her creation is.
Art is similar to massage therapy
for some people. Jordyn declared,
“Being able to express yourself
through art releases stress.” Join Art
Group to let your creativity gently
rub away your troubles.
Some future Picassos have a
rough time accepting their creations.
Ella shared some insight into this
trouble: “I accept my effort.” Rather
than just looking at her result, she
observes how hard she worked as
well.

There was a major event for all
9th graders at Evergreen, one that you
saw preparations for with the suits,
ties, slacks, and skirts last month.
That was Reality Town, an annual
event for the 9th grade at Evergreen
that happened on Nov. 10.
Reality Town throws the 9th
graders into a simulated world with
a job, family, and responsibilities to
manage, or at least try to. Last month,
the formal clothing was meant for
a fictional job interview, testing the
students’ confidence and preparation.
Ms. Hill and Mrs. Barnhart,
the counselors at Evergreen, like
managing the event and seeing the
students’ reactions to the simulated
world. Reality Town has been at
Evergreen for more than a decade,
and its history goes much farther
back.
The students seem to like Reality
Town too. According to Ms. Hill, they
get tons of experience from it, and
they learn how to budget their money
in the real world. For the students, it’s
fun and exciting as well, and they get
to learn how the real world works.
The counselors’ advice to the 8th
and 7th grade: it’s never too soon to
start researching jobs, careers, and
colleges or universities. Ask how
much utilities cost; notice how much
groceries cost. Real life is expensive!
Remember, you only have a few
years until age eighteen!

The pep assembly and Halloween
stomp were fun and exciting ways
to end the first quarter. Our student
government and cheerleaders
did a great job of setting up both
activities.
Many students and teachers had
a great time at the pep assembly.
Seventh grader Monica McCombie
explained, “I had a fun time. It was
cool when the students cheered on
their peers.”
Principal Cutler also expressed
his appreciation for all the effort
Dance Company performed during the
Halloween Assembly.
put forth to make the assembly
a triumph. “I think student
government and cheer did a good job
of putting the assembly together.”
He also said, “I thought all the kids
had a fun time.”
Not only were the games and
activities an accomplishment, but the
performances from the cheerleaders
and Dance Company were quite a
victory as well. Brooklyn Kellogg, a
9th grader in Dance Company, said,
“We worked really hard to make it
the best we could. We also all did
our best while performing.”
Eighth grader Campbell Meyer
said, “My favorite part of the pep
assembly was Dance Company’s
‘Thriller’ dance.”
The stomp that took place after
the assembly was a success as well.
Meyer said, “It was way fun for me
and my friends. It was also fun to
see everyone else have a good time.”
Overall, Thursday’s activities were
quite an accomplishment.

It’s that time of year! No, not
Christmas, but Evergreen’s musical
auditions! This year’s musical is The
Music Man.
The Music Man follows a fasttalking traveling salesman, Harold
Hill, as he cons the people of River
City, Iowa, into buying instruments
and uniforms for a boys’ band that
will never be. He plans to skip town
with the cash, until he meets Marian,
the librarian, who transforms him
into a respectable citizen by the end
of the story.
Harold Hill will be played by Josh
Nichols. Marian, the music man’s
love interest, will be Ashlyn Hunt.
Marcellus Washburn will be played
by Matthew Jordan. Mrs. Paroo,
Marian’s mother, will be played by
Betty Coon, and her little brother
Winthrop will be Grant Bess.
Chloe Moss was cast as
Amaryllis. Oliver Jones will be
Mayor Shin, and his wife will be
played by Addi Zimmerman. Their
daughters Zaneeta and Gracie will
be played by Emma Barnett and
Julianne Wilson. Tommy Dijilas
will be Deven Peterson. The Picka-Little Ladies will include Maura
Monson, Annabelle Greene, Eliza

Music Mornings
By Jillian Newman
Early morning music at school!
Whoever heard of such a thing! Jazz
Band students come to Evergreen every
A-day morning at 6:45 to play their
instruments. These students have a
passion for music, and no time in the
morning is too early for them to play.
Currently in Jazz Band there are
27 students: 16 ninth graders, 4 eighth
graders, and 7 seventh graders. Looks
like a big group, but Mr. Zawalski
would like to have more.
Some students may wonder if they
can still join Jazz Band or if they have
to wait till the next year. Mr. Zawalski
said, “Depending on your level of
experience, you can still join.” There
is a variety of instruments that you can
play, such as flute, piccolo, saxophone,
clarinet, guitar, drums, trumpet,
trombone.
“We practice jazz literature and
applying different styles to our music,”
Mr. Z said. You can also have fun and
play awesome music.
“I love coming to Jazz Band and
playing fun and exciting music,” 9th
grader Abigail Jones said.
Mr. Zawalski has been leading
Jazz Band for four years and is very
passionate about it. If you are also
passionate about music, you should
consider joining Jazz Band.

Ultimate Frisbee is undoubtedly the
trendiest sport played at Evergreen Jr.
High. This year, Coach Dingley has
chosen to create an Ultimate Frisbee
club. Every Friday morning from 6:307:30, you are invited to play. Everyone
can come; they meet in the gym.
Students may already be grumbling
about how they’ve played soccer,
basketball, or volleyball for years
now, and there is no reason to pick up
another sport! However, Ultimate is an
enjoyable sport, regardless of your skill
level, because boys can huck the disc
just as well as girls.
For those who don’t know, Ultimate
Frisbee is a non-contact team sport.
Points are scored by passing the disc to
a teammate on the opposite side of the
field. Another rule is that players must
not take steps while holding the disc.
With Ultimate Frisbee, you will
not get bored because you’re having
a great time with your friends. The
purpose of this club is to have fun.
Ninth grader Jordyn Eaton plays the
clarinet in Jazz Band.
