GirlTrek presents MARCH 10-11, 2017 #WEAREHARRIET A CALL TO ACTION BLACK WOMEN ACROSS THE COUNTRY ARE ORGANIZING THE LARGEST TRIBUTE TO HARRIET TUBMAN EVER! JOIN US! #HARRIET TUBMAN CELEBRATION WEEKEND A N SOMETHING BIG A N N UA L C E L E B R AT I O N A N D T H E L A R G E S T T R I BU T E TO H A R R I E T T U B M A N I N T H E C O U N T RY GIRLTREK IS HONORING OUR HERO! If we don’t honor our heroes, who will? Every year we do it big for the greatest revolutionary freedom fighter this world has ever seen! Harriet Tubman Day is Friday, March 10, 2017. Help GirlTrek honor her legacy by joining in on the celebration. GirlTrek is a movement of Black women across the country –85,000 at last count who are committed to reclaiming our health and taking back our neighborhoods through walking. We are inspired by women like Harriet Tubman to make bold change one step at a time. Every year we honor Harriet Tubman. It started in 2013. Were you there? We came strong in every major city in America. We showed up - and showed out - internationally in cities like London and Cape Town. We even had some celebrities involved! We staged the largest tribute to Harriet Tubman in the country and were featured on CNN, Ebony Magazine, BET and other national media outlets. 2017 is going to be even bigger. This year, GirlTrek will celebrate Harriet Tubman through a weekend celebration that rallies women to host “Harriet House Parties” which are fun get-togethers with girlfriends that include opportunities to set personal health goals. The weekend also includes a neighborhood tribute walk, where we take to the streets of our community to honor our hero. As featured on: #HARRIET TUBMAN CELEBRATION WEEKEND WHY DO WE WALK? ! There’s a health crisis in our communities but it ain’t nothing compared to the road we’ve traveled. Did you know that walking just 30 minutes every day reduces the risk of heart disease by 35% and diabetes by 58%. Oh, we got this! If Harriet could walk her way to freedom, WE can walk for better health! WHAT IS TUBMAN DAY? ! Did you know that March 10th was designated by Congress as Harriet Tubman Day? We need to bring this holiday to the world stage so that her sacrifices and example are never forgotten. WHAT IS THE GOAL? ! Our goal is to inspire 1000 brave and committed sisters – like you - to help us lead this tribute. Leading means hosting a party with 6 of your friends on Friday, March 10th. If we do that, we believe we will have sisters walking with us in every Black community in the country on Saturday morning. You ready!? WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? FAQs ! After Harriet Tubman Weekend, the real determination begins. Who’s gonna’ turn back now? GirlTrek’s official walking season starts April 1st. For 9-month straight we go hard with monthly walking challenges. That means you and your party guest have three weeks to get your heat and minds ready to walk it out with GirlTrek. Put your walking shoes by the door, schedule your first walk on GirlTrek’s national map and use #GirlTrek to start sharing your photos. #HARRIET TUBMAN CELEBRATION WEEKEND HARRIET TUBMAN 1849: In September 1849, Harriet Tubman made her first escape. She traveled with her brothers, Ben and Henry. Once they left, Tubman's brothers had second thoughts and the two men went back, forcing Tubman to return with them. A few weeks later, Tubman decided to walk alone. She learned the way to freedom then came back for family. Slowly, she charted a path – with connections, allies and safe houses - from Maryland to Philadelphia. Soon after, she returned to rescue her family. Once they were safe, she came back to rescue countless other men, women and children. Years later, addressing rooms full of abolitionists, Harriet Tubman confirmed, “I never lost a passenger.” Our Lesson:We have to save ourselves first. Sometimes we have to walk alone. We are facing a health crisis of epic proportion and we HAVE save ourselves by learning the practical way forward. Once we succeed, THEN we can use that know-how to save our families and communities. Like Harriet, each of us has the power to be guiding lights - heroes in our households. We want the world to know that it’s going down in honor of our hero, Harriet Tubman! #HARRIET TUBMAN CELEBRATION WEEKEND 5. Many believe Harriet Tubman escaped from the deep South. Actually, Harriet Tubman escaped from the Eastern Shore of Maryland which is about 65 air miles southeast of Washington, DC. From Maryland, she walked over 100 miles to freedom – across the Mason Dixon line – to Philadelphia. 6. 10 FACTS 1. called Minty. She would later adopt the name "Harriet" to pay respect to her mother: Harriet Ross. The surname Tubman comes from her first husband, John Tubman, who she married in 1844. (John tried to dissuade her from escaping and later marred another woman and refused to leave Maryland. We can imagine sister Tubman saying, “Ain’t nobody got time for that.”) As a child, Harriet learned that her maternal grandmother was Ashanti, from the Gold Coast of Africa. She was proud of the fact that she came from a strong legacy of prophesy and matrilineal power. An 3. American Hero Harriet Tubman was under constant threat. She was an enemy of the state, a constant threat to the slaveholding establishment and the face and voice of the entire abolitionist movement. Frederick Douglas once said, “I know of no one who has willingly encountered more perils and hardships to serve our enslaved people than you have.” 4. The biggest man-hunt in American history ensued when a $40,000 bounty was put on Harriet Tubman’s head. The Fugitive Slave Act of 1850 also posed an ever-present danger, imposing severe punishments on anyone who helped her. 8. 1849: Harriet Tubman was born Araminta Ross. As a child she was 2. Harriet Tubman had a powerful relationship with God and, on her speaking tours, she often spoke of divine visions and revelations that helped her along the path. She encourages us to stay prayed up and to practice faith with our works. 7. WE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT HARRIET “For 11 years Tubman returned repeatedly to the Eastern Shore of, rescuing some 300 slaves in about 19 expeditions. She also provided specific instructions for about 50 to 60 other fugitives who escaped to the north” “Harriet wore many hats: She was an active proponent of women's suffrage and worked alongside women such as side Susan B. Anthony. During the civil war, Harriet also worked for the Union Army as a cook, a nurse and even a spy. Harriet was acquainted with leading abolitionists of the day, including John Brown who Consulted with "General Tubman" about His raid of Harpers Ferry.” 9. Harriet Tubman was the first woman to lead an armed expedition in the war, she guided the Combahee River Raid, which liberated more than 700 enslaved people in South Carolina 1913: 10. Just before Harriet's death she told friends and family, "I go to prepare a place for you." She was buried with military honors in Fort Hill Cemetery in Auburn, New York.
