Building hospitals
and futures
Currently the busiest obstetric facilities in Australia, Mater Mothers’ Hospital and Mater Mothers’
Private Hospital have delivered more than 260,000 babies since their doors opened in December 1960.
In fact, one in six Queenslanders are born at one of the Mater Mothers’ Hospitals.
Situated in the thriving inner city suburb of South Brisbane, Mater Mothers’ is a defining landmark
and a Brisbane icon offering exceptional opportunities for obstetricians, gynaecologists, midwives,
nurses and allied health professionals.
M
ater Mothers’ Hospitals manage more than 7,600 births and 1,200 neonatal admissions each
year, including at least 100 neonatal retrievals. The hospitals provide antenatal, perinatal and postnatal
services and specialise in caring for severe complications in pregnancy, as well as newborn disorders.
Additionally, an ambulatory service provides a number of midwifery antenatal outreach clinics and a
Home Care Program.
The Mater Mothers’ Hospital Neonatology Unit has cared for more than 39,000 babies since opening,
including some of Australia’s smallest surviving babies.
The Mater Centre for Maternal Fetal Medicine is one of Australia’s leading providers in this complex
field. The Centre is managed by fully-accredited Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialists and is at the
forefront in the development of innovative techniques such as ultrasound via telemedicine, first
trimester ultrasound screening and intra-utero fetal laser therapy for babies with Twin-Twin Transfusion
syndrome.
We’re expecting
In Australia’s fastest growing city, Mater Mothers’ Hospitals are laying the foundations for generations
to come.
Set to open in March 2008, the new eight story Mater Mothers’ facility will be the premier obstetric
hospital in the Southern Hemisphere boasting 88 public and 90 private maternity beds as well as 16
birthing suites.
Mater Mothers’ Hospitals will provide integrated tertiary services for women and babies including,
obstetrics, gynaecology, neonatal, maternal fetal medicine, obstetric medicine, perinatal outreach
education and midwifery group practice.

with the Birthing Suites. Managed by Mater Mothers’ midwives this unit will enable women with
pregnancy-related concerns to be reviewed in a setting that is comfortable and inviting. Women
will have the ability to access the support of obstetric, medical, and allied health professionals as
required.

environment

embrace ecologically sustainable principles, using natural materials, water harvesting and energy
saving technology.
The new facility will incorporate a modern feel and finish to provide an aesthetically pleasing
environment for patients, doctors and staff. Contemporary and traditional artworks will enhance the
functionality and design of the new building, reflecting Mater’s heritage and vision.
