Commemorating the 50th
Anniversary of Peter Snell’s
World 800m/880yds Records set
at Lancaster Park in Christchurch,
Feb 3rd 1962.
FOREWORD - PETER SNELL
On behalf of the International Track and Field
Trust and the athletics community of Canterbury,
it is my pleasure to welcome you to the 2012
International Track Meet. This event holds
a special place on the New Zealand track
and field calendar, and it is exciting to have
something which showcases the talents of our
top stars like Valerie Adams and Nick Willis as
well as providing a development opportunity to
our stars of the future.
This year the event also holds special meaning
in two further ways, by commemorating the
victims of the earthquake almost a year ago
today with the Brian Taylor Memorial 3000m,
and celebrating the 50th anniversary of the day
at Lancaster Park when I was able to set two
world records - like this meet, that too was on
grass. I have very fond memories of competing
in Christchurch all those years ago, and of the
roar of support from the Canterbury crowd, and
I know you will cheer on the athletes of today
with as much passion and enthusiasm as was
the case in 1962.
On behalf of everyone involved, thank you to
the international visitors who have travelled so
far to be a part of this event. I wish the athletes
and the fans all the very best for a successful
afternoon, and trust you will enjoy this display
of international track and field talent. Also,
I send my warmest regards to the people of
Christchurch as you rebuild your city. Sympathy
for all the people of Christchurch after last
February’s disaster certainly reached as far as
Dallas, Texas, where there was a heart-felt and
generous response. Today’s track meet again
shows the spirit and determination traditional for
Canterbury sports people.
Best wishes,
Peter Snell
HOW IT ALL BEGAN...
In late 2008 Nick Willis expressed a desire
to compete back home in New Zealand at
an international level in a track & field event
that showcased the sport. This got four guys,
who quite like running, reminiscing about their
childhood heros and the brilliant athletics events
they grew up with, like the 1990’s International
Track series (established by Dick Quax and the
late John Davies) and the Robin Tait Classic
meeting (Graeme Avery). The International Track
Meet was born.
The International Track Meet has gained
momentum as New Zealand’s foremost track and
field event. Now in its fourth year including the
disaster of 2011 the team is rebuilding this event.
The event ownership has now been placed into
the International Track & Field Trust which has
charitable status and is for the benefit of the
sport, not for profit. Any financial gain will be
invested back into making subsequent years
events bigger and better. You can play your part
in supporting the event by joining the Supporters
Club (see page 33).
Our mission is to promote the sport of athletics
and provide quality international competition
during the New Zealand domestic season.
The event in turn provides a development
pathway for both established and aspiring
athletes. The International Track Meet provides
the sporting public of New Zealand with a rare
opportunity to watch our Kiwi stars compete
against some of the best athletes in the world.
Sit back, relax and enjoy the programme

Defining Moments Of World Class
Track & Field In Christchurch
by Roger Robinson
The fourth Christchurch International Track
Meet on February 4th, with its feature
shot put, discus and two mile handicap is
the latest in a long tradition of bringing
world stars to Christchurch at the height of
our track season. Athletics in Canterbury
has always been enterprising, and New
Zealand athletes like nothing better than
to entertain world stars, and then do their
best to beat them.
Here is a selection of great international
track and field moments in Christchurch in
the last hundred years.
Middle-distance
1905 Multiple world-record holder Alf
Shrubb, suffering from the six-week voyage
from England and heat problems in Australia,
got buried in the mile in the NZ champs in
Christchurch by local runner Hector Burk, who
broke the national record with 4:27.4.
1914 American J. Power set an Australasian
all-comers’ record for the mile of 4:18.4.
1926
On a muddy and cold English Park
in February, Masterton farmer Randolph Rose
clinched his 3-race series against visiting star
Lloyd Hahn, with a flying last lap that left the
American floundering 5 seconds back, and gave
Rose an Australasian record, and world grasstrack record, of 4:13.6.
1962 Peter Snell came to Lancaster Park
fresh from his world mile record at Whanganui,
to race two top Americans, Jim Dupree and
John Bork, over 880 yards. The result entered
sports legend – an 800 time of 1:44.3 (1.4
secs under the world record) and 880 of
1:45.1 (1.7 under the world record). That was
on grass, remember.
6
1974
Highlight of the Commonwealth
Games at QEII had to be Tanzanian Filbert
Bayi’s dream world record 1500 in 3:32.2. For
many, it still stands as the greatest 1500/mile
race of all time. Five national records were set
– Tanzania, New Zealand (John Walker 2nd),
Kenya (Ben Jipcho 3rd), Australia (Graeme
Crouch 5th), and Great Britain. Through the
announcer’s window I asked Brendan Foster
how it felt to break the British record and finish
only 7th. His reply is still unprintable. Bayi’s
time remains the New Zealand all-comers’
record. Those 1974 Games produced race
after race better than any Olympics. Other
great middle-distance ones included near world
records by Kenyans John Kipkurgat and Mike
Boit (Kenya) in the 800 (1:43.9) and Ben Jipcho
in the 3000 steeplechase (8:20.8), and huge
Games records by Charlene Rendina (Australia)
in the 800 (2:01.1) and Glenda Reiser
(Canada) in the 1500 (4:07.8).
1975
Still high on 1974 endorphins, the
Games organising committee put on the New
Zealand Games, “to capitalise on facilities and
know-how from the Commonwealth Games
and provide top-class international competition.”
In another fabulous track programme, twelve
New Zealand all-comers’ records were broken.
Notable were Dick Quax’s 5000 victory over
Mjaya Nyambui (Tanzania) and Henry Rono
(Kenya), sublime sprinting in the 200 by
Olympic champion Valeriy Borzov (USSR),
Dianne Zorn/Rodgers’ record 3000, another
win for Bayi over Walker at 800, and Walker’s
1500 metres win against top runners from
seven countries.
1980 The best of the Pan-Am/South Pacific
TV series saw a Christchurch meet highlighted
by a 4:07.7 1500 by Mary Decker (USA), Brit
Mick McLeod’s cheeky defeat of Henry Rono
over 5000, and Kenyan James Maina’s 800.
2009 The visionary new Christchurch
International Track Meet gloriously overcame
injury gremlins that struck its featured stars,
potential sub-3:50 milers Nick Willis and Andy
Baddeley. An Aussie thriller filled that gap, with
Jeff Risely (3:54.24) edging Collis Birmingham
(3:54.36). Five men under four minutes made
it the greatest mile ever run in New Zealand,
with Jason Woolhouse (4th in 3:59.80) the
newest Kiwi in the sub-4 club. Kiwi sprinters
also shone, with Monique Williams setting a
women’s resident 200 record of 23.26 and
sensational local David Ambler scorching a
stadium and NZ under-19 record of 10.35.
Ryan Gregson’s Australian under-19 3000
record of 7:57.45 topped off the best
Christchurch meet since 1975.
A year later, in the 1975 New Zealand Games,
a slower but fiercely contested 10,000 was
won by Dutchman Jos Hermens (28:56.4),
from Kenyans Henry Rono and Richard Juma.
A few months later Hermens broke the world
record for 10 miles, and is now known as
the manager of Haile Gebrselassie and other
world stars. In seventh place behind Hermens
came the globally next most significant 10,000
in Christchurch history – Jack Foster’s world
masters (over-40) record, 29:11.4.
2010 Nick Willis began the long run-up
to his 2010 Commonwealth Games bronze
medal with an 800, missing out on the sprint
to Australian Jeff Riseley (1:47:75). Aussie
manager Nic Bideau again brought over his
talented squad, who swept the 1500, Ryan
Gregson winning in 3:41.69, with Wellington’s
Hamish Carson in fourth, finding the form that
gave him his first New Zealand title a week later,
also at QEII.
what might of been in 2011.
10,000m Dick Tayler set the 1974
Commonwealth Games and all Christchurch
afire when he won the 10,000 on the first day
at QEII, in 27:46.4. That is still, 37 years later,
the fastest ever run in New Zealand, and would
have been in the field’s sights on Feb 26th
2011. Tayler’s last laps astounded the favoured
Kenyans and Brits (including world recordholder Dave Bedford) and reduced the crowd to
wordless screaming. It was high comedy as well
as high drama as the spectators’ patriotic chant
of “Black! Black! Black!” faded away, when they
noticed that Tayler’s rivals near the end were a
black Kenyan and an Englishman named Black.
There was one other wondrous global track and
field gathering in QEII history, the 1981 World
Masters Championships. Antonio Villanueva
(Mexico) won the over-40 10,000 in another
veteran scorcher, 29:52.1 (from, by the way,
Roger Robinson, New Zealand). See pg 12 for
Shot and Discus
The historic heave came
in 1974, when Robin Tait floated his thirdround throw on the QEII air-currents to win the
Commonwealth Games discus (63.08), and join
Dick Tayler as New Zealand’s gold medallists.
The women’s shot in those Games went to Jane
Haist (Canada, 16:12) from Canterbury and New
Zealand legend Valerie Young. We saw two world
class women throwers face off again at QEII in
the 2010 ITM discus, with world champion Dani
Samuels (Australia, 63:38) defeating come-back
former world champ Beatrice Faumuina (New
Zealand). Nine days later, at the Athletics New
Zealand champs, Christchurch was treated to a
view of Valerie Adams, the only New Zealander
ever to win Olympic, World, and Commonwealth
titles. She took the shot title by more than 5
metres, with 19.60, a distance she will hope to
beat on February 4th 2012.
Roger Robinson, an award-winning writer,
was stadium announcer at the 1974 and 1990
Commonwealth Games. He will be guest
announcer at the ITM on February 4th. His books
are available from www.roger-robinson.com

The Greatest Track Meet
that Never Happened
Christchurch International Track Meet, February 26, 2011
On February 22, 2011, the city of Christchurch
was hit by an earthquake that punched up like
a giant fist through the surface of the earth,
directly under the city’s central business district.
Many buildings and homes were destroyed
or seriously damaged, and nearly 200 people
were killed, including a leading running coach
and administrator, Brian Taylor. Among the
many wrecked facilities was Queen Elizabeth
II Stadium, whose fabled track had been
scene of the 1974 Commonwealth Games,
1975 New Zealand Games, 1981 World
Masters Championships, 2011 Paralympic
World Athletics Championships, and other
major athletics events. With no track, a
severely damaged city infrastructure, and the
community in shock, the International Track
Meet, scheduled four days later, was cancelled.
A successful meet was held in Wellington,
raising $20,000 for Christchurch relief. Nick
Willis’s 2008 Olympic silver medal was formally
presented to him there, instead of at the
Christchurch meet as planned.
Nothing will obviate the losses of that disaster,
but Christchurch and New Zealand have begun
to heal, and sport is making its usual major
contribution to that process. In that spirit of
healing, we have done some imagining. Part of
the frustration of the quake was that the ITM
was shaping up so well. What if the quake had
not happened and the Track Meet had? What
new marks would Christchurch have celebrated
making in athletics history that February night in
2011?
Silver lining for Willis
What a curtain raiser! The 10,000 plus strong
crowd poured into QEII to make sure they didn’t
miss the first-ever presentation of an Olympic
medal on New Zealand soil. They were bubbling
with high spirits and had lumps in their throats
as Nick Willis received his 2008 Olympic
1500m silver, upgraded (after a disqualification)
from the bronze he received in Beijing. With
the legendary Sir John Walker making the
presentation, it was double jubilation.
8
Close contests in perfect conditions
The crowd was back on their feet a few moments
later, as three 400m hurdlers charged off the last
bend in lockstep and battled down the straight.
Daylight opened between them only at the final
hurdle, as Michael Cochrane surged to win in
a meet and New Zealand M20 record 50.62,
just ahead of James Mortimer (51.16) and David
O’Shea (51.68).
Women beat men
The open high jump ended in a mixed-gender
tie, between Liz Lamb (1.81) and Billy Crayford
(2.12), level on points. Sarah Cowley was in
action again with a third place.
In world terms, things got better and better.
Jemma Simpson, the 2009 British champion,
won the women’s 800m in a swift meet record
2:02.88, beating previous record-holder
Angie Smit (2:03.56). The men’s 800m had
runners from Australia, New Caledonia, New
Zealand, Samoa and USA, and it was the classy
Americans who prevailed. Alan Webb, the US
mile record holder and one of the great American
names of the last decade, won in 1:46.62, from
Tyler Mulder, 1:46.81 and James Gurr 1:46.94.
It was a wonderful race that looked cutting-edge
world-class (provided you didn’t remember that
Peter Snell running on grass in 1962 would have
been clear by two seconds).
Hairsbreadth finishes
Up jumped the crowd again for the hairsbreadth
finish of the men’s 400m, with Alex Jordan 46.61
and Andy Moore on 46.96 while Australia’s
Alexander Carew took third (47.23, PB). Another
rousingly close track finish saw Daniel Balchin
edge Julian Oakley in the under-23 1500m
(3:51.70/3:51.75).
Kiwis triumph
Commonwealth Games medallists Nikki Hamblin
and Nick Willis stirred patriotic spirits with
superb victories. Hamblin in the women’s mile
did most of the leading, surging impeccably away
on the last 300m for a New Zealand Resident
record 4:30.75, followed home by Australian
Lisa Corrigan in 4:31.18. Willis left it later in the
men’s 1500m. Matt Harris set the pace perfectly,
and when he pulled off at 600m to go the pack
looked vibrant and very classy – Michigan-based
Brit Lee Emmanuel took up the front running,
followed closely by Will Leer (USA), Brandon
Bethke (USA), James Nipperess (Australia),
American 800 star Nick Symmonds, and Willis
in his usual sheep-dog position at the tail of the
line. Just behind were kiwis Hamish Carson and
Hayden McLaren.
Truly international
The meet got truly international half-way through
the evening, with the sprints and 800s. In the
women’s 200m Andrea Koenen had to beat
England’s Mel Purkiss (24.05/24.41), and
Scotland’s powerful Nick Smith won the men’s
100m in 10.42 against a personal best 10.43
by Carl Van der Speck. Australia was again in
arrears, with Dan Martin third. Paul Zongo broke
his own New Caledonia national record finishing
fifth in 10.68.
Predictably and (for the crowd) delectably, it was
Willis who swept round the pack as they came
off the last bend, sending the stadium delirious
with a pulsating finish that made us all think
of Snell and Walker. He took the race and the
meet record with 3:36.87, a nice performance
at the beginning of a world championships year.
Leer, popular with the crowd for his long 1960s
hair and even longer moustache, was second
in 3:37.07, and Symmonds, who had seemed to
lose contact along the back straight, found his
A woman’s victory that was less of a surprise
came from New Zealand’s all-conquering
superstar Valerie Adams. The world, Olympic and
Commonwealth champion received a standing
ovation from the crowd, and then dominated the
all-comers shot put, climaxing in the final round
with the biggest put ever seen in New Zealand,
20.53, an all-comers record, to Dale Stevenson’s
20.28 and Tom Walsh’s 18.17.
800 speed and charged barrel-chested through
to third (3:38.59). Emmanuel took fourth in a
season’s best 3:38.78, an especially pleasing
result to imagine for those of us who saw him fall
badly in the real-life race that most of this field
actually ran in Wellington on Feb 26th. Everyone
else in our fantasy field ran personal bests,
our way of showing our hopes for the future of
Hayden McLaren (3:39.55) and Hamish Carson
(3:39.97).
Rupping it Up
A memorable night ended with an assault on the
American 10,000m record by Galen Rupp. If he
did it (26:59.60) he would also be way under
Dick Tayler’s legendary New Zealand resident and
QEII stadium record of 27:46.4 from the 1974
Commonwealth Games. Titus M’bishei of Kenya
had been brought in by coach Alberto Salazar
as pace-maker, and did an excellent job to well
beyond halfway. But in the eighth kilometre the
pace was drifting outside the target schedule
and Rupp took over. Huge crowd support
and a fervent atmosphere under the glowing
floodlights lifted him, but six laps solo were just
too demanding, and the final time was 27:28.57,
well inside Tayler’s mark. M’bishei held on to
29:32.19, and third was New Zealand champion
Stephen Lett who had a lonely but impressive
race for 29:36.68.
Note: In September, Rupp broke Chris Solinsky’s
US 10,000m record with 26:48.00, making him
the fastest non-African in history. The planned
attempt to run that speed at Christchurch in
February was not a fantasy, although our race
narrative is.
Imagine
One final celebratory moment came when the
final presentation of the evening, to Rupp for the
10,000m, was made by the prominent Canterbury
runner, coach and administrator Brian Taylor.
