Signs and symptoms of white mold (southern stem blight) in peanuts DuPont™ Fontelis® fungicide Active ingredient name: Penthiopyrad Chemical class: FRAC Group 7, carboxamides Formulation: 20 SC DuPont™ Fontelis® fungicide: a proven track record in peanuts Since launching in 2012, Fontelis® has delivered excellent control of key peanut diseases, such as white mold (southern stem blight), leaf spots and rusts, and other soil and foliar diseases. Whether Fontelis® is used two or three times in a program, results from 2007 to 2015 show that Fontelis® increased yield over competitive programs by an average of 339 lbs/A.* Two signs of this disease are white cottony growth (fungal mycelium) and round, brown sclerotial bodies on the peanut stems and soil. Symptoms are stem rot with wilt and death of affected foliage. A recent Georgia on-farm, replicated, large-plot trial by Bulloch County Extension resulted in timely white mold control and yield results, demonstrating the enduring activity of Fontelis® for this tough-to-control peanut disease. *Competitive programs compared to Fontelis® two- or three-spray programs (2007–2015) were under similar conditions. In place of Fontelis®, competing programs used two or three applications of 18.2 fl oz/A Abound, 13–16 fl oz/A Convoy + 1.5 pt/A Bravo Weather Stik, or 7 fl oz/A Provost. Another competing program used straight chlorothalonil at 1.5 pt/A. Yield values: Fontelis® (n = 69), competing program (n = 86), nontreated (n = 43). Under certain conditions, white mold can move along the underground plant parts and affect the nuts, causing direct losses. Photos courtesy of University of Georgia, Department of Plant Pathology.
