1
It is winter in Antarctica. It is cold
and windy. A group of birds huddle
together on the ice to stay warm.
They are large, black and white birds.
They cannot fly. What are these birds?
They are Emperor Penguins. They are
the largest penguins in the world.
2
Antarctica is a hard place to live. Not
many animals live in Antarctica. Emperor
Penguins are the only birds to live in this
cold place. They must work together
to survive.
3
Emperor Penguins’ feathers help them
live in their environment. Their feathers
help keep them warm. Emperor Penguins
eat fish. They must find fish in the icy,
cold water. Their
feathers protect them
from the cold water
when they look for fish.
4
Emperor Penguins
are great swimmers.
They swim through
water to catch fish.
But the penguins must be careful. Fish
is not the only thing that lives in the
water. Leopard Seals live there too. They
attack Emperor
Penguins.
5
During spring,
Emperor Penguins
start their migration
south. Migration
means to move. Their
migration is not long,
but it is very hard.
Antarctica is the coldest place on Earth.
This makes their migration the coldest in
the world.
6
Emperor Penguins work together.
They huddle together to block the cold
wind. The penguins on the outside of the
huddle block the wind for the penguins
on the inside. The penguins take turns
sharing the warm middle of the huddle.
7
The Emperor
Penguin migration
stops in the summer. During summer,
they mate and lay eggs. At the end
of summer the eggs hatch into baby
penguins. During fall, the parents watch
and feed
their babies.
8
During winter, Emperor Penguins start
their migration back north. This ends their
migration until next spring when they leave
to migrate south again.
9
The Emperor Penguin migration is
famous. These penguins work together
to survive in the coldest place on Earth.
