Teachers will give short book talks on the morning announcements
Monday-Friday. Door Decorating- Judged on Wednesday. Reading
Million Minute Marathon Book Fair- Jan. 27-Feb. 5th
Door Decorating Contest: Teachers & Students will decorate their
doors using the theme: Literacy Changes Our World! Each teacher
will decorate their classroom door with a theme of literacy.
Decorations may feature one specific book, a genre of books, or focus
on the importance of reading. Doors must be completed by Wednesday
for the judging. Winners will be announced on BA TV Thursday
morning. The winning classrooms will receive a popsicle party!
“Whose Book is it Anyway?” A line/paragraph from a book will be
read and students will guess which book it came from. In the media
center there will be a box for the students to submit their answers. 3
Correct answers will receive a free paperback book from the book fair.

Jan. 26
Administrators or members of the Leadership team will do a book talk
on a Sunshine State Reader Book. They will be recorded and this will
be shown school wide.
Posters will be displayed of administrators reading their favorite book.
“Hats off to a Good Book” Students can wear a hat to school to

buddy with a primary class.

Crazy Sock Day: Students will show off their crazy socks to show
they are crazy into reading.
Curl Up With a Good Book- Students will pay $1 (to raise money for
Literacy Council, which will be used to support ELA) to wear jeans.
Feeling Groovy About Reading: (Book Fair Theme): Teachers will
dress up like they were in the 1960’s. Each teacher that dresses up will
receive 10% off at the book fair.

Students are given an opportunity to read for an additional 20 minutes
during the day.
Mystery Book- A short passage will be read from a book on the morning
announcements. Teachers will turn in their class answers to the media center.
All correct answers will be put into a draing for a prize.
Mystery Readers- Guest readers will read a story to the students in the
Cafeteria. The reader will be behind the curtain on the stage. Students will
guess who the name of the reader
Poetry Cafe Contest- Students are asked to submit an original piece of
poetry. Winning pieces will be ready on the morning announcements.
Students will rotate thru the media center to view display of faculty and staff's
favorite book and descrption of why they enjoyed that book.

Each grade will be assigned a decade to research. Students will research influential
books, people, music, ect that helped shape society. Research will take place
throughout the week. Classes will make a poster that showcases their research.
Students will dress in clothing that represent the decade they studied.*A drawing
will take place to assign decades. Teachers will know a week in advance. Students
will receive this information on announcements on 1/25.
Vocab parade. Parents will be invited. Students will parade through the cafeteria.

o Literacy week has a civics- based theme: Literacy Changes Our World. Promotes literacy
and good citizenship.
o Look into grades 3-5 using the computer labs to research their decades.

displayed for students to see. Students will guess who is in each picture. The students
with the most matches will win a prize.
o Read experts from a biography (influential citizens) during announcements. Students
will guess who the biography is about.

their author study (K-2), or will dress to reflect a
vocabulary word (3-5), parading around the school for all
to see and enjoy.

The Book with No Pictures by R.J. Novak, which will be aired
for students and teachers to see periodically throughout the week.

1. Encourage staff to display a book that they are reading in the classroom.
2. Program delivered during cross-curricular PLCs.
Authors, Books, and Sharing --10 minute author and book talk. Teachers are given recommendation sheet with
author bio and annotated list of works as well as tips for what kind of student to recommend
these books to. Media specialist or reading coach will discuss the author briefly and then offer
book talk of one of the author’s books.
--Teachers will keep author sheets in a binder on their desks labelled, book
recommendations. This is for teacher and student use.
--Teachers will share a book talk with students at least twice a month.
3. School based Book Club.

1. Reading classes will complete Book Shopping—Optimum time to browse the library’s book
collection in a book store like setting.
2. ELA classes—focused book activities that relate to curriculum at the moment, as opportunities
arise.

Zenith Celebrate Literacy Week 2015-2016
Jan 25 MONDAY – BOOK COVER – We will have a station set up in the media center for
students to draw the front cover of their favorite book. We will place these sheets in the main hallway.
Prizes will be given.
Jan 26 Tuesday – Gallery Walk of Teacher Favorite’s - Before school, lunch and after
school. (Teachers who provide a book for the Book Gallery on Tuesday, will receive a coupon
for 2 hours of early release.)
Students will be invited to come to the media center to view and vote on the faculty’s favorite books.
Each teacher will select a book of their ‘choice’ to display in the media center that reflects one of their
favorite books. The faculty member will prepare on an index card why their book is their favorite and
why the student body should vote for this book as the number one favorite book. The faculty member
who wins will earn a spectacular prize!
Jan 27 Wednesday - Literary Character Dress Day - If a student/teacher dresses, they must
give a 2 minute talk in their 1st period class describing their character’s attributes. Prizes will be given.
Jan 28 Thursday and FRIDAY– Scavenger Hunt in the Media Center – Before school
and at lunch. Students will be invited to attend the scavenger hunt in the media center to earn a ticket.
Jan 29 Friday TEACHER/Administrator Literacy Talk Each 1st period teacher will talk to
their class regarding the importance of literacy in their lives. In other words, what impact has literacy
made on their lives. Members from the front office will be visiting classrooms to talk to students on the
importance of literacy in their lives.
Student government will assist us this week in the media center for the Gallery Walk and the Scavenger
Hunt.
