ACCOUNTING AND BOOKKEEPING, ca

OVERVIEW
Title: Warshaw Collection of Business Americana: Business Ephemera: Men’s Clothing
Extent and Forms of Material 6 cubic feet, including (18 boxes, 12 oversize folders)
Scope and Content: This subject category-Men’s Clothing consists primarily of
advertisements, price lists, receipts, correspondence on letterhead stationary, invoices,
brochures, trade catalogs, patents, import and export documents, fabric samples, sample
books, images and publications. The materials relate primarily to the production and sale
of clothing for both men and boys in the United States. There are also some materials from
England, Ireland, Canada, Japan, and France. The materials were created for the consumer
market. Clothing items include shirts, collars, neckties, vests, suspenders, pants,
overcoats, and hats. There are also fabric swatches included with the some illustrations of
the clothing items, along with detailed descriptions. Oversize materials are comprised of
printed advertisements, brochures, catalogs, displays, price lists, related publications and
images that are primarily from periodicals.
Series 1, Manufacturers and Distributors, circa 1818-1943; undated, includes bills,
receipts, business cards, advertising cards, printed advertisements, business
correspondence on letterhead stationary and invoices from manufacturers and sellers of
men’s clothing. Businesses range in size from sole proprietors or tailors to large
manufacturers like Cluett Peabody, makers of the Arrow shirt, and large retailers such as
Brooks Brothers. The companies were located primarily in the Northeastern United States
including New York, Massachusetts, and Pennsylvania, with several from other areas in
the United States and a few from England and Canada. A number of the companies were
located in Troy, New York, known as the collar city, as noted on the city of Troy, New
York web site, www.troyny.gov. Some of the materials document family owned and
operated businesses. The materials also reflect the changing ownerships and partnerships
for many of the businesses. Materials are arranged in alphabetical order by the name of the
company. When the name of the company was not available the materials were organized
by brand name.
Series 2, General Materials, 1833-1896, includes images of men’s clothing on
advertising cards, illustrations and advertisements for clothing stores and manufacturers.
There are also unidentified items including receipts, business cards, fabric samples, and
business correspondence where the name of the business is illegible or unavailable. Other
materials include import and export documents, a list of merchandise (1896), a
merchandise receipt (1896) and a parcel receipt (1896). There are a number of forms
including an Immediate Transportation in Bond Without Appraisement form (1896), a
form from Hampton & Larzelere, Custom House Brokers of Philadelphia (1876), a form
“To be endorsed on, or attached by seal and tape to, each of the triplicate invoices”
(1876), a notation of “Liquidated Duty” (1876), Receipt (1889), Receipt “for liquidation
“ (1890), “For Liquidation” (1897), advertisements, a business card, and an advertising
coin, and forms for “Free Entry of Articles Intended for use of Colleges, Schools,

&c”(1884). Patents for a rolling collar, 1882; a buckle 1883; a trademark for Shirtwaists
and Drawers, 1879 and a trademark for shirts, (1882). Materials are arranged by type.
Series 3, Publications, circa 1881-1973; undated, include articles, magazines and
books. Article subjects include the manufacturing of linen collars and clothes in general.
Many of the magazines document what was occurring in the clothing trade for men and
juveniles. The books are housed in two folders. Clothes Make The Man by Elliott White
Springs of the Springs Cotton Mils in Lancaster, South Carolina, and maker of Springmaid
Sheets contains eight several short stories, business correspondence about the mills 19341947, and illustrations: Miss Springmaid 1949, undated photographs of “The Weave
Shed”, “The Bennett Rice Mill in Charleston” and a photograph captioned “We Love to
Catch Them on a Springmaid Sheet”, photographs of the company headquarters, exterior
image of the company headquarters and interior office shot, office furniture made out of
old factory machinery, and photos of women models appearing with SpringMaid products,
the 1948 SpringMaid Beauty Contest, advertisements from the early fifties, and a “brief
history”of the Lancaster and Chester Railway (South Carolina). The other book, Holiday
Amusements describes party games, riddles, and tricks for entertaining. Materials are
arranged first by type and then in alphabetical order.
System of Arrangement: The arrangement scheme for Isadore Warshaw’s aggregation of
Men’s Clothing materials is created by the Archives Center. It is arranged into three
