Well, we did it! Adolph Kuehn’s vision for a place where German
heritage could be celebrated through song, celebration and friendship,
our beloved Germania, has been a part of Poughkeepsie and Hudson
Valley history for one hundred sixty years.

The beginning of our one hundred sixty first year is off to a mixed start.
On one hand, we are in pretty good shape financially right now. We
ended 2010 on a positive note budget wise, but we are experiencing
way too many illnesses and injuries among our members.
Janett Frank does a great job in keeping up with the news of how our
members are doing. Quietly, in the background, she keeps track and
makes certain that a card goes out to let you know we are thinking of
you. The list recited at the Semi-annual meeting was way too long!
Please take a moment each day and set it aside to pray for our members
experiencing illness or the aftermath of an injury. I am sure it will make
a positive difference to them all. Let’s all pray good health in 2011 and
get that list down to zero.

Our heritage will be put on public display Saturday February 12, 2011
at the Center Court of the Poughkeepsie Galleria Mall. Our Singers,
Schuhplattler's and our German culinary magic will be featured in our
annual all day event that gets us great exposure to the community. All
of our regular bakers will be hard at work preparing, but you can help
as well. We need plenty of help at the event at the baked goods table,
organizing and also just being an “Ambassador” for Germania. The
main focus of this event is to make people aware of us and generate
interest for our events as well as draw new members to our club.

CONVERSATIONAL GERMAN language classes began on
January 6, 2011 and will be held every Thursday from 6-6:45 pm
until April 14, 2011. It’s not too late to participate but you should
know that if attendance is not at least five students then remaining
classes will need to be cancelled. Frau Karen Wagner will teach time,
shopping, greetings, travel language, and other themes as the class
deems important. Homework will not be assigned. Practicing is strongly
encouraged. Deutsch macht spaß! For more information, please contact

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1
The Christkindlmarkt was a great event again in 2010. The goal has been to make it a little “better” each year,
and that is happening nicely. Janett and Grete co-chaired the event this year again and it was wonderful.
Christkindlmarkt is truly on its way to become a community tradition! Evelyn Blatz and Helga Novak-Razey
stepped in to help coordinate the event for the Board and we thank them for their hard work too.
A special thank you goes out to The Singers and the Soccer club for the generous Christmas gifts of cash to
Germania. It will certainly be put to good use. The Schuhplattler’s gift this year was two bakery boxes capable
of handling and displaying baked goods at our future fund raising events. Thank you to them also!
This Christmas season was beautiful at Germania thanks to Thomas Mercer. The
club looked wonderful all decked out in red and white Christmas candies! The
Christmas tree donated by the Soccer Club was majestic and beautiful as it
represented one of many Christmas traditions that came about through our German
heritage. The Christmas party was a huge success thanks to all of the volunteers
who worked so hard putting it together. I think a great time was had by all who
attended, and I can tell you that it was a great financial success also.
New Year’s Eve was an equally successful event due to our great volunteers. 2011 was ushered in with great
food and celebration. Special thanks to Melissa (yes “my” Melissa) for bartending that night despite being in the
hospital for a couple of day previous!
Gisela Hetherington coordinated the parties and made certain that they were a great success. She succeeded and
they were! Robin and Gerhard worked in the kitchen for both events and provided us with delicious meals that
were in keeping with the festive celebrations of the season. Thanks again from everyone at Germania.
Speaking of Gerhard and Robin, I want to personally thank them for all they did in 2010 to make our year a
success. Gerhard was appointed House Chairman by the Board some time ago, and he works very hard in that
role to be certain Germania is a success. Their annual pilgrimage to Florida has them basking in the sun while
we are shivering, but there’s more to the story. The Board sought out numerous volunteers to take over what the
two of them have been doing each week. Rentals, cooking, cleaning bathrooms between rentals, handling
garbage issues, ordering, shopping, and opening the club, closing the club, being there for deliveries and on and
on.
The folks who have stepped up to take on specific parts of the job will no doubt find them challenging, but these
tasks are all vital to our continued success. We need to identify a volunteer who is willing to help coordinate the
phone calls to staff our events. Please call me if you are interested in helping. All of our Committee Chair’s are
reminded that you are responsible to see that your event or area has what it needs to get the job done in their
absence.
Grete continues to make certain that Germania provides a weekly Wednesday lunch to a dedicated group of
lunchtime diners each week. Those lunches provide another way for our members to get together, enjoy Grete’s
great food and support the club! Margarethe and Monica worked hard in 2010 to provide numerous meals and
events. Friday dinners, Biergarten preparation and International dinners to name a few. We would not have been
so successful without Grete, Margarethe and Monica. Be sure to say thank them when you see them.
2011 will be another great year if we all work together. We rely on volunteers and we ALL need to be very
aware of that fact. Your bartender is a volunteer, so are the waiters and waitresses. The cooks volunteer and so
does the dishwasher. We have no “staff”. Nobody gets paid for their work. So… if that fancy drink is not quite
right, your meal doesn’t come out of the kitchen fast enough or something just isn’t meeting your standards remember- you are members too. Please volunteer! Germania needs your help.
MEMBERSHIP CORNER by Gisela Hetherington:
We celebrated Christmas and New Year’s Eve in style. Both celebrations were a rousing success. Thomas Mercer out did
himself with the decorations and table centerpieces. Thomas, thank you. Your skill and decorations has brought elegance
to the club that all the members appreciate. Our Christmas as well as the New Year’s Eve party was genuine
GEMUETLICHKEIT, Happiness and Camaraderie. Any one that attended, either one or both parties, brought their
holiday spirit to the festivity and it made for a wonderful happy gathering of friends. The parties are only as good as the
people that attend; we had the most wonderful people attend and this resulted in absolute joyous evenings. Thank you for
coming and supporting our Club. My many thanks to the Volunteers that gave up their time to shop, cook, clean and
serve.

Congratulations! At this dinner party the Germania Executive Board and Trustees are introduced and their hard work and
dedication is acknowledged. We would also like to acknowledge Chef Darcy Sala and the students from CTI BOCES
culinary program for once again creating and serving a wonderful dinner, and Gisela Hetherington for chairing the event,
and special thanks to all those volunteers that assist Gisela with decorating, set up and clean up and all the in between.

Oktoberfest! Oktoberfest Planning Meetings are being held the 4th Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM. Please

need more information. Save the date! Oktoberfest is a major annual fundraiser for our club so please reserve
September 9, 10 and 11, 2011 and commit to attending and volunteering. Only with YOUR help can we

FRÜHLINGSGALA
Reserve April 2, 2011 for our 5th Annual Spring
Gala. This has proven to be a great affair with wonderful music, exquisite
food, and a splendid ambiance, but most of all joining our Germania
members and their friends - elegantly dressed - in having a grand time. The
Gala Committee has decided to keep the price at last year's level; you will
find that it is reasonable if compared with similar functions in the area. AND
REMEMBER: Proceeds benefit OUR Germania. I have been asked by
friends already, "When is your Gala? We want to come
again because we enjoyed dressing up, dancing, and
having a wonderful time." So ask your friends to join us!
Helga Nowak-Razey has designed a flyer for you included

LATEST NEWS FROM YOUR SUNSHINE LADY – by Janett Frank
The holiday season wasn’t too kind to quite a few of our Members. December found Marilyn and Charlie on a
wonderful Trip in Germany visiting several Christkindl Marts, only to have Marilyn slip and fall and break her leg
and end up in a (huge) hospital. This was confirmed by their traveling companions, Rudy and Ann Braun. While she
was at the hospital, they told her she would probably have to stay for a month, and so Marilyn and Charlie decided
against that, and she was flown home via medevac, and then hospitalized in Vassar Brothers, operated on and
released within days. She was sent home to recover, and was able to attend New Year’s Eve at Germania, via a
wheelchair. Great going Marilyn! It was so nice that you could spend New Year’s Eve with all your friends. We
wish nothing but the best for you in the coming year.
Most of us who attended the wonderful New Year’s Eve Party were shocked to learn of Eberhard Fischer’s
hospitalization immediately after Christmas in the Danbury Hospital. After finding what exactly was the cause of his
problem, he was put into treatment, and now can be found at home recovering under Doctor’s care. We all wish you
well Eddie, and hope no damage was done. Wishing you a complete recovery completely from your medical
journey.
December also found Ed Blatz and Ted Wagner in and out of the hospital trying to solve their individual health
problems. We wish both men well and a complete recovery from their diagnosis. We have recently been updated on
Ed’s condition and he was admitted to Sloan-Kettering. Our prayers go with you Ed.
The Holiday’s also found Jon’s lovely wife Melissa in the hospital for a short stay, only to have her faithfully join us
at New Year’s Eve, as our wonderful bartender. Our best wishes go out to you Melissa, and that your health
problems will be behind you this year.
We are still missing the friendly face of Fran Kalble, since she was hospitalized in late fall. We hope you are well
on the road to recovery, and hope to see your smiling face once again.
Get well wishes goes out to member Otto Schaedlich, husband of member Marguerite (Sis) Schaedlich, who is at
home recovering from an aneurysm he suffered in November. The latest news is that Otto is up and about, but not
quite 100% recovered. Hoping to see you soon Otto.
Our member and dear friend, Hubert Gillner lost his daughter, Marion Vasquez on Tuesday, December 21st at Vassar
Brothers Hospital. Marion is survived by her husband, Santos Vasquez, her daughter Isabella, her brother Roland
and his wife and children, and also her sister Evelyn and her husband Charles and children. We send you sincere
condolences Hubert, on the passing of your daughter. We also send you sincere condolences on the death of your
sister in Germany who died on New Year’s Eve. May this year find you and your family celebrating happier days.
Peter Nicolis, father of member Anthony (Tony) Nicolis and wife Mary, passed away on January 10th. Pete was also
survived by daughter Denise Seager and her husband Jon, daughter Lisa Ann Kirkpatrick and her husband Kerry,
and two grandchildren. Tony we extend to you and your family our sincerest condolences.
NOW FOR SOME GOOD NEWS!!!!!
It was a wonderful surprise to see Karl Berghofer back to join the singers for the Holiday visits and the Christmas
Mass at the First Lutheran Church. It was especially wonderful to see Karl and Margot at our New Year’s Party with
their special friends and enjoying this great evening with all of us. Karl is now back in Germany for his checkup, and
we wish him well once again.
New Year’s Eve brought another wonderful surprise to most of our members… to see upon entering the hall, our
Vice-President from several years ago, Wilfred Roehe and his lovely wife Patricia. If you didn’t know, Wilfred had a
very close call this past year, and spent most of his times in bed between hospitals and a very long recovery period at
The Lutheran Care Center and finally at home. Welcome back Wilfred! We hope to see you and Patti at more events
as your health will allow.

Happy 50th Birthday Joe Ulrich!
Joe and his friends and family were planning to gather at the January 7th
Germania Biergarten and it was unfortunately cancelled. We hope that Joe,
wherever he was that snowy night, had a wonderful birthday.
January 14, 2011: Dear Family and friends,
As some of you know already, Eddie has been suffering from severe back pain which we had thought was
sciatica or possibly a slipped disk. He had an MRI a week ago and the results came back "a large soft-tissue
cancerous tumor on his spine (L5S2) which has been causing the vertebrae to bulge and impinge on the
nerves, which is the source of his pain. He is having a CAT scan today, and we are going to Sloan-Kettering
next Thursday. We don't know what will happen after that (he's not scheduled at this time for admission, but I
think they may do that because he is having such difficulty sitting or lying down or walking). Please pray for him
and for us all. Thank you. When I know more, I will let you all know, and will be activating Caringbridge again at

Strauss Ball 2011 This elegant ball is going to be held on February 26, 2011 at The
Regency House, 140 State Route 23 North, Pompton, NJ. Attire is white tie, black tie or
Strauss Era Costume. Cocktail hour with hot and cold Hors d’oeuvres is from 7 to 8 pm
followed by a four course dinner. The famous Norbert Ludwig Orchestra plays from 8:15 pm
until 12:15 am with a wonderful repertoire of waltz, polka and mix of other favorite dancing
music. The price is $100 per person. Experience dancing the night away in elegant
costumes to the music of Johann Strauss, truly a step back in time; enjoy a delicious dinner
in regal atmosphere. The Regency House is offering an overnight stay for $89 including a full breakfast Sunday

CHORAL CORNER by Pat Kemmerer
The Men & Ladies Singers participated in the Weihnachtsmesse, a German Christmas
service, on Sunday, December 19th at the First Evangelical Lutheran Church on Mill Street
and thank everyone who attended. The turnout was great… over 165 people. Afterward there was
fellowship; the Kinderchor sang Christmas carols and everyone joined in. The ladies group from the
Church did a splendid job serving coffee, tea and cookies. It is truly a wonderful day where all the
clubs within Germania join and work together. Did you see the January 5th issue of the Southern
Dutchess News? A beautiful picture of the Kinderchor taken at the First Lutheran Church on
December 19th… they look like angels.
The singers went caroling to our homebound members of Germania Betty Zakal, George Lakatos,
Eleanor Qwik, Ursula Kruss and Oscar Fink. We sand and talked over old memories, it was wonderful
to see their smiles. On January 25th, 2011 Oscar Fink will be 96 years old, the oldest living member
of Germania! We wish him a great day with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
The Singers will be volunteering to work at the January 28th and February 25th Germania Friday
Dinners and are looking forward to seeing you. Please keep Saturday April 30th open for our Spring
Concert, it is earlier this year. More information will be in the Germania April Newsletter; please look
for flyers at the clubhouse and information on our website in a few weeks.

SCHUHPLATTLER NEWS. Germania Almrausch SV wishes you a Happy New
Year! We will be assisting Germania with the Biergarten gathering scheduled for March
4th, so we hope to see you there! We have resumed dance rehearsals and welcome you to
join us! The Kindergruppe (Children’s group) will practice at 7:30 followed by the adults at
8:30 on January 28, February 11 (tentative), February 25, March 11, April 1 (tentative), April 15, May
6, May 20, June 3 and June 17. Already we are anticipating a great time for families at the 18th annual
Mid-Atlantic Kinderfest being held June 4th at Germania Park, Conger St, Dover, NJ
(www.edelweisspassaic.com)! Germania Almrausch is wishing speedy recovery to Marion Bauer,
Evelyn Wuytack and Robert Rose: all three have had knee surgeries! Hmmm, Schuhplattler dancing

Time to retire your old hat? The soccer club has hats embroidered with the 1958
soccer club logo, price is $15. Contact Joe Ulrich or any soccer player you know
about getting one for yourself or a friend.
DER GEMUTLICHE TANZ VEREIN
Beginner Dance lessons started January 6th, 2011 and will be held every Thursday at 7:00
PM. Beginners will feel comfortable on the dance floor as they learn basic ballroom dances
and popular line dances; people looking to refresh their dance moves will also have a great
time. Everybody is welcome, any age or gender, and partners are not a requirement.
Joining our group is a great way to make new friends and enjoy die Gemuetlichkeit. We have a
signup sheet each night and make phone calls if we have to cancel unexpectedly. For more

CHRISTKINDLMARKT (Germania’s Christmas Market)
The Weekend of November 19th and 20th found many members, friends and guests enjoying themselves at our
annual CHRISKINDLMARKT with something new added this year… indoor and outdoor tents for everyone’s
shopping pleasures. Thanks to Helga Nowak- Razey and her helpers, she was successful in borrowing the tents
from member Father Peter Kihm of Mt. Carmel Church in the City of Poughkeepsie. We would like to thank
Father Peter, for without this donation our CHRISTKINDLMARKT would not have been as successful as it
was. Helga did an outstanding job calling upon outside vendors and trying to keep them all happy as well as
answering many questions and setting up the indoors and outside displays for those vendors. JOB WELL
DONE HELGA. Many thanks also goes to Thomas J. Mercer Jr., who once again did such a beautiful job
decorating the hall for our market and for the coming Christmas events held in Germania. Thomas, if you have
not personally been thanked, on behalf of all the oh’s and ah’s that members and their friends exclaimed over
your decorations a sincere thank you for an excellent job, well done. I would also like to thank Walter, Bruno,
Thomas, Gerhard, Helmut and the lady volunteers for baking and making all the goods to be sold. A special
thanks to Grete, who did quite a bit of the baking on her own. Thanks goes to Bobbie Gordon and her
waitresses who took care of serving the delicious food on both days, and Gisela and her bartenders who helped
to quench many a thirst as well as Lore Schoenfeld who made the refreshing Gluehwein to ward off some of the
cold, especially for our outside vendors. Grete and I would like to thank Robin and Gerhard Stoetzel who
manned the kitchen both days, with their helpers. Our gratitude goes to Monica Jorgensen for sharing in the
profits from the sale of her amber jewelry. (This is the third year that Monica has helped us out.) Also many
thanks to our committee and volunteers who not only attended all necessary meetings, but helped to promote
and worked wherever necessary during these two days. The Christkindlmarkt this year was the best ever, and
we look forward to our future one in 2011. Thanks again from chairladies Grete Licis and Janett Frank and cochairs Helga Nowak-Razey and Evelyn Blatz.
