T he h o tel was built o f sto ne laid up in what is called c o ncrete fo rm with walls
fr om o ne foo t t o tw o feet thick It was n o t intended as a fo rti fi cati o n n o r b uilt like
a fo rt any m o re than an y o rdin ary h o use I t had n o p o rt h o le s o r ri fl e e mb ra
sures I t was t o have been c o m pleted b y the fall o f 1 8 5 5 b ut the war diffi c ul
ties prevented its co mpleti o n till the ne x t spri ng I t was three sto ries high h e
sides a b asement under the wh ole and the si z e w as 5 0 feet b y 7 5 W ith such
a m ark Atchis o n co mmenced his cann o nade I saw hi m direct and elevate the
fi rst piece as engineer ; he st oo d near and gave the o rder t o fire T he guns
wer e six in all and ranged fro m six t o twelve p o unders T he light guns were
s o o n laid aside as n o ne b ut the largest w o uld penetrate the walls o f the bu ild
ing A fter fi ring nearl y an h o ur and finding they had onl y pierced it with a few
h o les and that the pr o cess w o uld n o t destro y it they ceased fi ring and put sev
era l kegs o f p o wder in the cellar and i gnited it w ith a fuz e saying the y w o ul d
bl o w the b uilding up T o their great surp rise this pro duced n o sh o ck and onl y
cracked a fe w wind o ws T he last res o rt was a general b urning b y setting fi re
t o t h e b eds and then the h o tel was s oo n in fl am es T his last o rder t o burn was
given b y D eputy Marshal Jo nes and b efo re night the struct ure cru m b led int o a
heap o f ruins
D uring these pro ceedings the citi z ens o f the t o wn were n o t present ; e x cept
perhaps h alf a d o z en all had m o ved o ut in the m o rning t o places o f safet y I
was o ne o f the few wh o did n o t leave and was c o nstantl y ob serv ing the m o ve
ments o f t h e mob W hile they were cann o nading t h e h o tel I was within speak
ing distance o f them and distinctly heard Atchis o n direct the p o inting o f the
fi rst gun which after all his engineering did n o t hit the b uilding

t o pro tect an d sustain its pe o ple against invasi o n and t o secure the m d o m esti c
tran quillity and the enj o y ment o f l ife and lib erty I t was under these circum
stances that the finest h o tel at that ti me b y far west o f S t Lo uis was de m ol
ish e d by a m ob led by United S tates m arshals ; and the l o ss was ver y severe
n o t al o ne t o t h e N e w England E migrant Aid C o mpany b ut t o Lawrence and the
wh o le T errit o ry as the in fl ux o f visito rs emigrants and set tlers int o the T erri
t o ry was very great and hundred s h ad t o c am p o ut shelter in h o uses n o t b eing
pro curable
