Supplies
D& F Designs - Design Your Own Craft Ornaments - 12 in a box - Clear or Frosted (found at
Hobby Lobby for $3.99) or any glass ornament approx 2 5/8” diameter
Krylon Spray Paint - (I like using the Gloss best. Krylon works best since it has almost no paint
spitting/drips.)
1 inch pompom - use 2 for muzzle
1/2 inch pompom - use 1 for chin
1/4 inch pompom - use 1 for nose
15 mm x 12 inch bump chenille pipe cleaner - use 1 for two ears
(Since colors are limited for bump chenille pipe cleaners, you may use regular 6mm x 12 inch
chenille pipe cleaners - use 1 per ear. See separate instruction, Making Ears for Cat Ornaments
using Regular Pipe Cleaners/Chenille Stems, for folding directions.)
White Presto Sticky-Back Felt (don’t get the stiffen felt) - cut 2 for eyes
Pink Felt - cut 1 for tongue
10 mm Sequins (I used the colors Lime & Light Blue) - use 2 for eyes
20 lb Test / .018 Dia. Monoflament Fishing Line or any size preferred - cut 3 for whiskers
You will need a pair of needle nose pliers.
Preparation
1. Paint Ornaments:
a. Remove the metal hanger cap from the ornament.
b. Place the ornament on a wooden dowel or something similar.
c. Hold the ornament by the wooden dowel and spray the paint lightly over the ornament. (You
probably will want to wear a glove to hold the ornament since there will be overspray.) Don’t
try to cover the ornament entirely with the first coat. Let dry several minutes between coats.
(I usually spray 2 to 3 coats. Do NOT spray too heavily or this will create paint runs which is
not easy to fix.)
d. After several coats of paint let the ornament dry for several hours. (I usually waited around 5
- 6 hours or overnight.)
e. While ornaments are drying, prepare rest of items.
2. Cut 3 pieces of fishing line approximately 5 inches.
3. Cut 1 tongue from pink felt approximately
1/4” W x 5/8” L with corners rounded off on one side.
4. Cut 2 eye backs from white sticky back felt. (Photo is not to
scale. You will have to draw a similar pattern piece. The
pattern is approximately 5/8” W x 1/2” T.)
5. Hot glue one sequin on each white sticky back felt piece.
6. Make Ears Using Bump Chenille Pipe Cleaner:
a. Cut 1 bump chenille pipe cleaner in two. This gives 2
bumps per piece.
b.
Fold each piece into a V shape.
c.
Now take one cut end and bend down to the center of
the V.
d.
Twist the wires together. (I first use my fingers but then
finish using the needle nose pliers to make sure no
sharp ends are exposed.)
e.
Repeat the process with the other end.
f.
Flatten the top of each teardrops until they resemble
triangles.
g.
Bend the center of the V even more together so the
triangles overlap partially.
h.
Slightly bend/cup the ears forward some.
Assembly
7. Hot glue the two 1 inch pompoms onto the painted ornaments. (I usually trim the pompoms some
once dried on the ornament.)
8. Hot glue the pink felt tongue to the bottom side where the two 1 inch pompoms meet.
9. Hot glue the one 1/2 inch pompom below the tongue. Place hot glue on the pompom & place on
painted ornament while pushing the 1/2 inch pompom & tongue up slightly into 1 inch pompom.
10. Hot glue the 3 whiskers in place. Place hot glue on the ornament & center the whiskers into the
glue. Spread the whiskers apart & hold in place until glue hardens.
11. Peel the paper back off the eyes & place on ornament.
12. Place hot glue along the wide bottom edge of one ear & place on ornament. Hold until dried.
Repeat for second ear.
Making Ears for Cat Ornaments Using Regular Pipe Cleaners / Chenille Stems
1. On your pipe cleaner, measure approx 1 5/8” to 1 3/4”
from one end and make your first fold.
2. Fold the long end of pipe cleaner up in front of short
end leaving approx 3/8” on the short end.
3. Fold the long end behind the short end. (You have now
created the first loop.)
4. Take the long end and insert into the loop made in
previous steps.
5. Pull the long end on thru the loop.
6. Bend the long end again making the bend at the same
length as the previous loop.
7. Again fold the long end in front of the short end to the
right of previous fold but right next to the previous fold.
8. Fold the long end behind the short end. (You have
created the second loop.)
9. Repeat Step 4.
10. Repeat Step 5.
See Step 5 Photo
11. Repeat Step 6.
12. Repeat Step 7.
13. Repeat Step 8. (You have created the third loop.)
14. Repeat Step 4.
See Step 7 Photo
15. Repeat Step 5.
16. Repeat Step 6.
17. Repeat Step 7.
See Step 7 Photo
18. Repeat Step 8. (You have created the fourth loop. If
you do not have enough pipe cleaner to complete the
fourth loop then I will undo the piece and make the first
loop a little shorter.)
19. Now you have the two sharp ends of the pipe cleaner at the top/point of the ear.
a. Fold the end on the right side to the front of ear.
b. Fold the other end to the back of ear.
20. Using needle nosed pliers, make sure the sharp ends
are bent down good.
21. If needed, you can pull the sides of the ear apart to
make it a little wider.
a. Cup the ear slightly from side to side
b. and from top to bottom.
