Bowling Night May 20
BOOM! BANG! DRIP! Period 2 students are adding Onomatopoeia to
their figurative language book. After including the definition of this new
term in their booklet, the students had to find examples online. Now that
the students know what onomatopoeia means, they will complete a few
activities in class to practice this concept. They will also begin learning a
new fluency poem, and guess what? It will include onomatopoeia! In
addition to learning this new concept, the students are always busy
reading. As Grace reads orally from her book, Leo, Gokul, Ben and Eli are
often found practicing their vocabulary words on Quizlet or completing an
activity to review skills like cause and effect or main idea. You will always
find Grace, Eli, Ben, Gokul, and Leo hard at work every day during Period
2. BAM! SNAP!
MRS. SCHENFELD’S CLASS NEWS
Congratulations to my period 2 and period 3 reading classes. These
students have completed the novels: Call It Courage and Trouble River. It
is evident by the students' enthusiasm how much they enjoyed reading
these books. As each chapter was read, Wil, Kevin, Daniel, David, Alex,
Jonathan, Shane and Marcus developed new vocabulary, wrote chapter
summaries, and answered comprehension questions. Awesome job
everyone!!!

MRS. WILSON’S MATH NEWS
I hope everyone enjoyed the Spring Break. We certainly enjoyed all the vacation stories--from the Grand
Canyon to Paris to San Francisco to right here in New Jersey! Our students and staff logged quite a few miles
during vacation week.
My eighth grade students have started to work on a banking program. They will be learning how to write a
check, use a debit card, and keep a checkbook register--all very important life skills as they approach the high
school years.

The Banyan School 2017 Science Fair will be held on May 18. Parents are invited to view the projects on that
day during school hours.
Two family science nights have been scheduled for tonight, April 26 and Wednesday, May 3 from
5 PM to 9 PM. These nights give your child an opportunity to complete their science projects. I will be here to
assist as needed. All students attending must be accompanied by an adult. Looking forward to a fantastic
science fair!!
MS. PRICE’S CLASS NEWS
My (period 1) FIRST class is working very diligently on the letters and sounds of the alphabet. We continue to
practice our vowels and consonants as a warm up. We continue to build cvc words that have a short a, i, o
words. Some of the students have added bonus letters and welded sounds to their magnetic boards. When
saying a word we sound out each letter and then practice writing the word. Kiera, Justin, and Dylan all really
enjoy building the words in their magnetic journals. We have also practiced writing on a communicator, sand
trays, the board, and with play-doh. I am so impressed with how well all three of my first period class are doing.
Keep up the great work!
MRS. BATTISTA-WELSH’S NEWS
We are starting a new lesson in Art during which the students will learning about the “pop-artist”, Wayne
Thiebaud. The children will learn about his love for food and the artistic style he used to paint popular items of
food such as: donuts, cupcakes, gumballs, and lollipops. Some of these items will be displayed for the children
to see first hand while they are engaged in the process of drawing them. This is a very “yummy” lesson, sure to
make the students hungry!
In Writing, the students are still working on their research paper about the state of New Jersey. The students
completed a writing prompt this week in which they discussed what they did over spring break. It was a lot of
fun to read about their different adventures.
