Dear Crafter/Food/Art and Community Vendor:
You are invited! The preparations for the Second Annual 2013 Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance
Festival and are under way and you are invited to join us. The Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance
Festival Committee, presented by the Anne Spencer House and Historic Garden Museums, Inc.,
will host a one-day event to be held this year on Saturday, September 07, 2013. This is the
Museum’s Second Annual event attracting over 300 people in our first year. This is your
invitation to participate in the 2013 Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance Festival held in
Lynchburg, Virginia, the home of the Harlem Renaissance poet, Anne Spencer. Live musicians,
artists, crafters, and fun games for the children will be on hand.
Registration fee for Crafters/ Food/Art Vendors is as follows:
$50.00 (Craft/Art) and $100.00 (Food) for a 15' wide by 10' deep space.
Registration fee for non-profits and community vendors is no charge for an 8’ by 8’ space.
(Space is limited so apply early.)
If you would like to participate as a Craft/Food/Art Vendor, please complete the
application/contract below and snail mail it to the Festival Committee. Complete and return it,
along with your FULL PAYMEMT to reserve your space. (Full Payment is required and
payment is Non-Refundable, Non-Transferable.) Checks should be made payable to the Anne
Spencer House and Garden Museum, Inc. Please mail payment with the completed application to
the Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance Festival Committee, c/o Anne Spencer House and Garden
Museum, 1313 Pierce Street, Lynchburg, VA 24501. THE DEADLINE FOR ALL VENDORS
IS on August 1, 2013. Applications and Payment MUST BE RECEIVED NO LATER

THAN THAT DATE. Space is allotted on a first-come, first-served basis. Submitting an
application and payment does not guarantee a space. Letters of Confirmation/Acceptance will be
mailed with receipts attached by August 15, 2013.
Set-up time for ALL CRAFT VENDORS will be Saturday morning, be on the street between
the 1300-1400 block of Pierce Street. The ART VENDORS will be located in the historic Anne
Spencer Garden located at 1313 Pierce Street. All vendors must arrive on September 7 th between
7:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. The Festival Committee will have volunteers on hand to direct you to
your location on Saturday. The Pierce Street Harlem Renaissance Festival will begin at 11:00
a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, September 07, 2013.
There is no rain date. This is a rain or shine event! Vendors are allowed a tent or canopy
umbrella within the space allotted.
No vehicles will be allowed in the garden or driveways. Artists and Craft exhibitors will need to
walk their items in/out of the designated festival areas before 9:00am or after 5:30 pm on the
day of the festival.

Event Schedule
Harlem Renaissance Festival will be held on Pierce Street between thirteenth and Fourteenth Streets. The Art Show
will be held in the Spencer Historic Garden.
(Admission to the festival is $5.00 per adult and children (up to 12) are free. The Festival is open to the public.
Donations are always accepted.)
9:00 – 11:00 am (Break from the Main Stage) to attend the Dedication Ceremony of C.W.Seay Virginia Historical
Marker. Placement of the Virginia Highway Marker are provided by the Department of Historic Resources. The
ceremony will be held at 1300 Pierce Street.
11:00 am -5:00 pm Craft, Food, Art and FUN! Game booths open.
Art booths will open in the Anne Spencer Garden.
At the Main Stage
11:00 – 11:45 am Opening Ceremony

12 noon – 1:45 pm Cotton Club Entertainment Stage opens.
Live Music, Song, and Dance. This stage will be dedicated to Harlem’s Cotton Club.
The Cotton Club was a famous jazz music night club located in the Harlem neighborhood
of New York City which operated from 1923 to 1940, most notably during America's
Prohibition Era lasting from 1919 to 1933. The club was a white-only establishment even
though it featured many of the greatest African American entertainers of the era including
Fletcher Henderson, Duke Ellington, Adelaide Hall, Count Basie, Bessie Smith, Cab
Calloway, The Nicholas Brothers, Lottie Gee, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, Louis
Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Nat King Cole, Billie Holiday, and Ethel Waters. During its
heyday, the Cotton Club served as a hip meeting spot featuring regular "Celebrity Nights"
on Sundays which featured celebrity guests such as Jimmy Durante, George Gershwin,
Sophie Tucker, Paul Robeson, Al Jolson, Mae West , Richard Rodgers, Irving Berlin, Eddie
Cantor, Fanny Brice, Langston Hughes, Judy Garland, Moss Hart, and New York City
Mayor Jimmy Walker , among others.
2:15 pm -3:45 pm Gospel Show. Wayside Baptist Church
Live Gospel music will be performed from area church groups and gospel singers.
