NEWSLETTER June 2015 LETTER 11 Dear Parents and Carers, As we approach the excitement of our transition day I wanted to share with you the ways we have been preparing for next year. We are saying farewell to some staff: Miss Binns is off to teach in Dulwich College, South Korea; Miss Moore has been offered a promotion and will be teaching at Woodlea School; Mrs Enston is going to train to be a secondary school English teacher and Mrs Leeves is taking up a more senior post at Moorhouse School. Two other teachers are moving on to new adventures – so we will be saying goodbye to Mrs Kelly and Mrs Dyja. Needless to say they will all be sorely missed – and I cannot find the words to thank them all fully enough for everything they have given to our school. I have been busy recruiting fresh blood into the St Mary’s team and we will be welcoming Mr Nguyen, Mr Heyburn, Mr Sweeting and Mrs O’Neill in September. They will all be here on the transition day on 30 th June – except Mrs O’Neill who lives in Canada and will be moving over here at the end of July but will be with her class via Skype! Two members of staff have been promoted. Miss Hill is now a year leader and Miss Wylie is our new SENDCO (and will be sharing a class with Mrs Wallace, who will be year 3 leader and taking on other leadership responsibilities across the school as well. Maia Whitmore & Jessica Quick Mrs Tozer’s and Mrs Walter’s ‘Goodbye Do’ Thursday 16th July 2015 2.00-3.15pm Downs Way School Hall Please join us for a cup of tea, a piece of cake and a chance to say goodbye Year 3 Romans Play in a Day Year 5 Victorians Play in a Day Year 3 Trip to Nower Wood Year 3 visited Nower Wood, Surrey Wildlife Centre earlier in the month. They enjoyed activities which taught them about soil and plants. In 'Soil Scientists' we learnt about different types of soils and tested different soils in different areas to identify the type of soil. In 'Plant Detectives' we learnt to identify a range of trees by looking at their leaves and then had to go on a treasure hunt. 3W had a particularly exciting trip as their coach broke down on the M25. The children were beautifully behaved and Verity Coughlan who had to go with 3W as she was away when her class went said "This is the best trip ever! I am very glad I got to go with 3W as I saw the fire brigade!" Well done Year 3, you were great as always and showed St Mary's spirit! Miss Wylie Thank you so much to everyone who sponsored Phillip and Zach. As you can see from the photo they completed the 5km run on a very hot day, in fact they did it in a very creditable 25 minutes. So far they have raised £1,106.88 from the run and this combined with the money Phillip raised from a mile long swim takes his total to £1,515.25 which is well in excess of his annual target for Great Ormond Street Hospital. Many congratulations to Frankie Fisher for being selected to play Tennis for the Kent team in the Aegon County Cup in August. Alison Langham Year 5/6 Cricket Club trip to The Oval Once again St. Mary's were invited by Surrey Cricket to spend a day at The Kia Oval to watch a county championship game and experience their annual school's day on 2nd June. Everyone who signed up for cricket club this year was invited to attend, and we were lucky to dodge the large raincloud which was looming over Oxted that day. We even managed a small bit of sunshine. For much of the day we were joined by our friends (and many ex- St. Mary's cricket club members!) from Oxted School. We got to watch some excellent cricket, meet the players and get some autographs. A great day was had by all! Year 5 cricket club member Matthew Cowley (5G) had another visit to The Oval on Friday 5th June where he was the mascot for the T20 game against Essex. Matthew won a competition which meant he performed the toss at the beginning of the match in front of a crowd which was in excess of 20,000! Matthew did Surrey proud by winning the toss, but sadly Surrey ended up losing the game. Matthew also got to meet the players and got his bat signed. What a week of cricket! Mrs Wallace Hardball Cricket at Grub Street On Wednesday, 10th June St. Mary's Year 6 hardball cricket team played against Banstead Juniors in round 1 of the Connellan Trophy competition. We hosted at Grub Street Cricket ground on a grey morning with high winds. St. Mary's lost the toss so went to bat first. Conor and Will opened proceedings before Conor was bowled in the 2nd over. Charlie took over and had an impressive go before finally being bowled after he scored 24 runs. St. Mary's finished the innings on 48 runs. Banstead were an incredible team, and despite Will Mullen bowling their first batsman out for a diamond duck we just couldn't keep their runs down. They ended up finishing on a very impressive 91 runs. Our thanks go to Bernie Mullen from Oxted and Limpsfield Cricket Club for umpiring the match and also to OLCC for letting us use their ground and clubhouse. The players were: Max Fackrell Spinks (c), Charlie Fisher, Will Mullen, Jonathan MacTavish, Jonah Rumsey, Conor Greer and Beau Fackrell Spinks Mrs Wallace Girls Kwik Cricket On Wednesday, 17th June St Mary’s Girls Kwik Cricket Team went to Epsom College to compete in a county tournament. All our competition looked tough, but we were ready to go. Rosie, our captain won the first toss. We were fielding first. First to bowl was Millie. They were strong bowls and they only got a few runs. Zara’s bowling was also very accurate and as a result she got 2 people out and also threw the ball at the wicket to get another person out in one over. Although our team was playing well we lost by 13 runs. Now our team was all warmed up for our next match, but unfortunately we lost the toss so we were batting first. The oppositions bowling was strong, but not strong enough for us. When we swapped Rosie did 2 excellent bowls and got 2 people out in a row and we were very proud, At the end of the game, Steven announced that we had won! The final game came upon us and they were our toughest competition of the day and we were fielding first. They were a good team and were hitting 4’s and 6’s. Then out of nowhere Hannah bowled a superb ball and caught it fantastically on her knees. Next to bowl was Rosie and unfortunately she didn’t have a good start, but then gave Anna a chance to catch the ball single handed and then gave Lois a chance and she leapt into the air and caught the ball astonishingly. Then Rosie bowled someone out on her last ball. We won with a total of 282 runs. We were the champions of Group E. We had the chance to play at the Oval, but unfortunately we cant go because of Bowles week. Rosie Weight ©, Zara Taylor (vice-captain), Anna Sebire, Millie Howgate, Hannah Evans, Lois Clark, Poppy Erwood, Olivia Taylor and Rachel Budd. Thank you to Mrs Wallace for coaching us and screaming for us to run! Boy’s Kwik Cricket On Wednesday, 17th June the boys Kwik Cricket Team went to play at Epsom college in a county tournament. The first match was tough, but we tried our best and got five wickets. We didn’t do so well on our batting and conceded 4 wickets, but still lost the match. The second match we struggled, but continued to play and got a few wickets. The team we were against were strong at fielding and put a lot of pressure on us. In the end we lost by 10 runs! After two defeats we thought it was all over, but we ended up getting through to the ‘Plate Competition’ and went straight to the pitch we were playing on. Our group for the plate was good and we knew we needed to win to go to the final. So we played out best and when we got to the last match of the group, we needed to win! We got 2 amazing catches from Will and Charlie and when we batted we hit lots of 6’s and 4’s. We ended up beating them by 25 runs. When we got to the final we did a toss-up and they won it, but surprisingly they wanted to bat first. They were good batsmen as they hit lot of 4’s and 6’s, but we got only a few wickets. They did amazing and hit 264 runs. Then it was time for us to bat. We stepped up feeling confident; in our first 2 pairs we hit 234 runs, and it was now down to the last 2 pairs. Ben and Conor got us into the lead leaving Will and Charlie to play it safe. We ended up winning with a total of 274 runs and it meant we had won the plate! Conor Greer ©, Will Mullen (vice-captain), Ben Hasler, Charlie Fisher, Seb Royce, Jonah Runsey, Joe Davies, Max and Beau Fackrell Spinks A big thank you to Mrs Wallace for organising the tournament and cheering us on.
