10th World Literature
Macbeth Motif Project
Motif is a recurring idea or element in literature that often helps us better determine the theme
and gain a deeper understanding of the literature. You will be researching a motif from Macbeth
using the text and various other outside sources as support for your ideas. You will create a
poster that will incorporate all the necessary research skills, such as paraphrasing, summarizing
and directly quoting significant ideas. You will cite you sources within the poster and provide a
Works Cited page that follows MLA (Modern Language Association) format.
Motif Choices
Disorder in Nature
Appearances and Deceit
Light and Darkness
Sleep and Sleeplessness
The Supernatural
Blood
Courage and Cowardice
Task
As we read the play, pay special attention to the way your motif is presented. Use post-it notes to
annotate the lines and page numbers where it is mentioned and write your ideas for the motif’s
meaning.
This is NOT a group project. You will be working individually. Aside from Media Center
research days this project will be completed outside of class. After you choose your topic begin
to consider how your motif is used in the play and how you can create a visual representation of
it on your poster.
Poster
Your poster must show proof of mastery of the following skills:
· Summarizing
· Paraphrasing
· Direct Quotation (with accompanying explanation)
· In-text citation
· Works Cited page (attached to the back of your poster)
Your poster must also:
· Include a Title (this can be your chosen motif)
· Include the title of the play and the author
· Include several interesting and clear examples of motif (3-5)
· Include relevant and interesting graphics presented in a neatly well-organized fashion
· Be constructed on a full size poster board (color/shape is up to you, be creative!)
· Be free from spelling and grammatical errors
