ART! Learn about painting, sculpture, performance. Why do artists do what they do? How do viewers participate in constructing the meaning of an artwork? ARCHITECTURE! Explore the history of modern architecture. Chicago has been on the cutting edge of architecture from the birth of the skyscraper. How do architects shape space? Does form really follow function? CITY! All this happens in the dynamic urban environment that is Chicago. We will go to the beach, the theatre, and the top of skyscrapers. Dates: Full Course: May 22-June 9 In Chicago: May 24-June 5 Highlights: All the big art museums, three architecture walking tours, a boat tour, the observation deck of the Sears/Willis Tower, Frank Lloyd Wright’s Robie House, Millennium Park, the Pilsen murals. And because we're in Chicago: a taste of Chicago theatre, Chicago-style hot dogs, deep dish pizza, and maybe a Cubs game at historic Wrigley Field. Requirements: Meetings — two or three pre-trip meetings in Spring 2017, to be scheduled at a later date Assignments —individual presentations to the group in Chicago, journal entries on each of the museums/tours, and a critical essay due by email on June 9 Cost: $2,100 Early Bird Special: Students who are timely with their payments and completion of paperwork will receive a $100 credit. To qualify for the special, a student must make all payments on time and meet all other deadlines set by Off-Campus Programs in a punctual manner.
