You are urged to consider your children’s choices carefully in order to assure them the maximum benefit from the available opportunities. All junior high school students will experience an orientation program in the classroom. Counselors will be available both in the classroom and in their offices for individual conferences to answer questions concerning registration. TO THE STUDENT: You are being asked to make some very important decisions regarding your academic program through course selections for the 2016-2017 school year. This guide provides the course descriptions and other important information you need to make careful and mature choices. Review the course offerings with your parents, teachers, and counselors before making your decisions. Read the course descriptions carefully. Be sure you meet the prerequisites and have teacher approval before you sign up for a course. SCHEDULE CHANGES: Make your registration choices wisely, and be sure to list two alternate elective courses in case other classes are closed or in conflict. If any course does not have the minimum students registered, it may be dropped. Final decisions will be made on an individual course basis by the administration. Course descriptions on the following pages list the course name, course number, grade level, length of course (semester or year), course credits (0.5 or 1.0), and if the course is an elective or a required course. Courses offering 0.5 credits meet for one semester. Courses offering 1.0 credit meet both semesters. All courses are graded and credit is earned on a semester bases. Students will be given the opportunity to learn a variety of different topics including; Defining Agriculture, History of Agriculture, Introduction to the FFA, Agriculture Technology and Production, Animal Production – Industry & Terminology, Plant Production – Industry & Terminology, Public Speaking & Presentation Skills, Agricultural Issues, Agricultural Advocacy, Agricultural Mechanics, and Agricultural Careers. Upon completion of this course students will have a solid foundation of Agricultural Education and will have increased their knowledge in Agriculture, Science, and more. Students will have the opportunity to participate in all FFA activities. This is a good foundation course for the Agriculture I course they can take as freshman. ART 6157 ART I – Grades 6, 7 and 8 Semester (0.5) Elective An introductory course to expose students to a variety of 2D and 3D mediums and techniques. This is a semester elective course for any beginning art student who has not had an art class. This course will focus on the elements and principals of art, creative expression, aesthetic perception, historical and cultural context, and artistic connections. Some mediums that may be explored are drawing, colored pencil, acrylic painting, chalk pastel, printmaking, and clay. 6159 ART IIA - Grades 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Art I or Teacher Approval Art 2D I is a course designed for students who have completed ART I and have an interest in further developing their two dimensional art skills. This course will expand on the elements and principals of art, creative expression, aesthetic perception, historical and cultural context, and artistic connections that were focused on in Art I. This course will further develop drawing, painting, and other 2D skills. This course will expand on the elements and principals of art, creative expression, aesthetic perception, historical and cultural context, and artistic connections that were focused on in Art I. This course will further develop these concepts and ideas while focusing and sculptural forms of work. Mediums that may be explored are, ceramics, plaster, paper mache, wire, soft sculpture, and other 3D materials. 6152 ART IIIB – Grades 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Art IIIA or Teacher Approval. Art IIIB is a course designed for students who have completed Art IIIA. This course is for the serious art student and will focus on three-dimensional projects. We will continue to apply the principles and elements of design, art history and culture, critique process, creative expression, artistic connections, and art production. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 6 6451 CRAFTS - Grades 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective The focus of this class is about crafting a finished project, many of which are multi-cultural, using a variety of forms, materials, and tools. We will be using the basic elements and principles of art to design each project. Projects may include but are not limited to, textiles, batik, personal posters, shrink art, knotted bracelets and necklaces, bead making, paper mache, Day of the Dead skeletons, cartooning, candle making, mosaics, crocheting, salt dough projects, and others as time permits. 6453 GRAPHIC DESIGN - Grades 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective This is a beginning technology-based course which will focus on the integration of art, digital photography, commercial design, and computer graphics to create both artistic media projects and computer generated images. This class will teach students to use and incorporate digital photography in their designs using digital cameras, computers, card readers and printers. Students will explore professional quality programs such as Adobe Photoshop to manipulate their photographs, and Adobe Illustrator to produce and manipulate vector graphics. This course maintains a heavy emphasis on the elements and principles of art and design which are incorporated into every project. 6629 Publications Photo (Yearbook) Grade 8 Year Long (1.0) Elective This is an advanced technology-based course for 8th grade students. This course will focus on the use of photography and field journalism in order to compose the school’s yearbook. Students will use Photoshop and a software suite provided by our publication company to edit and publish a final product. This is a very independent course! Students will be responsible for attending and documenting extracurricular events for LJHS, composing calendars, conducting interviews, cataloging the entire LJHS student body, editing photos and articles, conducting sales events, creating advertising materials, managing large sums of money, and maintaining constant communication with their classmates, peers, and faculty throughout the school. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 7 BUSINESS 5281 COMPUTER PERSPECTIVES – Grades 6, 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective During this 20 week course students will focus on basic computer skills and responsible computer use. Students will develop a basic understanding of Internet safety, ethical computer use, keyboarding, opening and closing software files, accessing and saving to the school server, copying and pasting files or text, copyright laws, and searching the Internet. This course will cover basic and intermediate skills and shortcuts using, but not limited to the, Microsoft Office365, Mac OS, Android OS, and Sphero Robotics. This class will not be limited to the use of computers. We will explore digital cameras, video and other peripheral tools as well. Students will engage in building a computer from start to finish. Students will also engage in programing a Raspberry Pi into a mobile gaming system. This entire course however in underneath an umbrella of digital citizenship. 5756 INTRODUCTION TO BUSINESS ECONOMICS – Grade 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective This is a great introduction to the world of business and how it relates to our more globalized world. This basic business course is designed to acquaint students with the major activities associated with a business. Students will gather a basic understanding of general business, economics, entrepreneurship, and business communications, government’s role in business, and consumer rights and responsibilities. Student will hear from community businesses in special interview sessions. Student will also work on investment opportunities, through our stock market simulation. Students will also work inside of our school store. Career exploration will also be emphasized in this course. Overall, the course gives students a broad exposure to business operations in and across all economic zones of the world. The class will focus on introducing the French language and cultures while building the skills necessary for learning a world language. Students will explore the French-speaking cultures through their geography, songs, greetings, holidays, celebrations and more. They will also begin to learn common vocabulary such as colors, numbers, dates, classroom objects, and words needed for the cultural components. Students are encouraged to take one or more exploratory classes depending on their interests, or to help them choose a language to study in Level 1. 4111 FRENCH 1 – Grades 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective This is a high-school-equivalent Hathaway-qualifying class. Prerequisite: French Exploratory is recommended but NOT required. Emphasis will be placed on acquiring vocabulary on a variety of topics based on the ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) Proficiency Guidelines. Students will be provided many different opportunities to practice, build, and demonstrate mastery of acquired vocabulary and communicative functions. The class will focus on introducing the Spanish language and cultures while building the skills necessary for learning a world language. Students will explore the Spanish-speaking cultures through their geography, songs, greetings, holidays, celebrations and more. They will also begin to learn common vocabulary such as colors, numbers, dates, classroom objects, and words needed for the cultural components. Spanish 2 courses build upon skills developed in Spanish 1, extending students’ ability to understand and express themselves in Spanish and increasing their vocabulary. Students usually explore the customs, history and art forms of Spanish-speaking people to deepen their understanding of the Spanish-speaking cultures. 4513 SPANISH 3 – Grade 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective Prerequisite: Must have passed Spanish 2 with a C or better. This is a high-school-equivalent Hathaway-qualifying class. This course is designed to help the language student to further develop communicative proficiency in the areas of interpersonal speaking, interpretative reading, interpretative listening, presentational speaking and presentational writing. Thematic areas of study may include: the same themes as in Level 1 & 2 plus the personal relationships, arts, health, occupations, professions, transportation, travel/vacations, and other cultural topics. The course helps students develop pre-employment and survival skills that will be needed to function as an independent individual in the family, community and work environment. Wyoming standards for both Career/Vocational Education and Health are taught in the following areas: 1) Foods, Nutrition and Healthy Lifestyles: healthy eating guides, quick and healthy food preparation techniques, cooperative work in groups, food preparation safety and sanitation practices in living and work environments, prevention of use/abuse of chemical substances, and responsible decision-making; 2) Adolescent Development: developing a healthy self-esteem, interpersonal relationships and peer pressure, gender roles, human sexuality and reproduction, and communication skills; 3) School to Work: care of children 0-9 years, employer/employee relationships and responsibilities, safety/first aid, and a sewing lab. 7123 LIFE SKILLS II – Grade 8 Semester (0 .5) Elective Life Skills II expands the studies of the Wyoming Career/Vocational Education Standards begun in seventh grade in the following areas: 1) Nutrition and Foods: food preparation techniques, healthy lifestyles and nutrition, safety and sanitation, preventing food borne illness, use and care of equipment, cooperative work in groups, principles of healthy food preparation and storage. 2) Adolescent Development: interpersonal skills, family and societal responsibilities, understanding individual differences, developing positive relationships, communicating effectively, and resolving conflict in an acceptable manner; personal financial management and career exploration. 3) Sewing Lab Emphasis in this course is on student participation and hands on learning activities. 7140 CAREER PLANNING AND PREPARATION - Grade 8 Semester (0.5) Elective This semester course is offered to students who are interested in exploring career possibilities. The following topics will be addressed: skills and work value assessments based on interest, study of career clusters, occupation research (including guest speakers and field trips), educational preparation needed for careers of interest, job seeking skills, and job skills (including interpersonal relationships, teamwork, problem-solving, and changing jobs). This course will enable students to prepare their individual education and career plan as well as identify and develop employment skills. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 13 7162 COOKING AND NUTRITION – Grade 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Cooking and Nutrition is a semester course that is designed for students who wish to study food preparation and nutrition at an intermediate level. If you love to bake and cook this is the class for you! Units of study are reinforced with hands on food preparation labs that include: food preparation techniques, use and care of equipment, small appliance use, menu planning, foods from other cultures, microwave cookery, cake decorating, cost comparison, cooperative work in groups, food service, safety and sanitation, nutrition and food labels. Emphasis in this course is on student participation, hands on learning activities, and successful demonstration of the Wyoming Career/Vocational Education Standards. INDUSTRIAL ARTS 7461 Introduction to Industrial Arts - Grade 6 Semester (0.5) Elective Intro to Industrial Arts is a class that will explore many different areas in Industrial Arts. Units vary from: Computer Aided Drafting, Woodworking, Robotics, Electronics, Hydraulics, Flight and Rocketry. There will be units that we will complete as a large group along with individual or small group work. If you like learning and building items, this is the class for you. Cost of Materials is required for this course. 7457 INDUSTRIAL ARTS I – Grade 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Industrial Arts I consists of three areas of instruction: Introduction to Drafting Technology, Woodworking Technology and Metalworking Technology. Students will be introduced to and required to safely and properly operate many different power and hand tools both in woodworking and metalworking. Students will be building small projects. Cost of Materials is required for this course. 7649 Woodworking Technology IA – Grade 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Industrial Arts I or teacher approval Students will learn to properly and safely use the following power machines: surface planer, drill press, scroll saw, router, lathe, band saw, and sanders. They will complete several small projects using these machines as well as learning several finishing processes. Cost of Materials is required for this course. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 14 7659 Woodworking Technology IB – Grade 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Woodworking Technology IA or teacher approval Students will be introduced to and required to safely and properly operate the jointer, radial arm saw and table saw. Students will complete projects using those machines. Following completion of the required projects, they will have the opportunity to select one major project that they will complete the last quarter of the year. Cost of Materials is required for this course. 7759 Metalworking Technology – Grade 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Industrial Arts I or teacher approval This course consists of basic arc welding, gas welding, and foundry techniques. Students in this class will have the opportunity to develop an understanding of these areas by practice on individual machines. Also included will be introductory units in the use of Plasma cutting, MIG welding and metal bending. Cost of Materials is required for this course. LANGUAGE ARTS 6GRLA101 English 6 Grade 6 Full Year (2.0) Required This course will integrate reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills. Emphasis will be on reading and analyzing a variety of informational and literary works. Writing instruction will focus on two forms of expository writing as well as narrative writing. Students will continue to develop the English Language Arts skills outlined in the 6th grade Common Core State Standards. L121 Honors English 6 Grade 6 Full Year (2.0) Required Honors English is for academically advanced students in Language Arts in 6th grade. Academic skills, in addition to the regular English curriculum, will include creative enrichment through writing, critical and logical thinking, research techniques, and report writing skills. This course also exposes the students to a wide variety of literary types, encourages the enjoyment of literature, and promotes an appreciation of the different genres. 0028 ENGLISH 8 - Grade 8 Full Year (1.0) Required The skills presented in seventh-grade English are reinforced and expanded with an attempt on mastery. Emphasis is on library skills, reading, writing, grammar, speaking, and listening. Students are exposed to a variety of literature in which communication skills are emphasized. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 16 0347 GREAT CLASSICS/GREAT FILMS - Grades 7, 8 Semester (0.5 ) Elective Great Classics/Great Films is a semester elective offered to seventh and eighth grade students who like to read and write. Students will read classic literature, watch those videos, and write in relationship to the novels and the films. 0351 CREATIVE WRITING - Grades 7, 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Creative Writing is an elective offered to students in grades 7, 8 and 9. Projects include work in different styles and forms of writing with emphasis on development of ideas, organization, mechanics, vocabulary improvement, and language usage. 0352 CREATIVE WRITING ADVANCED – Grades 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Creative Writing This course is an elective offered to students who have completed a creative writing course. Independent writing projects are emphasized as students continue to improve writing skills. MATHEMATICS 6GRMA101 Math 6 – Grade 6 Full Year (2.0) Required In Math 6 students focus on making connections, discovering relationships, and figuring out what strategies to use in solving problems. These strategies will be used to solve problems involving portions, integers, variables, ratios, multiplying fractions, area, dividing, building expressions, rates, statistics, equations, volume, and percents. 1127 MATH 7 - Grade 7 Full Year (1.0) Math 7 focuses on operations with integers, simplifying and expanding algebraic expressions, solving algebraic equations and inequalities, recognizing and solving direct and indirect proportions, working with angle properties, straight lines, and constructions, finding surface area and volume of two and three dimensional shapes, statistics, and probability. This course is designed for most all 7th grade students. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 17 1228 Math 8 – Grade 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Math 8 is a year-long course that will cover a variety of Algebra topics including: Exponents, Scientific Notation, Linear Equations (Solving and Graphing), Systems of Equations, Functions, Statistics, and Probability. Math 8 will also cover a variety of Geometry topics including: The Pythagorean Theorem, Geometric Transformations, Congruence and Similarity, and Volume and Surface Area of Non-rectangular solids. Any 7th grader registering for this course must be recommended by their 6 th grade teacher and must be an accelerated math student with the ability to maintain a grade no lower than a “B”. Any 7th grader in Math 8 with a “C” must repeat the course the following year. 1211 Algebra 1 – Grade 8 Full Year (1.0) Prerequisite: “A or B” in Math 8 as a 7th Grader Algebra 1 is a yearlong course which will review, at a higher and more rigorous level, those topics covered in Math 8 (the coordinate plane, solving multi-step equations, ratio and proportions, linear equations, linear systems, exponentials and exponential relationships, statistics and probability, functions, and inequalities—among other things). This course will also introduce and explore the topics of systems of linear inequalities, quadratics, and higher degree polynomials. . 90110 Math Lab – Grades 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Math Lab is required for 7th and 8th grade students who received a “D” or “F” in their previous math class. These students will maintain concurrent enrollment in a regular math class. This class will focus not only on remediation of math skills but also pre-teach topics in the student’s regular math class. Additional materials/activities could be comprised of: 1) further study of guitar, 2) additional music theory discussion and exercises, 3) further study and listening to other types of music, 4), instrument production and (5) participation in concerts/recitals (possible). 6720 BEGINNING BAND - Grades 6, 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective This is an introductory course for students who wish to learn a traditional band instrument (woodwinds, brass, and percussion). Students will develop musical skills and will present them in public performances in groups and as individuals. Students will need to purchase books and accessories, but the school does have a limited inventory of instruments for students who cannot afford to purchase or rent their own instrument. 90086 BEGINNING BAND I - Grades 6, 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective This course is for the continuation of skills learned in either Beginning Band 1 at LJHS or in 5th Grade Band (Elementary Beginning Band). Students should already have successfully played at least to the midpoint of the Essential Elements Book 1, Standard of Excellence Book 1, or similar band method book. Enrollment is based upon the recommendation of the director through auditions or promotion from Beginning Band or the Laramie Elementary Band Program. The course stresses development of technical ability. Parade marching skills are introduced at this level. (Membership in this band does not guarantee automatic promotion to the Cadet Band.) Enrollment in this group is based upon the recommendation of the director through auditions or promotion from the Beginning or Intermediate Band. Course content is based upon furthering the students’ technical abilities and musical knowledge in a larger band than prior experience has allowed. Cadet Band will begin with Book III, which they are required to purchase. Parade marching skills will be continued. 6726 VARSITY BAND – Grade 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective Prerequisite: Teacher Approval This is a select performing group of students recommended by the director for membership. Admission is granted by audition or director’s recommendation. The intent of the course is to expose each student to the finest band literature available for this age group, thereby expanding technical ability, musicianship, and musical knowledge. At this level, parade marching skills continue to be refined. Students will continue to work out of Book III. 6921 JAZZ BAND – Grades 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective Prerequisite: Teacher Approval This ensemble is open to students who play appropriate instruments or are capable of “doubling” on an instrument utilized in the standard jazz ensemble. Admittance to this group is attained by meeting the criteria through audition and/or the consent of the director; therefore, students must see the director before final registration for the class. Emphasis in the course is on the development of basic jazz techniques and styles through the performance of the many facets of jazz (i.e., jazz-rock, swing, blues, etc.). Basic theory principles, which pertain to the structure of jazz music and improvisation, will be introduced as regular class work. Some school instruments are available for students’ use. One year of successful study in this class prepares the student for one of the more advanced orchestras. Students who have not completed a full year of orchestra must take this class before advancing to other orchestra classes. Students are required to purchase two method books, rosin, and other materials needed for their particular instruments. 6822 INTERMEDIATE ORCHESTRA - Grades 7, 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective Prerequisite: Teacher Approval This course is open to students who have successfully completed a minimum of one to two years of class or private lessons on violin, viola, cello, or string bass. Class instruction begins with a thorough review and continuation of skills introduced at the beginning level. Junior high level bowing techniques, higher positions, vibrato, and music theory are introduced. The Intermediate Orchestra will perform in at least five concerts during the year. All students are expected to perform in the concerts scheduled throughout the year. Membership in Intermediate Orchestra does not guarantee automatic promotion to the Concert Orchestra. One pianist will be accepted as accompanist with the consent of the director. The Concert Orchestra will perform in at least five concerts during the year, including the junior high music festival. Areas of study will include the following: topographical features, location, map skills, early civilizations, political divisions and subdivisions of the world, current global affairs, Wyoming and the five themes of geography. 3128 AMERICAN HISTORY - Grade 8 Full Year (1.0) Required This course revolves around an in-depth study of five major themes through which the American experience of the past and present are viewed. Themes examined include Exploration, Community, Expansion, Conflict, and Technology. Pre-Columbian America through the Civil War is the time frame covered. LJHS 2016-2017 Curriculum 12/01/15 Page 25 OTHER CREDIT AND NON-CREDIT COURSES 9922 P.A.V.E. - Grades 8 Semester (0.5) Elective Prerequisite: Application and Interview Peers are Vital in Education (P.A.V.E.) is a course that gives students the opportunity to work as a Peer Tutor with students who have learning differences. The course will provide students with the knowledge of different disabilities, tutoring techniques, setting goals, building friendships and social interactions. Peer Tutors will assist with basic skills in academics, socialization and life skills. Acceptance into the course will require an interview and teacher approval. Satisfactory (S) and unsatisfactory (U) grades will be given for this course. These grades will not be averaged into the GPA. 3010 STUDENT GOVERNMENT - Grades 8 Full Year (1.0) Elective Prerequisite: Application and Interview The overall goal for this course is to enhance leadership abilities in the students of Laramie Junior High School. The major objectives are to increase student involvement in site-based management, improve the school climate, and give practical experience in communication, organization, implementation of ideas, goal setting and working with others. This class will be reserved for WEB Leaders (8th grade only). WEB Leaders are 8th graders who are role models for younger students and who have been successful at Laramie Junior High School. WEB Leaders' communication skills, leadership potential, responsibility, and personality have helped them succeed in the junior high environment and lessons they have learned will be shared to help others succeed.
