Prevention and Art
Call to Artists
Stony Brook University
Center for Prevention and Outreach
Student Activity Center, Room 310
Date of Exhibition: November 17, 2016
Deadline for Submissions: November 11, 2016
The Center for Prevention and Outreach (CPO) is pleased to issue a Call to Artists to appear in an
exhibition highlighting substance abuse, addiction, sexual violence and recovery.
Substance abuse and sexual violence are the two leading public health crises sweeping across
college campuses. The purpose of this exhibit is to contribute to the concept that creativity and artistic
expression can play a significant role both in recovery and in raising awareness of the personal and
community tolls caused by substance abuse, addiction and sexual violence. Artwork can give insights
into the human experience of addiction or sexual violence, can spark dialogs, can teach, and can change
perceptions.
Artists are invited to submit original artworks on the theme of drug addiction (drugs include
alcohol, tobacco, illegal or prescription drugs), sexual violence (harassment, dating abuse, assault, rape),
and recovery from addiction or sexual trauma. The jurors for the exhibition will be Smita Majumdar Das,
Assistant Director of CPO; Lara Hunter, Director of Alcohol and Drug Services; Christine Szaraz,
Prevention and Outreach Counselor; Samantha Winter, Complainant Navigator; Kerri Mahoney, Alcohol
and Other Drug Outreach Specialist. Final decision on 1st, 2nd and 3rd place art pieces will be determined
by attendees at opening reception.
