Kindergarten Newsletter Friday, February 3rd, 2017 Reminder: Valentine’s Day In case you want to get started on your Valentine’s Day cards early, a class list is attached in this newsletter email. Remember, you can always visit our classroom webpage to find pertinent classroom information as well. In order to adhere to district guidelines, please do not send food or candy in with valentines. However, a special trinket such as a pencil, eraser, or sticker is acceptable. Encourage your child to write some or even all of their valentines! Classroom Items Needed: Clorox Disinfectant Wipes Tissues Band-Aides Paper Towels Napkins Wet Wipes (to wipe hands for messy projects) Thank you in advance Math Exploration: This week children were engaged in a variety of interactive, hands-on math activities including: Activity 7-9: Math Practices and Problem Solving: Using Appropriate Tools *Objective: Using tools to subtract numbers. *Essential Understanding: Good math thinkers know how to pick the right tools to solve math problems. Activity 8-1: Decompose and Represent Numbers to 5 *Objective: Writing equations to show the parts of numbers up to 5. *Essential Understanding: Numbers can be broken apart in many ways. An addition equation can show how a number is broken into two parts. Activity 8-2: Related Facts *Objective: Solving related addition and subtraction equations. *Essential Understanding: Addition and subtraction facts have an inverse relationship. Equations using +, -, and =, can be used to show parts of a whole. Activity 8-3: Math Practices and Problem Solving-Reasoning *Objective: Reason about numbers and operations. *Essential Understanding: Good math thinkers know how to think about words and numbers to solve problems. Activity 8-4: Fluently Add & Subtract to 5 *Objective: Write addition and subtraction equations within 5 and remember them. *Essential Understanding: Addition and subtraction facts can be solved using different strategies. Literacy Corner: Students participated in small reading groups and engaged in whole-group literacy activities focusing on the following: *Phonemic Awareness: Blending phonemes and segmenting phonemes. *Phonics: Letter Rr *Words to Know: will, be *Fluency: reading with expression. *Vocabulary strategy: rhyme *Comprehension skill: author’s purpose *Comprehension strategy: analyze/evaluate *Listening & Speaking: sharing ideas *Grammar/Writing: verbs in future tense. *canoe *paddle Vocabulary: *dew *glided *peered *crew Health: Kindergarten students learned how their bodies grow and change, as well as relevant vocabulary. Social Studies: Children learned what it means to be a “handy helper” at school and home. Introducing Reggie Rooster! Mrs. Cavanaugh’s News: All About our Superhero Student of the Week (Last Week): Anika! Last week we learned so many wonderful things about our friend, Anika! Here are some of the interesting facts we learned: All About Anika: My name is Anika Gartelos and I am six years old. My birthday is on September 3rd. I live in Iowa City, IA. I am in Kindergarten. My teacher is Mrs. Cavanaugh. I get to school by Mama’s car. These are the members of my family: My brother Niko, my mom, my dad, my dog Banjo, and of course the wonderful, silly, adorable me…Anika Gartelos! When I grow up I would like to be a vet doctor. My favorite animal is a dog. My favorite color is pink. My favorite food is sushi and Greek potatoes. My favorite book is Family Trip To Mountains. My favorite sports is soccer. My favorite things to do at school are to eat lunch and go to art class. My favorite things to do at home are to play in the Tree Jungle and run around like crazy!
