Thank you for choosing to share your students with sweetFrog. We are pleased to offer our Leap Forward Field Trips to teachers and their students as a fun way to practice fundamental lessons being taught in school. Each lesson plan has been carefully designed by teachers to match skill levels for each grade. Every sweetFrog field trip ends in a sweet reward (a delicious cup of frozen yogurt + one topping of your choice) — making this excursion something both students and teachers can get excited about. Leap Into Kindergarten Math At sweetFrog! Welcome and introduction: Welcome all students to the store. Invite them to come in, sit at tables, and fill out the name tags. Ask the kids “What does math have to do with sweetFrog?” (a lot!) Listen for all answers and then explain that we are going to find lots of ways to use math here in sweetFrog! Tell the students to look at their table and look at cups labeled A, B, and C. Inside each cup there will be different toppings. Ask them, “Which cup do you think has the most toppings in it — without counting.” question 1 (suggestions for toppings: Charleston Chews, Starburst, Fireballs — rectangle/square/circle) Now ask the students to pour out the toppings from each cup, one at a time, count them and write down the answer. questions 2, 3, 4 “What did you find?” “Which cup had the most toppings in it?” question 5 “Which cup had the fewest toppings in it?” question 6 “Are you surprised by that?” Ask them how they would describe the toppings (looking for taller, shorter; heavier, lighter; shorter, longer). Guide them to use those words. Demonstration on rolling carts: Now we are going to check the temperature of the yogurt! Show the students the melted yogurt and frozen yogurt sample. Ask the students about the temperature.“How do we measure temperature?” “What do we use to measure the temperature?” Use the thermometer and measure the temperature of the yogurt (frozen, then melted). “What is the temperature of frozen yogurt?” question 7 “What is the temperature of the melted yogurt?” question 8 “Is there a difference between the temperatures?” (looking for words hot, cold) question 9 “Which is hotter? Colder?” question 10 “Does temperature make a difference to the yogurt?” “Which ones would you like to eat?” Next ask the students which of the yogurts do they think will be heavier or lighter. question 11, 12 Weigh the frozen yogurt on the scale. Do the same with the melted yogurt. Record the weight of each. question 13,14 What did they find? (looking for “heavier, lighter”) Are they surprised by the answer? It’s time to draw Scoop and Cookie/Get frozen yogurt! Instruct students to turn their worksheet over for step by step instructions showing how to draw sweetFrog’s fun mascots. questions 15,16,17,18 While the students are drawing, have one table at a time come up and get their small yogurt and one topping and then go back to the table. The Hands On section of the student worksheet is designed to help collect data for graphing. Make sure they write down what yogurt and topping they get for further problem solving and graphing back at school. questions 19,20 Leap Into Kindergarten Math At sweetFrog! SOL strands: K.1: The student, given two sets, each containing 10 or fewer concrete objects, will identify and describe one set as having more, fewer, or the same number of members as the other set, using the concept of one-to-one correspondence. K.8: The student will identify the instruments used to measure weight (scale)…and temperature (thermometer). K.10: The student will compare two objects or events, using direct comparisons or nonstandard units of measure, according to one or more of the following attributes: …height (taller, shorter), weight (heavier, lighter), temperature (hotter, colder) K.11: The student will A) identify, describe and trace plane geometric figures (circle) B) compare the size (larger, smaller) and shape of plane geometric figures (circle) K.12: The student will describe the location of one object relative to another (above, below, next to) and identify representations of plane geometric figures (circle, triangle, square, and rectangle) regardless of their positions and orientations in space. For further discussion and review at school after your visit to sweetFrog: K.14: The student will display gathered data in object graphs, picture graphs, and tables, and will answer questions related to the data. Set Up Instructions Each table will be a station with students and a chaperone. Set up on each table: • 3 pink cups with toppings in it (i.e.: 14 Charleston chews, 15 Starburst, 10 Fireballs). These toppings work well because of their size differences and they represent three shapes — square, rectangle and circle • name tags, sweetFrog coloring sheet, worksheet, pencils, crayons • wipes Demonstration cart: • a cup of frozen yogurt, a cup of melted yogurt, • a scale, thermometer, • 3 pink cups with toppings (same as students)
