Thank you – to our High School Students’ Union who treated our staff to
cupcakes and hand-made personalized

This was a very thoughtful gesture and
genuinely appreciated by our staff.

following groups for their generous donations to
our awards program and continued encouragement of student success:

your child has an interest/activity that you would like recognized in The Bulletin, please send a
write—up and, if you desire, a photo (in jpeg format please) to [email protected] for consideration in future editions. Bawlf Alumni are also welcome to send an update to let us know

Cross Country Running - Mr. Rob Longhurst
The cross country team had a very successful season. We went to two different races (with the high school runners attending one more). Eighteen runners attended the first race, a tough, muddy course in New Norway. All
of our runners did very well. Notable results include: Colby Craig - 9th, Clarissa Gendreau - 7th, Demi Vermeer
- 10th, Halley Hay - 5th. Two individuals were awarded medals. Raice Szott placed 3rd in her category. This
race was also the regional race for Battle River Junior High schools. Kassidy Baumle placed first, winning
the gold medal and is the regional champion for Grade 7 girls.
Our second race was a held in Hardisty on a very windy Monday evening. Only seven runners attended this
race. Colby Craig and Kassidy Baumle placed 7th and Clarissa Gendreau, Halley Hay and Demi Vermeer
placed 5th in their respective categories. Raice Szott won gold in her race breaking the previous course
record held by Tara Yuha. Hopefully the success of this year will help to build the team for the future. I am looking forward to next year.

Something Told The Wild Geese
Something told the wild geese
It was time to go,
Though the fields lay golden
Something whispered “Snow.”
Leaves were green and stirring,
Berries’ luster glossed,
But beneath warm feathers
Something cautioned –
All the sagging orchards
Steamed with amber spice,
But each wild breast stiffened
At remembered ice,
Something told the wild geese
It was time to fly –
Summer sun was on their
wings,
Winter in their cry.

Coy Robbins—Professional Steer Riding by Derek Robbins
Coy’s season began in Camrose, the first Pro Rodeo of
the year on March 17. He rode for 77.5 points to win his
hometown rodeo and start the season off strong. In
Medicine Hat on April 20, he rode the rank cow for 76
points, and placed second, missing the win by half a
point. One week later, he was bucked off in Coleman
and again the next day in Trail BC where he’d drawn a
good one but was thrown off at 7 seconds. Tough luck!
May 11 saw Coy in Stavely where he was fourth. From
then on, he was on the road, entered in two to three
rodeos every weekend. He went to 52 rodeos this year
across three provinces in places such as: Falkland,
Cranbrook (fourth), Merritt, and Dawson Creek in BC,
Peace River, Pincher Creek (third), Taber (second),
Grande Prairie (fourth), Lethbridge (third), and the Ponoka and Calgary Stampedes in Alberta, Maple Creek
and Kennedy, Saskatchewan including just about everywhere in between!! There were LOTS of miles!!! There
were many rodeos he rode in but there weren’t enough
points to place in the money. He rode 68% of the animals he drew (that is a good riding range). He only
placed on 24% that rode, that’s out of his control, it’s up
to the judges. He did his job and that was, ride ‘em! On
June 22, he rode in Wainwright and drew the same cow
he’d ridden in Medicine Hat and got 75.5 points. He
was sitting first for the four days until the last ride of the
last day when his good friend drew the same cow and
beat him by half a point to win it. The next day, his thirteenth birthday, he fractured his jaw in Sundre. The
following weekend, he rode in Ponoka for 80 points and was the leader until the last day when two kids
rode for 81.5 and 84 points. Coy had a good year, his first year riding professional, fourth year riding
steers. He just missed qualifying for the Canadian Finals Rodeo at Rexall Place in November. The top
six in Canada go and he ended up ninth. He missed it by $358! He has one more year riding steers
professionally so he can fulfill the dream he’s had since he was four – to ride steers at the CFR! He
can’t wait for the next year to start, this year isn’t even over yet, that’s how much he loves it. It’s his
passion and dream to be a professional cowboy.

Royal Canadian Legion Poster and Essay Contest
For many, many years, The Royal Canadian Legion has sponsored the Annual Literary and
Poster Contest that is open to all Canadian school children. The youths that participate in the
contest assist the Legion in one of our primary goals – fostering the tradition of Remembrance amongst Canadians.
The contest is divided into four categories:
 Primary (Poster Contest only) – grades 1,2 and 3;
 Junior – grades 4, 5 and 6;
 Intermediate – grades 7, 8 and 9; and

Senior – grades 10, 11, 12.
Initial judging takes place at the community level by volunteers at local Legion branches and
the winning entries progress to judging at the Provincial level. The winning entries at this
level are forwarded to Ottawa where they are judged and the National winners declared. The
names and work of all the National winners are published. Students may enter as many contests as they wish to but may submit only one entry for each category. See our website for
more contest information. http://www.legion.ca/Poppy/contests_e.cfm

Parent to Parent: A School Council Update
By Karin Naslund
Hi Everyone and Welcome Back
Wow, it seems activity doubles once September hits with school and out of school activities starting,
and harvest getting underway. The School Council Executive had a meeting in late August and
hosted the 1st “Boo Hoo” Coffee Party for parents of kindergarten children where we wiped tears
while talking about the school and answering questions (Thanks to Carol N. and Michelle B. for planning). We hope to have similar opportunities throughout the year with parents from all grades.
I want to introduce your Executive for 2012-2013 who were elected at the June Annual General
Meeting:
