Hurley’s GROOVY Newsletter January 13, 2017 REMINDERS: Please remember to return the agenda and homework folder each day. MLK Day: No School – Monday, January 16 Good News Club begins: Monday, January 30 Spring Break: March 13 – 24 (March 20 – 24 possible snow make-up days) Fridays: Students may wear a hat for 25 cents. HOMEWORK All homework needs to be finished each night and returned the next morning. This is not only building responsibility but aiding in their practice of that day’s skills. Also, ipads need to be charged nightly in order to use throughout the next day. A look back at this week...… Reading: The students read tall tales this week. We focused on the following skills: visualizing, synonyms/antonyms, point of view, and Greek/Latin roots (fals, fall, cert, cred, phob). Language: We worked on indefinite pronouns (several, all, everyone, anybody, etc.) and subject-verb agreement. Additional daily practice was used to help reinforce all 5th grade language skills. Writing: The students practiced correcting sentences on their morning work. Math: The kids worked on these skills this week: estimate fraction sums/differences, common denominators/equivalent fractions, add/subtract fractions, and add/subtract mixed numbers. Social Studies: The students learned more about the 13 colonies (New England, Middle, and Southern). Science: The class began their unit on Life Science.
