John G. Carlisle Elementary School CLC partners with 5/3 Bank for Young Bankers Club John G. Carlisle Elementary Community Learning Center is excited to partner with Fifth Third Bank to provide Young Bankers Club to students in the CLC Cubs Zone 4th and 5th grade groups. Young Bankers Students is a 10 week financial literacy and career exploration class. Fifth Third Bank employees at local branches come to John G. Carlisle on Thursday afternoons and teach financial literacy to students that re-enforces the basics of reading, mathematics and social studies. The 10 week unit includes lessons on the basics about money, including what it is and how people get it, the importance of saving, and how education and career choices affect the future. Volunteer mentors provide leadership, guidance and friendship throughout the course making every effort to develop a rapport with the individual group of students assigned to them. Additionally, Fifth Third is providing two field trips for the Young Bankers Club to Northern Kentucky University and the Fifth Third Madisonville Operation Center and will host a graduation ceremony at John G. This unit emphasized Langston Hughes’ poetry and his contribution to the Harlem Renaissance. Students learned about Langston Hughes by reading and analyzing his poetry, and discussing how visual and audio elements add to the tone, beauty, and meaning of his poetry. Then, they studied Harlem Renaissance artist, Aaron Douglas. They analyzed his artwork and noted that all of his pieces contained similar elements such as circles, tint, shade, and silhouettes. As a culminating project, students read Langston Hughes' poem, "I Dream a World." Each student randomly selected a line from the poem and illustrated that line in the style of Aaron Douglas. As a compliment to these lessons, Mrs. Breitenstein requested funding from the PTA to bring a performing arts group called Langston Hughes and Blues to John G. Carlisle for the entire 4th and 5th grade. This professional group combines the poetry of Langston Hughes, blues music, and Hughes’ biography into a theatrical performance. This performance helped deepen the students’ understanding of Hughes’ lasting influence on poetry. When you set goals for yourself and are conscientious about your work, your child learns that these things are important. When you help her with a project even though you are tired, she learns that education is a priority. Your small actions, repeated over and over, have the greatest impact. Learning to win without gloating and lose without complaining will help your child on the field and in the classroom.
