The Word of the Lord. Responsorial Psalm (Cantor first, then all) ALL: Thanks be to God. Psalm 23 Second Reading Act 20:17-18a,28-32,36 From Miletus Paul had the presbyters of the Church at Ephesus summoned. When they came to him, he addressed them, "Keep watch over yourselves and over the whole flock of which the Holy Spirit has appointed you overseers, in which you tend the Church of God that he acquired with his own Blood. I know that after my departure savage wolves will come among you, and they will not spare the flock. And from your own group, men will come forward perverting the truth to draw the disciples away after them. So be vigilant and remember that for three years, night and day, I unceasingly admonished each of you with tears. And now I commend you to God and to that gracious word of his that can build you up and give you the inheritance among all who are consecrated." When he had finished speaking he knelt down and prayed with them all. The Word of the Lord. Gospel Acclamation (Cantor first, then all) ALL: Thanks be to God. Festival Alleluia James Chepponis Gospel Matthew 9:35-38 Please remain standing until the Archbishop reverences the Book of the Gospels. Rite of Ordination Election of the Candidates The names of the ordinandi are called individually. Each one answers “Present” before he comes forward, entering the sanctuary. Very Reverend John Kartje, the Rector, in the name of the whole Church, asks the Archbishop to ordain these men, our brothers, to the responsibility of the priesthood. He then testifies to their worthiness. Archbishop: Relying on the help of the Lord God and our Savior Jesus Christ, we choose these, our brothers, for the Order of the Priesthood. All: Thanks be to God. All give their assent with applause. Homily Archbishop Cupich delivers the homily. He addresses the people and the elect on the order of the priesthood. Promise of the Elect After the homily, the elect alone rise and stand before the Archbishop, who questions them. They are asked if they are resolved: to discharge the office of Priesthood to preach the Gospel and teach the Catholic faith worthily and wisely to celebrate faithfully and reverently the mysteries of Christ, especially the sacrifice of the Eucharist and the Sacrament of Reconciliation for the glory of God and the sanctification of the Christian people to implore God’s mercy upon the people by observing the command to pray without ceasing to be united more closely to Christ the High Priest and to consecrate themselves to God for the salvation of all. Promise of Respect and Obedience The elect now individually approach the Archbishop and kneeling before him, promise him their respect and obedience. Litany of Supplication (Please stand) The Archbishop stands, faces the people, and, with hands joined, invites them to pray. All kneel and pray the litany together. Archbishop: Hear us, we beseech you, Lord our God, and pour out on these servants of yours the blessing of the Holy Spirit And the power of priestly grace, that those whom in the sight of your mercy We offer to be consecrated, may be surrounded By your rich and unfailing gifts. Through Christ our Lord. ALL: Amen. Laying on of Hands In solemn silence, the Spirit is imparted by the Archbishop through the laying on of hands. This sacred gesture confers the priestly office and its indelible character. The Archbishop, along with his brother priests, asks Almighty God to grant the candidates the dignity of the priesthood by a Spirit of holiness thus enabling the priest to be a worthy helper of the Archbishop in his Apostolic Ministry. Please be seated after the Archbishop has laid hands on the Ordinandi. Please join in praying and singing the hymns during the Laying on of Hands. Veni Creator Spiritus Pueblo de Reyes If Ye Love Me Thomas Tallis If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may bide with you for ever, ev’n the spirit of truth. Lord, When You Came to the Seashore/Barka Prayer of Ordination (Please stand.) The priest is configured to Christ the servant through the Prayer of Ordination so he may preach, celebrate the mysteries, and gather people in Christ. Archbishop: All: Draw near, O Lord, holy Father, … who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God for ever and ever. Amen. Investiture with Stole and Chasuble (Please be seated.) The newly ordained are vested with the liturgical garb of priests.
