August marks the beginning of a new school year and a new calendar year for piano. I’m looking
forward to what’s in store for the coming year and have several exciting and fun things in
preparation, including a sight-reading contest and much more. Let’s start the year out right with a
new determination to do our best and become the musicians we long to be. Here’s to a great year!
Student Summer Fun
It’s been a fun summer! Several students
have enjoyed choosing and playing project
pieces over the summer months instead of
their regular piano books. Many have taken
once-in-a-lifetime vacations, visited family and
friends they don’t often see, enjoyed camps
and other summer fun.
Nathan VanWingerden: Taking care of his 18
puppies and getting to keep one; swimming;
playing River Dance and The Traveling
I asked my students their favorite thing about
this summer, and those who responded had
this to say:
Maya Hillis: Going to Disney World.
Reed Richardson: Staying with grandparents;
seeing cousins, going to Holiday World,
Chicago, Sears Tower, and the aquarium;
playing summer pieces, Linus & Lucy and the
Star Wars Theme.
Julia Law: Attending Dunbar Theatre Camp,
Camp Curiosity, British Soccer Camp; being a
crew leader for VBS; playing Flowing
Cascades and Stunt Double.
Olivia Manuel: Trip to Europe; Playing
Jurassic Park.
Sarah Manuel: Visiting England, Austria,
Germany, France, The Netherlands, Italy and
Switzerland; Playing Ne Me Quitte Pas.
Makena Freese: Adventure Camp; visiting
with cousins and uncle and aunt from Illinois;
traveling to Indiana with grandparents;
Playing Tico Tango.

University campus. She met a
lot of new people and made
a lot of new friends, all while
learning, doing various
activities, joining various
clubs and overall having a
great time.

We celebrated our pets in the
July newsletter, and Danni just
missed sending me her info
in time for last month’s issue.
Danni’s dog, Tina is a 1-year-old
border collie mix. “I love playing
with her, taking her for walk,
feeding her and teaching her
tricks. She’s very soft and she
likes playing with her toys
and tearing them up.”

July is another busy month with several
family birthdays. We started off with a visit
from my stepdad, Melvin, who lives in
Virginia and turned 70 on July 6.
Evie stayed overnight with us, and we took
her to Sky Zone (highly recommended!) and
her favorite restaurant, Red Robin.
We celebrated our daughter, Andrea’s
birthday July 26, and Evie’s 6th birthday July
28.
Anthony and I attended a Legends game
with several friends from church.
