The Falcon Carrier Volume 1, Issue 2 A Safety First Culture February, 2017 A Message from our COO/CFO David Henry Hello All, The Falcon Carrier We have been blessed with the weather thus far in 2017, but don’t get too confident. It only takes one day of snow or freezing rain to change a driver’s life forever. As a company, we need to continually be mindful of the need for safe driving and caution, but we’ll take 60 and sunshine in February any day. Our initial plan in 2017 was to diversify from General Motors with our Flatbed and General Commodity division. I am pleased to report that this is going well, and both divisions are up substantially on a month over month basis. With more trucks, we become more important to some shippers and we are seeing better freight as a result. To close, we appreciate everything you do. These are the toughest months to drive and be exposed to the elements. Every single person here is devoted to servicing our drivers, and making this a better place for them for years to come. 2017 will be an exciting year and we are pleased for you to be a part of it. Sincerely, David Henry Chief Operating / Financial Officer Inside this issue: Recruiting News! 2 Billing and Payroll 2 Service Awards 3 Clean Inspections/ 3 Safety/ Challenge Compliance Update 3 Training Info 4 Uncle Milty’s Safety Corner 5 Operations News As we roll into February, Falcon has some exciting things happening. The main compliance requirements that you need to adhere to prior to expiration are your annual violation review, DOT physical, and CDL. Each of these expiration dates is located on your pay settlement and reminder letters are sent to you via email and/or mail. First, annual violation review forms must be completed by every driver at least once every 12 months. When completing an annual violation review form, you must provide a list of all moving violations that you have been convicted for or any violation of which you have forfeited bond or collateral during the preceding 12 months. This form must be completed on or by the due date and sent to the compliance department via fax at 330.270.7376 or via email at [email protected]. Next, all CDL drivers must be physically qualified to operate a CMV. This means that you must get a DOT physical completed by a medical examiner listed on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners before it expires and update your medical and self certification with your state DMV. Upon completion, you must send a copy of your physical long form and medical card to the compliance department via fax at 330.270.7376 or via email at [email protected]. To schedule your DOT physical, please call the compliance department at least 30 days prior to your expiration date at 330.793.1345 x120. Finally, every time you renew your CDL, the compliance department needs a copy of the front and back of your new CDL. If you reside in a state that issues a temporary CDL, you must send in a copy of the front and back of the temporary CDL and then a copy of the front and back of your permanent CDL upon receipt. To send in a copy of your CDL, you can fax it to 330.270.7376 or email it to [email protected]. “It is important all drivers remain compliant and qualified to drive under DOT regulations. “ If compliance requirements are not met prior to expiration, you could be placed on a compliance hold, where you will be unable to work. So, do not wait until the last minute to get these important and mandatory compliance requirements met! Most states will allow you to renew your CDL up to 30 days in advance of the expiration date and physicals can also be set up 30 days in advance of the expiration date. Number one reason is your CSA score is your personal profile it’s a reflection of you are as a professional driver. Second reason it reduces the number of times that you will get pulled over by the D.O.T. A speeding truck not only attracts attention it demands it! Statistics show that speeding if the root cause of around a third of all roadside inspections. Speeding is a Driver Controllable behavior, along with all other moving violations. Obey the posted speed limit and you will be inspected less frequently. One of the major reasons for inspections is driving with “Observable Defects” driving equipment with visible problems. An observable defect dares the inspector to initiate an inspection. Observable defects can be significantly reduced through Driver controllable behavior, such as quality pre-trip inspections. Inspection without a root cause of Unsafe Driving or Observable Defects fall into a third group: ISS / Other. Often, a fleet’s Inspection Selection System (ISS) score is responsible for initiating an inspection. A higher ISS score causes an inspector to initiate an inspection. A vicious cycle can be created where speeding and observable defects cause more inspections and more violations which ultimately result in a higher ISS score. Remember these important items if you are pulled over for a roadside inspection: • Be organized, have all of your paperwork ready (CDL, Medical Certificate, and Vehicle registration). • Make sure your truck has been maintained, especially tires, brakes and lights. These are the most common violations that Falcon drivers are cited for. (Always do a pre-trip inspection). • Make sure if a violation is not found that you get a roadside showing this. In some cases, the officer will let you go without issuing a report. We want one if it is clean. Milton Van Horn Director of Safety “Lowering CSA scores should be a priority for every driver” Please Remember: All roadsides need to be logged at the appropriate time, on-duty not driving. If there are equipment violations, you must complete a DVIR then contact the breakdown department to arrange to have the violation corrected. SAFETY IS A PRIORITY, NOT AN OPTION! If you find yourself getting sick or getting tired while driving, remove yourself off of the roadway and park somewhere safe until you can safely drive again. Under FMCSA Regulation 392.3 ; Driving ill or Fatigued: you will be stopped by law enforcement and placed Out—of-Service for a driving a commercial motor vehicle w hen so impaired that you should not continue the trip; and , or your ability tor alertness is so impaired, or so likely to become impaired, through fatigue as to make it unsafe to operate the cmv. Remember use caution when answering an officers questions. You do no want to assist in getting a violation because you have volunteered too much information. Iric Fidram, Safety Manager
