Binary fission occurs when a singlecelled protist divides into two cells. Multiple fission occurs when two offspring are formed from one parent. A food vacuole collects enzymes to digest food. The digested food then passes into the amoeba. To get rid of waste, the amoeba reverses this process and the waste-filled vacuole is moved to the edge of the cell and is released. If there is not enough water or nutrients available, a protist will not have the proper energy to reproduce asexually. It will then reproduce sexually until the conditions improve. Red algae also have a red pigment in their cells that gives them a red color. Lichens absorb water and minerals from the air, so if lichens are abundant, the air quality is good. If they are not, air pollution may be a problem in the area. Answers will vary. Sample answer: Lichens are a combination of both fungi and algae. The algae produce food through photosynthesis. The fungi provide a protective wall that keeps the lichen from drying out. A is a micronucleus and it passes genetic material to another individual during sexual reproduction.
