Read the pairs of sentences below.
Picky eaters might have a hard time finding restaurants that suit their tastes. Shoppers sometimes benefit in
the long run by being choosy about what they buy.
People who eat well and exercise can appear youthful in old age. Immature students sometimes act out in
class to get attention.
Now follow the steps to determine which underlined words have a positive and which
underlined words have a negative connotation.
1. Look up the denotation, or dictionary definition of the underlined words in each pair of
sentences.
2. Look for context clues in the sentence that point to the connotation, or emotional
associations, connected to each word.
3. Use your own knowledge of how each word is used.
