The main purpose of this research was to identify what types of available recreation opportunities were being used and to measure the extent and satisfaction with these opportunities. Obtaining primary data from residents directly will enable Recreation, Parks and Culture officials to make decisions that accurately reflect the perspectives of current (and potential) users. This report will provide a comprehensive review of all steps undertaken in the development and implementation of the survey, as well as a detailed summary of the results. A review of the methodology associated in the development and implementation of the survey can be found in the next section of this report. II. METHODOLOGY A. The Questionnaire The questionnaire used in this study was developed by Recreation, Parks and Culture and modified by CPIA for adaptation as a telephone survey (see Appendix A for a copy of the full questionnaire). The questionnaire contained a series of questions asking about the extent that residents were making use of various facilities, programs and services. There were a combination of close-ended and open-ended questions, and the survey was also made available to residents through the Strathcona County website.1 1 A comparison of the web results to the overall results from the telephone survey will be presented in the results section of this report, beginning on page 13. 2012 Strathcona County Recreation Survey Results 2 B. Sampling Design and Data Collection Procedure The sample frame used in the telephone collection portion of this study were residents of Strathcona County who were 15 years of age or older. The sample frame incorporated a statistical proportion estimate of 0.5, which assumes that there is a homogeneous mixture of attitudes and opinions about the quality of life in Strathcona County. A 95% confidence interval was established for this study, which is standard for any public opinion study that utilizes a random sample of residents. The sample frame for the telephone survey consisted of 500 people living in urban2 and rural parts of Strathcona County. The number of urban and rural residents was reflective of the proportionate distribution of residents living in Strathcona County. As such, 70% of the sample was drawn from the urban area, while 30% came from rural parts of Strathcona County. The sample frame provided overall results3 accurate to within ± 4.32%, 19 times out of 20. Slightly more females (52.8%) than males (47.2%) were interviewed. The online survey was undertaken by 307 residents. It should be noted that the majority of online respondents were female (76%). A telephone survey research design was used to collect the data for this study. Respondents were contacted by telephone between October 26th and October 30th, 2012. Strathcona County derived telephone numbers from the Select Phone Canadian Edition database along with the Telus Telephone Directory and randomized them for this study. Trained interviewers from Banister Research & Consulting Inc. made all telephone calls under supervised conditions. Each questionnaire took an average of 10 minutes to complete. The data was analyzed by Strathcona County’s Corporate Planning and Intergovernmental Affairs using SPSS for Windows. 2 In this report, the urban component of Strathcona County is Sherwood Park. The ±4.35% is the margin of error associated with this study and refers to the potential percentage spread that exists within answers to particular questions. This means that an answer could be up to 4.35% higher or lower than what is reported. 3 2012 Strathcona County Recreation Survey Results III. 3 RESULTS – TELEPHONE SURVEY This section of the report presents a summary of the results associated with the perceptions and awareness of residents. Socio-demographic comparisons, where significant, are also highlighted. Comparisons will also be made with data collected from the previous year’s survey, when significant differences occur. A. Overall Participation Patterns Overall, just over 39% of residents or their families took part in any organized sport within the past 12 months. However, just over 62% indicated that they did participate in drop in, spontaneous or casual recreation activities in the same time period. There were no differences in participation rates for either organized sport or casual recreation activities on the basis of where people lived. However, gender (Figure 1) was a factor when it came to participation in organized sport, with more males taking part in organized sport compared to females. Participation in casual recreation activities, however, was similar between males and females. FIGURE 1 Percentage of Strathcona County Residents who participated in Organized Sports and/or Casual Recreation Activities Gender Comparisons 80 63.3 61.1 P ercentage 60 42.4 36.4 40 20 0 Males Organized Sport Females Casual Recreation Activities 2012 Strathcona County Recreation Survey Results 4 With respect to age (Figure 2), it can be seen in Figure 2 that participation in organized sport decreased as the age of the resident increased. Participation in casual recreation activities, however, was strong among all age groups, and while participation was seen to decline among older residents, it was still considerably stronger than organized sport participation. FIGURE 2 Percentage of Strathcona County Residents who participated in Organized Sports and/or Casual Recreation Activities Age Comparisons 100 82.3 72.9 P ercentage 80 60 68.8 67.7 58.3 58.6 42 41.9 40 26.1 19.1 20 0 15-34 35-44 Organized Sport 45-54 55-64 65+ Casual Recreation Activities B. Use of County Indoor Recreation Facilities Overall, it was found that 68% of respondents indicated that either they or another member of their household used at least one Strathcona County recreation facility within the past 12 months. A further investigation revealed that a greater percentage of residents living in Sherwood Park did this (69.4%) compared to those living in rural Strathcona (64.7%). No differences in use were seen between males (67.8%) and females (68.2%). In terms of age, it can be seen from Figure 3 that there was very strong use noted by those under the age of 45. Usage drops slightly among those aged 45 to 54, and continues to decline as residents get older 2012 Strathcona County Recreation Survey Results 5 FIGURE 3 Percentage of Residents who used (or had family members use) one or more Strathcona County Indoor Recreation Facilities Age Comparisons 100 92.7 85.4 78.6 P ercentage 80 62.2 60 39.7 40 20 0 15-34 35-44 45-54 55-64 65+ A series of questions pertaining to the different aspects of the indoor facilities were asked to those residents who made use of one or more of them. Overall, 60.4% used a wellness centre. A breakdown of what portions of the wellness center were used by males and females is depicted in Figure 4. With the exception of drop-in group fitness classes, most of the wellness centre options were used relatively equally by males and females. Participation in Organized Indoor County Recreation or Cultural Programs Overall, it was found that 31.6% of respondents indicated that either they or another member of their household participated in at least one Strathcona County indoor recreation or cultural program within the past 12 months. No differences in participation were seen between males (29.2%) and females (33.7%), or location of residence – Sherwood Park (31.4%) and Rural Strathcona (32.0%). In terms of age, however, it can be seen from Figure 10 that there was strong participation noted by those under the age of 45. Signing up for organized programs drops significantly after age 44 and continues to decline as residents get older FIGURE 10 Percentage of Residents who indicated that they (or other family members) Participated in Indoor Strathcona County Recreation or Cultural Programs Age Comparisons 80 P ercentage 60 56.3 55.2 40 28.8 27 13.7 20 0 15-34 35-44 45-54 55-64 65+ Those residents who had signed up for recreation or cultural programs were read a series of program opportunities and asked to indicate which one(s) they or another family member participated in within the past 12 months. The overall results are shown in Figure11. Swimming lessons were the most popular choice, followed by Festival Place professional presentations. Overall, 24.7% of residents had other comments about the various indoor recreation programs in Strathcona County. 2012 Strathcona County Recreation Survey Results 10 FIGURE 11 Recreation & Cultural Program Participation Swimming Lessons 56.3 Festival Place Professional Presentations 34.6 Fitness Services 26.8 Drop in Sports Pgms 26.6 Summer Camps/Day Camps 26.6 Performing Arts Pgms 24.7 Group Aquatic Fitness Classes 21.5 Youth/Teen Registered Pgms 19 Registered Preschool Pgms 17.7 Visual Arts Pgms 15.2 Youth/Teen Drop-in Pgms 10.8 Nutritional Services 8.2 0 20 40 Percentage 60 80 Overall, just over half of the respondents (50.7%) had visited at least one of Strathcona County’s arts or cultural facilities within the past 12 months. It was also determined that 58.6% of respondents were aware that Strathcona County had a new art gallery, the Gallery@501 in the Community Centre. This suggests that there are residents who are aware of the Gallery, but have not yet paid it a visit, thus demonstrating at least that there is recognition of its existence. 2012 Strathcona County Recreation Survey Results 11 D. Use of Outdoor Spaces Overall, it was found that 85% of respondents indicated that either they or another member of their household made use of at least one of Strathcona County’s outdoor spaces (e.g. parks, playgrounds, trails, sports fields or open spaces) within the past 12 months. No differences in use were seen for gender; however, those living in Sherwood Park (87.7%) had a higher tendency to use one or more outdoor spaces compared to those living in Rural Strathcona (68.7%). In terms of age, however, it can be seen from Figure 12 that use of outdoor recreation space lessened as the age of the resident increased. Please remember that the telephone survey covered residents who were users and non-users of recreation facilities, while the online survey targeted residents who were active users. For some items, comparisons between online and telephone survey respondents cannot be done because of differences in how the questions were asked.4 A breakdown of the portions of the wellness center used by telephone respondents and online respondents is depicted in Figure 12. More residents from the telephone survey used the machines and free weights compared to those who completed the online survey. Online respondents, however, made greater use of the drop-in group fitness classes.
