Emily Hobhouse
A British woman, Emily Hobhouse, came to South Africa to
inspect the British concentration camps. She was horrified
at the conditions she found in these camps. She enlisted
support and was able to improve the conditions.
Write a letter to your friends or family or the British
officials as if you were Emily Hobhouse to describe the
conditions and appeal for help.

Anglo-Boer War
Use the information about the Jameson Raid in the box below and write
an exciting newspaper report:
In 1895, a column of 600 armed men was led by Dr Leander Starr Jameson over
the ZAR border towards Johannesburg to liberate Johannesburg from the
control of the Transvaal government. However, the Transvaal authorities had
advance warning of the Jameson Raid and tracked it from the moment it crossed
the border. Four days later, the weary and dispirited column was surrounded
near Krugersdorp within sight of Johannesburg. After a brief skirmish in which
the column lost 65 killed and wounded, and the Boers lost one man, Jameson's
men surrendered and were, in turn, arrested by the Boers.

Baden-Powel and boy scouts
Use the information in the box below and write a short description of the skills Baden-Powel taught his cadets
and how some are still taught to boy scouts to this day:
The Mafeking Cadet Corps was a group of boy cadets during
the siege of Mafeking which took place over 217 days during
the Second Boer War in 1899-1900. Robert Baden-Powell was
the British colonel charged with defending the town.
Because of the shortage of manpower in the town, boys were
used to support the troops, carry messages, and help in the
hospital. This freed up men for military duties, and kept the
boys occupied.
The cadets consisted of volunteer white boys below fighting age. Their leader was the 13 year old Warner
Goodyear, who became their Sergeant-Major. They were given khaki uniforms and a wide-brimmed hat
which they wore with one side turned up, and a Glengarry cap, and the towns people often commented on
their smartness.
One of the cadets' duties was to carry messages around the town and to outlying forts, sometimes as much as
a mile away across open ground. At first they used donkeys, but as the siege ran on, food became scarce and
the donkeys ended up in the kitchen. From then on, the cadets used bicycles instead.
Another important duty was to act as lookouts, mainly to warn the townspeople when the Boer siege guns
were aimed and fired at different parts of the town. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafeking_Cadet_Corps

Guerrilla Warfare
Comic Strip Drawings
Although the Anglo Boer war was considered by some to be ‘the last of the gentleman’s wars’,
the Boers used guerrilla warfare tactics. Read about these in AASA page 43 and draw the
Boers at war using these strategies in comic strips in the boxes below. Try including information
about trench warfare and General Koos de la Rey in your comic strip.
