Using the list provided identify and label all physical features on the

AP Human Geography Summer Assignment 2015-2016
Northeast High School (Mr. Alford)
Goal: To identify and label important locations and physical features throughout the world in order to make pertinent
spatial location connections.
Materials: Attached are three (3) maps (the first is a blank for physical features and the other two are blank for countries
and cities), and a list of important countries, cities, and physical features. You will also need a pencil or pen, and colored
pencils to assist in labeling and coloring the given features.
Directions: Using
the list provided identify and label all physical features on the
physical map and all locations (countries and cities) on the political map.
Additionally, create a map key that shows a symbol of your choice for the following
items: capitals, cities, oceans, rivers, mountain ranges, and deserts. Use color to
differentiate bodies of water (oceans, rivers & lakes, etc), mountain ranges,
deserts, etc. Please carefully select the colors you use to reflect the natural
landscape. Draw all features to scale. To save space and provide a good study tool,
you can use the letters and numbers for the purpose of labeling (instead of writing
out the full name of the location/landform).
Assignment Value: 50 points
Due Date: Both maps are due, completed, at the end of the first week of class. Maps will be accepted beyond the due
date, but only for partial credit.
Particulars: I would suggest making some copies or print out more maps in case of a major “goof-up” (however, whiteout can be your friend as long as it’s not used extensively!). The paper size I used is size 8 x 11. If it’s not big enough, feel
free to make larger copies of your maps somewhere like OfficeMax, or use multiple copies of the maps to complete
certain regions.
Bigger is better for labeling purposes!
-Please take notice of the rubric included. This is how you will be graded!
-In order to accurately label all of the included locations and features, I would recommend purchasing a relatively
inexpensive (no more than $20) World Atlas from Barnes and Noble (or somewhere similar) to assist in your summer
venture and throughout the year. The internet is also a reliable source for locations (however, it’s not transportable to
the beach). You may also wish to check out the following websites to review locations:
http://www.sheppardsoftware.com/Geography.htm
http://www.worldatlas.com/
- Be mindful that this assignment was not meant to be completed in one day (or at 2 AM the day before school starts).
You should work progressively on this throughout the summer.
-After you’ve completed these maps please take time to study them. You will be quizzed on these locations throughout
the year with announced quizzes. You will also need to reference these maps for the ENTIRE year.
-Take this seriously, and look on the bright side, you can take pride in the fact that you will no longer be a geographic
novices, but masters of geographic knowledge☺ HAVE A GREAT SUMMER!!!
