DECEMBER SHOOT
We had one other new shooter (Jake the Snake)
that was mentored by Kid Whiskey.
It turned out to be a great day for a shoot. It
started out pretty cold, but soon warmed up to
fairly comfortable temperatures. We had 34
shooters, including 5 marines that were there for
the Toys for Tots presentation and stayed to
shoot the match. Thanks to the cowboys that
volunteered to mentor our visitors(Dal Sackett,
Desperado Dale, Hollifer A. Dollar, Rum Eyed
Dave, and Sammy Jo). They provided guns and
ammo for the marines and safely coached them
through the match. Thanks also to those
that had extra guns and ammo available just in
case they were needed. We had one other new
We presented a check for $2500.00 to the Marine
Corps for their Toys for Tots drive.

March Match Changes
The March 12th, 2017 Match has been
rescheduled to March 5th, 2017. This is to
accommodate the large number of shooters
going to "A Dark Day on the Santa Fe", the
SASS Southeastern Territorial Black Powder
Championship on March 11th, 2017
Toys for Tots Christmas Party
We contributed $2500 to the Toys for Tots
Campaign. Our total contributions since
program inception are approaching $14,000. I
think the Panhandle Cowboys can be very
proud of this accomplishment. Special thanks
to Navajo Kid for hosting the party in his RV
barn. Special thanks are also due to Dal
Sackett for soliciting raffle prizes and
coordinating the raffle. This accomplishment
would not be possible without the raffle prizes
and the cowboys that buy the raffle tickets.
Thanks also to Mad Dane for acting as Master
of Ceremonies for the party. Thanks to
Cassidy Jane and Sammy Jo for their work in
organizing the party and the setup and
teardown for the party, as well as the other
Cowboys that helped with setup (Navajo Kid,
Robin Rustler, Texas Sweet Pea, and Tulsa
Herder).

GREAT SUCCESS
Continued from page 1
Our donation includes the proceeds from the
December match and a small amount to round up
our donation to the next $100 increment. Thanks
to all who donated raffle prizes and who
participated in the raffle to make this possible.
Thanks also to those who donated their time and
energy to make this happen. Special thanks to
Navajo Kid for allowing us to use his facility for
our Christmas Party/Charity Raffle. I think we
did ourselves proud once again. We have donated
nearly $14,000 to the Toys for Tots over the past
few years.
MC Mad Dane and crew
As always a big “THANK YOU” to all the folks
who set up, take down, run the sign ups and keep
it all running smoothly. Without everyone
working together shooting would not be possible.

COMMON STARTING
POSITIONS EXPLAINED
It comes up frequently at matches, “What do
you mean cowboy port arms?” How is that
different from military port arms? Well in an
effort to cut down on confusion and maintain
the highest level of safety here are the
descriptions of commonly used starting
positions.
If no starting position is given, the shooter
shall stand upright with revolvers
holstered and hands at the side, not
touching any firearm. (SASS Shooter
Handbook page 22)
Cowboy Port Arms is defined as standing
upright with the butt of the long gun at or
below the waist of the shooter, the muzzle at
or above the shoulder, and the long gun held
with both hands. (SASS Shooter Handbook
page 22) Also here is a link to a Longhunter
video that is very good at explaining Cowboy
port arms.
Rifle, Pistol or shotgun at the ready. Firearm
loaded in firing position pointed at first target
in string with finger outside of trigger guard

Texas Surrender is defined as shooter having
both hands on pistols. (note: Texans never
surrender “Remember the Alamo”)

Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson
“Always mystify, mislead,
and surprise the enemy,
if possible; and when you
strike and overcome him,
never let up the pursuit
so long as your men have
strength to follow; for an
army routed, if hotly
pursued, becomes panicstricken, and can then be
destroyed by half their
number.”
Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson was a
Confederate lieutenant general in the Civil War.
He won his nickname at the Battle of First Bull
Run (First Manassas), but it was his actions at
Harpers Ferry in 1861, his 1862 Shenandoah
Valley Campaign, and the flanking maneuver at
the Battle of Chancellorsville that made him a
military legend. Only General Robert E. Lee
occupies a higher place in the Confederate
pantheon, and prior to the Seven Days Battles,
Jackson was a greater hero to the South than
Lee was. A devout Christian who believed in
predestination, he saw himself as an instrument
of God’s will, an Old Testament–style
commander of armies in the service of his Lord.
He was mortally wounded by his own men
during the Battle of Chancellorsville, and many
people have speculated that if he had been alive
to participate in Lee’s Pennsylvania Campaign
the Battle of Gettysburg would have resulted in
Confederate victory.
