Head Lines
November is always an important month for our older pupils involved in studying for National
Qualifications.
Parents should know that our S4 pupils are preparing for their Prelim Examinations; these start on
December 3. All S4 should be involved in revision, examination practice and, where appropriate,
informal study opportunities in school. Of course, the impact of homework and study cannot be
under-estimated and parents are encouraged to support our young people in their build up to the
exams.
Senior pupils may be in the process of preparing for National Assessment Bank (NAB) tests. These
are vital in ensuring our student pass all aspects of the SQA examinations to follow. Seniors are
encouraged to map out their study.
We wish all of our S4, S5 and S6 students well and remind them that hard work will bring reward,
even if the final SQA examinations seem a very long way ahead.
This edition features a wealth of activities undertaken in recent weeks. The reader, I am sure, will
appreciate the commitment of staff, pupils and parents to each of these. As ever, my thanks go to all
involved in continuing to make our school such a vibrant and exciting place.
George Cooper
Head Teacher

Rights Respecting Schools
In week beginning Monday 29th October S6 pupils gave a
presentation promoting Rights Respecting Schools to all year groups.
This will be follow up activities to this during registration in week
beginning 5th November.
What is a Rights Respecting School?
A Rights Respecting School promotes the UN convention on the
rights of the child (UNCRC). The UN convention consists of 54
articles in total, with each article referring to a right.
There are 2 level of awards; Level 1 and Level 2. Bearsden Academy is working towards being a
fully recognised Rights Respecting School.
What happens next?
•
•
•
•
•
•
Pupils will start to see rights displayed around the school and in classes.
There will be more focus on rights at assemblies throughout the session.
The BAnner will publicise information on the Rights Respecting School Award.
There will be specific whole school events to promote the rights of the child.
Bearsden Academy will link with a school in Africa to learn about their way of life.
If pupils want to get involved further, they can go along to the Pupil Leadership committee which
meets every Monday at 1.15pm in room F036.
Congratulations
We were delighted to learn that Sam Wardrop, S4, had been
selected to play for Scotland U16s. Sam, who is part of the
Celtic U17 squad, played in the Scottish team which beat
Wales 2 - 0 on October 5th and again in the team which
played Northern Ireland on 26th October. Unfortunately this
game ended with a 2-1 victory for the visitors.
We congratulate Sam on the honour of representing his
country at this level and hope that we will see him in a
Scotland shirt for many more years to come

Iceland Trip
by Bethany Aitken, Hilary Cubie, Hayley Saunders. (S6)
On the 30th September, a group of 26
Geography students and 4 teachers set off on a
trip to Iceland. We had been waiting a year for
this experience, so when we gathered at
Glasgow Airport, we were all extremely
excited. We arrived safely after a two hour
flight and were met at the airport by our coach
driver, Yon, who loaded our luggage and took
us straight to the Blue Lagoon. This is an
outdoor geothermally heated pool which
reaches temperatures of over 40 degrees
Celsius. We could put on a natural facemask
and enjoy relaxing in the water for a couple of
hours as the sun set. The water contains a lot
of sulphur, which is supposedly very good for
the skin but which doesn’t smell too good!!!
We enjoyed a visit to the volcano Eyjafjallajokull which caused the ash cloud in 2010. Our tour
guide, Linda, tried to teach us to pronounce its name, as well as telling us many interesting facts
about Iceland including some of the folklore.
We also enjoyed a glacier walk, and although some of us were nervous on the ice at first, we soon
became used to our crampons and ice-axes. This was great fun and the instructors got us to take part
in a competition to see who could chop out the biggest chunk of ice in a short time.
We visited several incredible waterfalls, one of which we were even able to walk behind! We also
spent some time on a black sandy beach and climbed onto the basalt pillars for a group photograph.
This gave us the chance to see amazing coastal scenery. From here we went to an earthquake
simulator where we felt what it was like to experience a 6.8 magnitude earthquake in the dark – Mrs
Zaoui screamed the loudest!!!
We thoroughly enjoyed the trip and took many photographs. Unfortunately, we didn’t see the
Northern Lights, but we enjoyed the trip so much, that gives us an excuse to go back!

Hallowe’en Party
photos by Andrew Perry, S6
On Hallowe’en, a weird selection of humanity—were they
all even human?—made its way into the school for the S6
Hallowe’en event. From the elegance of Audrey Hepburn,
or the grandeur of an Admiral of the fleet, through well
loved characters like Dorothy, from the Wizard of Oz to
Jack and Victor from Still Game, to the inevitable dregs of
society, sketetons, vampires and vagabonds. The ingenuity
and inventiveness of our pupils knows no bounds. Some
were gruesome and hideously disfigured, others were silly
but effective—two bananas and a hot dog anyone?? Ghosts and gangsters, cowboys,
superheroes, cats, John McEnroe look a likes, Caecilius & Metella, from the Latin book, a
suitcase (you had to be there to appreciative the cleverness of that one) a headless man. It
was amazing.
Prizes finally went to Jack and Victor, the upside down man and Spongebob A great night!
Well done to the S6 events committee for superb organisation.

French Exchange 2012
by Niamh Chalmers & Thomas Wilson
The day had finally arrived for French Exchange and the excitement, despite beginning the journey at
6.15am, was among everyone as we set off for the long, yet memorable 26 hour journey to Saint
Malo. Driving to Portsmouth passed surprisingly quickly, though it was clear we were all looking
forward to getting off the coach and onto the ferry as we would actually have the ability to move
around! Sleeping on the ferry was not the easiest of tasks but most of us managed eventually and in
the morning we were almost there.
We arrived at Lycée Jacques Cartier in the early hours of Saturday morning and were greeted by our
partners and their families. The rest of Saturday was spent settling in and spending time with our
hosts- many of us visited Intra Muros, the town centre of Saint Malo.
On Sunday we all went on a bike ride around the pretty town of
Dinan. It was nice to spend time with the group as a whole and
get to know other
people. Many of us still
hadn’t completely
caught up on our sleep
but the cycle was
somehow very
refreshing. The rest of
the afternoon was spent
with individual
partners as we relaxed
in preparation for the busy week ahead.
Monday in particular was very eventful- breakfast in the school
and then a short quiz requiring us to walk around the whole
school and see it for the first time. This was followed by a tour
around Intra Muros, part of which was on top of the ramparts
which had a really amazing view. After this we returned to Dinan
for another tour while walking around the old French streets and
shops and admiring the Clock Tower. Finally we went back to
Saint Malo for the Civic reception at l’Hôtel de Ville.
Page 7
Issue 3
Tuesday was the day in Rennes beginning with a
short guided tour of the town and then we were
given 3 hours of free time to spend shopping or
simply walking around. There was little rain on
this day so everyone enjoyed it! On the journey
back, we stopped off at a French supermarket
which we actually found exciting because it was
the first time we’d been in one!
The highlight of the trip was
Wednesday, when we went to
Mont Saint Michel. Firstly we
visited the abbey after
climbing many, many steps- however the view
of the bay at the top made it worth it! Then we
were given time to visit all the shops to buy
souvenirs before lunch. This was followed by
the unforgettable crossing of the bay through
rivers and quicksand! The crossing was long but
the weather was nice and we were all appreciating our last full day
in France.
Finally to finish the day off there
was a soirée back at Lycée
Jacques Cartier with galettes and
crêpes- some of us even had a go
at making some! Photos of the
exchange were then shown and
everyone remembered all the
good times.
It was an emotional goodbye and end to an amazing trip
as we set off on Thursday morning back home. Everybody had a great time and so thank you to Mrs
Grehan, Miss Fleming, Mrs McIntyre and Mrs Mackay for organising such a fantastic trip!

Battle of the Bands
photos by Andrew Perry, S6
On Tuesday 30th October, a small but appreciative audience gathered to hear enthusiastic and
polished performances from bands featuring Bearsden Academy pupils. This event was open to
pupils in all year groups and those who had come along were treated to fine performances. A judging
panel of Mrs Bryce, Miss Nelson and Mr Stewart (Design Technology) had the difficult task of
selecting the eventual winners. The decision had to be made, however, and Red Fez, which includes
Robbie Blair, Iain McColl, and Alex Trew from Bearsden Academy, was declared to be the winner
on the night.
Thanks to all the performers who made it such an enjoyable night and thank, too, to those who turned
out and gave the bands the experience of playing before a real live audience.

Art & Design Department
It has been an exciting time in the Art and Design department since the last edition of the BAnner
due to lots of fantastic activities and pupils achieving great success. Here is an update on what’s been
happening.
Advanced Higher SQA Exhibition
Siobhan McLaughlin’s Advanced Higher folio was selected
during SQA marking in June to appear in the exhibition as one
of the best folios from the whole of Scotland. This event was
held at Williamwood High School in Glasgow prior to the
October holidays. A group of our current Advanced Higher
students went to visit the exhibition and were inspired and in
awe at the fantastic range of work on display. The event is an
excellent opportunity to display examples of best practice from
all over Scotland. The event is now in its second year and
Bearsden Academy student folios have featured each year. We
aim to continue this great success.
S2 Muse Development Design Project
Last session the company Muse
Developments set our then first years
students the challenge of designing fence
panels that would eventually be fabricated
in wrought iron and used around the
perimeter of the new housing development
beside the school. The brief asked for
designs to reflect Bearsden and the local
surroundings. All 1st years participated in
this design project. On completion a
shortlisted selection of entries was
submitted to Muse for consideration. The
company were delighted with the high
standard of entries and found it difficult
selecting only five winners. However, after much deliberation, they awarded certificates and Art
Store gift vouchers worth £50 each, to Fiona Rattray, Inayah Sharif, Caitlin Henderson, Ian Stuart
and Kirsty Clark. Congratulations and well done to everyone..
Muse Developments also awarded a certificate and prize to Fergus Tibbs
for his brick sculpture design. His design was based on the shapes and
structure of the old St. Andrews College that was demolished prior to the
new Bearsden Academy being built. Fergus recently returned to the
department to speak to the current Advanced Higher class about applying
to Art School and preparing a folio as he has just recently started at
Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design, Dundee. On this day he
was also awarded with his prize. The department really enjoyed and
appreciated Fergus’s visit and wish him well at Art School.

Higher Photography
Congratulations to Andrew Perry and Sean Corbett from Higher Photography as images that they had
taken during a recent Photography field trip appeared in The Evening Times newspaper as their
Picture of the Day.
Art and Design Exhibition
The department is currently preparing for our annual exhibiti9on of S5/6 SQA work from last
session. The exhibition will take place on Thursday 22nd November between 18.30 -20.00 and is
open to pupils, parents, families and friends. We hope that you are able to come along to see the
fantastic collection of work from our students.
History and Psychology Exam Success!
Congratulations to those who succeeded in last spring’s exams. 73% of those sitting Standard Grade
in history achieved a credit level pass. At Higher, 73% of candidates achieved an “A” grade. These
are tremendous results, and reflect the hard work of those involved.
In Higher Psychology, over 50% of pupils achieved a Grade A. A special congratulations goes to
Erin McCrossan, who achieved 100% in the exam and 100% in the research investigation. This was
the highest result in Scotland and Erin is now due to be awarded the British Psychological Society
Award for top-performing psychology students. Well Done!

What’s New In History?
School life has certainly changed over the centuries, as a group of S4 pupils discovered on a recent
visit to New Lanark.
New Lanark is a village developed in the early 1800s by mill owner Robert Owen who wanted to
provide his workers with better working and living conditions than were normal elsewhere in the
country. The village is seen as being of exceptional historical significance, and in 2001 was declared
a World Heritage Site by the United Nations. We were visiting in support of studies towards
Standard Grade qualifications.
Our day was packed full of information and experiences.
Expert guides led us around the village. In the mill
buildings we saw the type of machines that workers,
including children, would have experienced. We moved
on to the village shop, where we learned how Owen had
developed a system that inspired the Cooperative
Movement. Finally we were taken into examples of the
mill workers’ homes of two hundred years ago. There
wasn’t a lot of space!
A centrepiece of New Lanark’s visitor centre is the Annie Macleod Ride,
in which we sat in roller-coaster style cars that transported us back into
the past through the use of audio and holograms. The cars didn’t move
fast enough to be scary though! We also enjoyed another theatrical
holographic presentation featuring characters from the future reflecting on
the lasting impact of Owen’s efforts at New Lanark.
Perhaps the most memorable part of the trip was our visit to the
schoolroom that Owen built to provide a basic standard of education for
the children of his workers. As the pictures above show, everyone tried
on the smocks that would have been worn in the school in the 1800s and
we sat in rows on hard wooden benches. Not all learning was done this
way back then, as we also saw the area where children were taught dancing as musicians played. We
didn’t do any dancing!
Finally, there was just enough time to visit the sweetie shop and spend some money before we all got
back on the bus and returned to Bearsden. There’s no doubt that those on the visit can now better
understand issues surrounding historical working and living conditions, and that there was also
plenty of fun to be had along with the learning.

European Day of Languages
by Katrina Glencross, Katie McNeill and Bethan Chalmers (1F)
As part of European Day of Languages S1 pupils took part in
a treasure hunt. We were given a sheet of questions and along
with the question there was a location in the school where the
answer was. We went left, right and centre, trying to find the
answers. If the questions were too hard and no-one in the class
knew the answer, then we had to go to a particular area of the
school where a teacher was waiting to help
Our class was very successful at this task as we won! The
questions varied from easy to difficult. The questions included:
“what is the French word for hat?” “ what language does the
word ‘cookie’ come from?” There were some about Capital
cities and some about the population of countries. We also had
to work out calculations and do some problem solving.
The pressure sometimes made your mind go blank even with the easiest of
questions! This was an interesting way to learn more facts about Europe.
Our prize was fantastic! Instead of having a period of French, we watched a film and ate sweets!
Everybody thoroughly enjoyed this activity.
We wish we could do it all again!

Remembrance Day
Senior pupils in the History Department organised and led Assemblies on Remembrance for each
year group. A thought provoking presentation was given by Joe Gardner, Nina Storrie, Chloe
Roome, Nathaniel Collins, Julia Muir, Jessica Docherty (all S5). A poetry competition was held,
with the winning poems read out at assemblies. Well done to the winners!

Do you remember?
The war
The dreadful past
The Fallen men of war
Remembered as heroes
But forgotten as men
Do you remember?

The shadow that was cast
The Fallen men of war

Placed in an alien world
Of hate and death
Disease and misery
Do you remember?

The deaths what were revealed

Did You Think?
by Catriona Nairn 3rd year
Did you give it a second’s thought?
When you sent all those young men to fight?
Did you think about their families?
Not knowing if they were safe at night
Did you think about the damage?
And how this poor boy would feel
Did you think about how he would cope?
Long after the injuries had healed
Did you think he would be the same?
That he would just move on?
After all the things that he has seen
He’d be OK once all scars had gone?
The fallen men of war
Turned to killing machines
Told to forget
Forget their fear
Forget home
Forget love
Forget humanity
Step over corpses and
Walk into the gunfire
Victims on both sides
Told to fight for courage
To die for pride
The fallen men of war
Remembered as heroes
Forgotten as men
Maybe you have realised now
Not all scars you can see
And though we must honour the dead
We should help those who lost so much…finally be

School Captains Morven Macaualy and Dougie Morton represented the school at the service of
remembrance at the War memorial at Bearsden Cross on Sunday 11th and laid a wreath on behalf of

Mo’vember (that’s the time to
focus on Modern Studies!)
With less than 30 days to S4 Prelims, it’s time
to start thinking about exam preparation! All
S4 pupils have taken up the offer of 2 revision
folders to support their home-study
programme and these folders are on loan until
after the SQA exam in May 2012. A good way
to use these folders is to study a topic and
create revision mind maps in colour of the key
pieces of information. Pupils should then find
a question in their past papers folder and try to
answer the question – bring in the answer and ask you teacher to mark it! Supported Study on
Tuesday lunchtime is a great place to get ideas about study techniques and top tips on answering
questions in the exam. Come along and join the other pupils in F050 – it’s never too late to start!
Each pupil has a target tracking sheet and should use this to identify the area they feel least confident
with, that’s the topic to spend extra time revising. Good luck!
Democracy in Scotland
For 15 pupils in S3 Modern Studies, democracy in Scotland is alive and kicking! They have been
working on the role of both the Scottish Parliament and local government, such as East
Dunbartonshire Council, in representing local people –
of all ages. We have welcomed Gil Paterson, MSP for
Clydebank & Milngavie to our class with a very
interesting Q&A session, followed by a visit to
Holyrood and First Minister’s Questions on the 1st
November. This was a great opportunity to see MSPs in
action and how they make the First Minister of Scotland
account for his actions or inaction. Then Councillor
Duncan Cumming presented to the pupils the work of a
local councillor so that they could compare the roles of a
MSP to a councillor. In 2013 it will be the turn of other
elected representatives to be put under the microscope!
Parental Workshop: Health and Wellbeing
Miss L Smith, Health and Wellbeing Committee
The Health and Wellbeing Committee are going to be hosting a workshop for parents and carers of
our S1 and S2 pupils next February. This will be an informal session which will provide information
on how the outcomes for Health and Wellbeing are being delivered within Bearsden Academy. There
will be different themes explored in relation to both physical and emotional health, with the option of
various workshops to attend. More details will follow in future editions of the BAnner. In the
meantime, if you have any queries/suggestions in relation to this, please contact the school.
