Kent School District’s Pathways documents serve as a resource for school instructional teams in the aligned use of assessment, data-based
decision-making, research-based instructional strategies and resources to plan proactively for the academic success of all students. Through the tiered
intervention model supported through Pathways, KSD staff will provide high quality instruction and appropriate academic interventions to meet the
needs of each student.
Benchmark (Tier 1) grade-level instruction and core curriculum resources are intended for ALL students. Culturally responsive Tier 1 instruction,
guided by ongoing classroom formative assessment, should meet the needs of the vast majority of students. When a student is not making expected
progress with Tier 1 instruction, additional tiers of intervention provide supplemental support targeted at identified student needs.
Strategic (Tier 2) interventions are intended to be short-term in duration, with progress monitoring assessments guiding the type and duration of
needed supports.
Intensive (Tier 3) interventions are for students performing significantly below standards who have not adequately responded to high quality
instruction at Tier 1 and 2. Tier 3 interventions are characterized by increased frequency, intensity, and duration based on targeted assessments that
analyze the lack of responsiveness to interventions provided at the other tiers. While ideally Tier 3 intervention may support or enhance instruction at
another tier, in some cases it may be substituted for a portion of Tier 1 or 2 instructions.
Supplemental strategic or intensive instruction is intended to be delivered to students based on data-driven needs and not based on program
identification. While ELL or Special Education program students may receive Tier 2 or Tier 3 services, they would not necessarily warrant these
interventions based on their identification in these programs. For students with an IEP, specially designed instruction may fulfill Tier 2 or Tier 3
instructional needs; special education and general education teams should work collaboratively to make these determinations.
