October Speaker
Nicholas D. Cardwell, PhD
Director of Engineering
Bractlet
Dr. Cardwell is mechanical engineer/scientist who relishes solving challenging problems, developing cutting-edge new technologies, and enabling product improvement. After attending The University of Texas at Tyler and receiving at B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, he attended graduate school at Virginia Tech, specializing in
mass and heat transfer. Nick has 5+ years of experience (post PhD) applying computational and experimental expertise in heat transfer and fluid dynamics for energy, aerospace/defense, medical device, and pharmaceutical manufacturing applications. His current role as Director of Engineering at Bractlet includes strategic planning, building energy
modeling (BEM), statistical & analytical modeling, and sub-metering hardware development.
October Presentation
Energy Modeling & Analytics - Big Data Equals Big Savings
Energy modeling is the virtual simulation of a building and, at the most detailed level, focuses on energy consumption by
the various equipment needed for operation. Understanding consumption at the equipment level, however, requires
more detailed data than utility bills can supply. While useful, even high-frequency interval utility data is insufficient when
modeling large, complex commercial buildings. More frequent monitoring (or sub-metering) of energy-using systems,
compared to factors such as weather, work force, and building operation, leads to the development of more sophisticated analytics—analytics capable of accurately predicting energy use/cost given the application of energy savings
measures. Driven by real-time building data, much needed insight can be provided to identify and triage the greatest
energy saving measures.
Bractlet was founded in 2011 on the vision of creating a world where buildings only use the resources they require.
Founded by a team of engineers hailing from Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Bractlet is now headquartered in beautiful Austin,
Texas. The company innovates at the cutting edge of monitoring and analytics technology to deliver next-generation
solutions for the energy efficiency market and make energy waste a thing of the past. Bractlet combines accurate data
collection with detailed, accurate, and predictive understanding of commercial building energy use, from the meter down
to the equipment-level.

Participants please DO NOT PLACE PHONE ON HOLD (or we all will hear your music). It would be a
good idea to MUTE your line after you get in. Please press * 6 to MUTE. When you want to talk, then
UNMUTE by pressing * 6 again, and then you can talk. This will lower background noise on the conference line.

Engineer Needed...
Celtic Energy, a nationally recognized leader in energy and sustainability consulting, is expanding its business in the Texas market
and seeking the services of a Registered Texas Professional Engineer for contract or part time work. Qualified candidates should
also possess a CEM, CMVP, or construction industry certifications, and be capable of doing quality oversight work on energy efficiency projects. Experience with mechanical/electrical energy efficiency analysis is needed, and some in-state travel is required. Position is immediately available and interested candidates should contact Walt Donzila at [email protected]
or 860-882-1515.
Donation Ideas
As we move forward to the fall season, not only will we begin to enjoy cooler temperatures but also holiday festivities
shared with friends and family. In what has become a tradition for the Austin-San Antonio chapter, the spirit of the
holidays is brought to those in need by a donation. Chapter President Frank Richards is looking for ideas and recommendations from membership for non-profit organizations that would benefit from a donation. Past donations have
included Wounded Warrior Foundation and Duchanese. Please contact Frank at [email protected] with
your ideas and suggestions. THANK YOU!!!

Understanding Engineers...Take 10
Powers of Concentration
If there is one trait that best defines an engineer it is the ability to concentrate on one
subject to the complete exclusion of everything else in the environment. This sometimes causes engineers to be pronounced dead prematurely. Some funeral homes in
high-tech areas have started checking resumes before processing the bodies. Anybody with a degree in electrical engineering or experience in computer programming
is propped up in the lounge for a few days just to see if he or she snaps out of it. .
