Animal Antics - Science
In this project, pupils will learn about fossils, and why
they are important in relation to learning about animals
from the past.
The pupils will explore the specialism of palaeontology and
how these experts find out information about creatures
that lived long ago,
Children will also investigate possible theories for the
extinction of the dinosaurs, using researched information
from fossils.
Mining for Minors
History & Local geography
In this project, pupils will learn about the history of
mining from the Victorian period including working
conditions through to the current mining environment of
today.
Children will look specifically at the local history of
mining, including areas of land and development that used
to be mining areas and the changes in the physical
geography.
Children will also investigate the political history of
mining including the mining strike, conflicts with police,
the presentation of this in the press, political policy and
the in particular the effect this had on families.
Children will be investigating the consequences (both
positive and negative)
of the
closure of
the mines,
Religious
Education
(RE)
including economical, sociological
and
ecological
(e.g.
Buddhism
sources of energy/clean sources of energy).
Children will be learning about the Life and Universe and
identify the following:
- Identify some profound questions
- Suggest what the follower of the Buddha would answer
to these profound questions
- Discuss Buddha’s way of reducing suffering using
compassion and meditation

Maths
Fractions:
- Compare and order fractions whose denominators
are multiples of the same number.
- Identify, name and write equivalent fractions of a
given fraction, represented visually including tenths
and hundredths.
- Recognise mixed numbers and improper fractions
and convert from one form to the other .
- Add and subtract fractions with the same
denominator and denominators that are multiples of
the same number.
- Read and write decimal numbers as fractions [ for
example 0.71 = 71/100 ].
 Decimals:
- Read, write, order and compare numbers with up
to three decimal places.
- Recognise and use thousandths and relate them to
tenths, hundredths and decimal equivalents.
- Round decimals with two decimal places to the
nearest whole number and to one decimal place.
- Multiply and divide whole numbers and those
involving decimals by 10, 100 and 1000.
Physical Education (PE)
French & eTwinning
Gymnastics & Health Related Fitness
eTwinning offers an opportunity for year 5 to
communicate, collaborate, develop projects and share
experiences with other school children around the
world.
This half term, children will be learning about
health related fitness.
Pupils will build up understanding of the
different exercises that create a circuit and
that will enhance general fitness.
Currently, year 5 are involved in an eTwinning project
with schools from France, Italy and Spain.
