The Carden Courier
Fall 2008
Letter from the Headmaster
Annie Little, Arianne Grimes, Karin Fuller
Mr. Taylor is very kind and uplifting to others and he really cares about every single student,
and he wants us to be successful in life. We can all tell that he loves teaching here at Carden
School because he has been the headmaster for eight years. Seeing him every day really makes
us feel good, knowing he is there to answer our questions and hear our concerns. As students
we are grateful for what he has done to help our school.
Dear Students,
Now that the first term has come to a close, let me take a moment to let you know how pleased I am with the effort this year. With the
introduction of our online grading system, I have seen our upper grade
students working harder to get their things one time, and I have noticed
that the quality of work has improved. With out younger students, I have
been so pleased that the spirit of Carden is alive and well. Your greetings
and your smiles tell me that you are having a wonderful year and you are
happy. I can’t think of a better place to work and I love seeing all of you
at Carden.
Mr. Taylor

In the halls and classrooms of Carden Memorial School, something mysterious has happened. There were five pictures taken around
the school but we don’t know where they
came from! We need detectives to help us find
where they are. This will test your determination. Race with your friends to find where the
pictures came from. Good luck!

Fall Carnival
The Fall Carnival was a wonderful success.
All of the students and kids seemed to have a
good time. D-Form and E-Form did a fabulous job of creating a fun environment for the
kids and having exciting games for the kids to
play. We hope everybody had a good time.
John Bytheway
At the assembly, Mr. Bytheway toldus entertaining life stories about his scouting trips
as a teenager. He told us the tale and related
it to an influential life lesson to “Keep Your
Pack Light.” He had a funny sense of humor
and we were very excited to have him at our
school.
Dr. Doolittle
This month, the A-Form presented Dr.
Doolittle. This clever play was projected very
well and kept us entertained throughout. They
sang cute songs and had very interesting costumes.

Mrs. Neff is the middle of seven children
(five sisters, two brothers). She has lived
in North Carolina, Ohio, Washington, and
Utah. She remembers from her childhood
eight boys adn girls that became her friends
when she moved to a new place. Mrs. Neff’s
favorite teacher was Mr.s Evans in 2nd grade
that always had fun games for learning. She
attended Skyline High School here in Utah.
Her favorite subjects were history and music
but she disliked science.
Mrs. Neff loves the color green. She enjoys eating fresh peaches especially in pie,
pizza with ranch, different kinds of breads,
and chocolate chip cookies. Her favorite ice
cream flavor is Ben and Jerry’s oatmeal cookie crunch. She likes to spend her time singing,
acting, and watching old movies. Her favorite
movies are the Jane Austen movies. Watching
sports, fly-fishing, and camping are things she
loves to do with her husband. She describes
herself as pretty easy going, mild mannered,
and a perfectionist.
If Mrs. Neff had a whole day to herself,
she would go on day trips to Park City and
drive up the canyon. She also would like to
spend her time watching movies. If she could
travel anywhere, she would go to England,
South America, New Zealand, the Alps, and
Austria.
Mrs. Neff teaches music to grades one
through six with Mrs. Foster. She has been
teaching piano sinc eshe was a sophomore
in high school
and voice since
she was married
three years ago.
She sings high
soprano, performs in theaters
and operas,
composes, and
plays the piano.
Mrs. Neff is a
phenomenal
teacher.
BOOK REVIEWS
The Diamond of
Darkhold
Alex Atherley
The Diamond of Darkhold is the fourth
book in the City of Ember series, and is continued after the second book, The People of
Sparks. It’s a great book to read if you’re in
need of adventure and discovery.
The author, Jean DuPrau has a wonderful
imagination, and has created a world that is
recovering from disaster and troubling times.
The lives and feelings of those caught up in
this epic quest to figure out this mystery are
beautifully described and has surprise on every page
It takes a few chapters to get into the action, but it’s worth the read, and an excellent conclusion to the series, leaving room to
imagine the rest within your own mind.
The Alchemist: The
Secrets of the Immortal Nicholas Flamel
Benjamin Westover
The Alchemist is the first book
in the Nicholas Flamel series. It is a
good read for 4th grade level reading and higher. It is a great story for
those in search of a book that is full
of suspense and action in every page.
Michael Scott tells really well how
the mythologies of the world came to
be. I would recommend this book to
all those avid readers and to those that
are lookign for a good read that is not
too long. Tune in next time for the review of the second exciting book in
the series, The Magician.

THE STORY OF
MAXINA
The somnambulist was on the Island of Oon.
He found the mausoleum of Maxina. The
somnambulist then reincarnated Maxina.
Once Maxina was alive again she sought out
the appendaged man. Once Maxina found
the appendaged man she deappendaged him
in a ballyhoo. The appendageless man is the
only person who has seen Maxina. Then the
somnambulist got on a tricycle and circumvented the appendageless man. In order to
get to the island of Oon safely you need
to take a flotilla to oppose the brouhaha of
fish protecting the island. The island has a
labyrinth of festoon around it. This labyrinth
leads to Maxinaville (the present day ghost
town that Maxina destroyed). The whereabouts of the island are undisclosed.

The Ant
Sarah Peterson, Upper Prep
The ant is small, it has three body parts,
the head, the thorax, and the abdomen. The
ant has huge jaws, that can carry heavy
things. The main colors of ants we usually
see are black and red.
Ants make their home deep under ground,
they do not stop until the hill is done. A
queen ant rules each hill. She lays all the
eggs. Some ants take care of the baby ants,
and some gather food.
Bees and ants are very hard workers. They
both have a queen. They both make their
own home. Bees fly. Ants crawl.

This is the Place
Heritage Park
Christian Carman, Upper Prep
On September 16, 2008 Upper Prep visited
This is the Place Heritage Park. First we
went to the Pine Valley Chapel to discover
and learn about animal tracks. Next we went
to a teepee where we ground corn on rocks.
After the teepee we visited a pioneer house
to see animal furs. Then we went to the tinsmith and watched him make a tin cup. For
our last experience we traveled around the
entire park on a train.
Patriotism
Yanni Cayais
Patriotism means many things to many
people. Most definitions include words such
as “the love of one’s country,” or “a devotion
to one’s country.”
My idea of patriotism is someone who is
loyal to their country and who follows the
rules and obeys the laws of the country. Respect for one another also shows patriotism.
The way we choose the leaders of our country is called voting. Because we live in a free
country, we are allowed to help decide who
our leaders will be. We show our patriotism
by making sure that we take the time to vote
when we become old enough. Being involved
in politics and the process of choosing our
leaders is an important way to show that we
are patriotic.
Sometimes the leaders of our country must
send many of our citizens to war to protect
our nation. These citizens become faithful
and loyal soldiers, and some of them give
their lives to protect our freedom. They are
the ultimate patriots! We should always remember to thank them and honor them. This
is the best way to show our patriotism.
I f Pe o p le in th e U S D id n ’t C o o p e ra te
Kaitlyn Iwasaki, D-Form
If people in the United States didn’t cooperate then there would be chaos. The streets
would be filled with people fighting, stealing
and vandalizing. We wouldn’t have any laws
because people wouldn’t respect them anyway. Without cooperation, we wouldn’t move
forward as a nation.
All these things are important in our country because if we didn’t have cooperation we
wouldn’t have a safe civilization. With cooperation, America is strong. We came together
after 9/11 terrorist attacks. We pulled together
through some pretty bad times in our country’s history with cooperation.
Recently, we needed the cooperatino of
Congress to pass a bill to help the country.
Things went bad because Democrats and Republicans would not cooperate so they could
help the people. They needed to cooperate to
help us get through bad times with the banks
and stock market. Many people have lost
their jobs, and people can’t get money that
they need to help their families.
Cooperation needs to happen for the U.S.
because if we don’t we can’t get anything
done that’s good. We need cooperation so
that we have laws, rights, and so we can be
safe. With the cooperation of many people,
we get more done than if we try to do things
by ourselves. Being a part of a nation that cooperates gives us power to help ourselves and
other countries where there isn’t cooperation.
We help them build a democracy and establish order so that they can also live a peaceful
life like ours.
I can’t imagine our country without cooperation. We would be living in a war zone.
There would not be any schools, hospitals, or
any government. Sometimes it’s hard to cooperate but if we work to do what’s best for
the people, we can all benefit.
Dear Friend,
When I read about your problem, I imagined myself in your shoes. One thing you
can try is talking to this friend, they might
not know that they are acting this way. Just
explain to them how you feel. If that doesn’t
work, try talking to your other friends, and
don’t be afraid to make new ones.
Hope this helps,

Dear E-Form,
I have wanted a turtle for a long time. My
mother says if I raise the money myself I can
get one. Do you have any ideas?
Dear Friend,
We have come up with a few ideas to help
you out. 1) You can always ask your parents
for extra chores around the house, like taking out the garbage or washing the dishes. 2)
You can make things with objects around the
house and sell them. 3) Make Christmas cards
and sell them.
Hope this helps,

Dear E-Form,
How do you keep your classes organized?
How do you maintain your grades while
keeping your social life?
organized. Another thing to remember is not
to carry loose papers in your binder. Do our
assignments when they’re given, if you have
a busy night, do the make-up work ASAP!
Do your homework, and then you can go
hang out with your friends. Schoolwork first,
friends after. Stay focused; friends are what
weekends are for. If you have to study for a
big test, get some friends from that class, and
create a study group. This only works if you
actually work!

Dear E-Form,
What is a good way to react if someone
hurts your feelings? How do you tell if your
friend is a true friend or not?
Dear Friend,
If you care about that friend, talk to them
about the situation. Get things in the air. It
doesn’t do any good to keep it bottled up inside. But while you’re talking it out, take their
feelings into consideration, and don’t overdo
it. If it’s a friend you’re not so fond of, listen
to John Bytheway and, “Don’t put it in your
bag.”
As all 8th graders know, change will come.
True friends are with you through thick and
thin, trying to do what’s best for you. Friends
will come and go all throughout your life.
Don’t be disappointed if they travel on without you and you both go seperate ways.
Hope this helps,
