How old do I have to be before I can take the
GED® Test?
Testers must be at least 17 years of age, officially
withdrawn from high school (only for students
17 and younger) and a resident of Illinois for at least
30 days. Or 16 years of age and have successfully
completed an Alternative Education Program or
be enrolled in a Youth Education Program such as
the IL National Guard. Court orders are considered
by ICCB on a case-by-case basis.
How do I prepare for the GED® Test?
Attend a class at IVCC, study online or attend
an off-campus site. For registration information,

Do you offer night classes?
Yes. Day and night classes are available, or one-toone tutoring may be arranged to fit your schedule.
Do I have to attend GED classes?
No. But, we strongly suggest getting an assessment
at one of our GED preparation sites. Statistically,
more students are successful at passing the GED
test after attending GED preparation classes.
If I decide to attend classes, how long will it take
before I am ready to take the GED® Test?
We offer several assessment tools to determine
grade level and then help you set a realistic timeline
for passing the GED Test. The TABE test determines
grade level, and the Official GED® Ready practice
test gives insight into you might score on the actual
GED test.
How much do GED preparation classes cost?
All GED classes and the materials that you will
use are provided FREE!!
What are the content areas covered on the GED
test?
Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical
Reasoning, Social Studies, Science
Do I have to take the Constitution exam?
In addition to the four GED subtests, Illinois
residents are required to pass a Constitution
examination. GED Test applicants must have
verification of passing the Constitution Test at
the time of sign-up or schedule a test by calling
Cindy at 815-224-0358.

Is there a fee to take the GED test?
Yes. In Illinois, the individual test fee is $30 for each
subtest. The total fee for GED testing is $120. (subject to
change)
Can I get help with paying the GED test fee?
Yes. Check GED.com for special promotions and discounts,
local social service providers and adult education programs
have systems in place to help students who qualify.
How is the 2014 GED Test series different from the 2002
series?
Format: GED Test takers must register online and take the
GED test at an official test center on a computer.
Content: The 2014 test includes content changes that have
been aligned with the Common Core Standards. CCS are
academic basics students K-12th grade are expected to learn.
Can I retake portions of the test that I did not pass?
Yes. The retest fee for each test is $10. (subject to change)
What does GED stand for?

Is getting my GED really as good as a high school
diploma?
Yes. The High School Equivalency (formerly GED)
certificate is recognized nationwide by most employers,
colleges and military branches as a high school
equivalency.
