Chief Dan George Playground is planned for renewal
and we would like to hear what you would like to see
in the park. The goal of the playground improvement
project is to incorporate creative new play features
into an inclusive park that serves the needs of the
neighbourhood.

Park History
My Heart Soars
The Park you see now was adapted from the original
park plan in 1971. The original park did not contain
play equipment, however it did highlight the beautiful
trees that can be found in the park today. At one time
there was a stream in this location.
The beauty of the trees,
the softness of the air,
the fragrance of the grass,
speaks to me.
The park was originally called Park 23, but was
renamed Tyee Ts’ Etsawanxw in 1974 after Chief Dan
George.
The summit of the mountain,
Chief Dan George (1899-1981) was Chief of the TsleilWaututh Nation (Formerly called the Burrard Band)
from 1951-1963. He was an influential figure in Canada
who spoke on First Nations and environmental issues.
Among his great number of accomplishments are
being an officer of the Order of Canada, a celebrated
Hollywood actor who was nominated for an Oscar, an
Author and a Poet.
Chief Dan George wrote
and orated his most
famous speech “Lament for
Confederation” for Canada’s
100th birthday.
the thunder of the sky,
the rhythm of the sea,
speaks to me.
The faintness of the stars,
the freshness of the morning,
the dew drop on the flower,
speaks to me.

his writing is a poem called

And the life that never goes away,
They speak to me.

The Park Today
Today the park contains many mature trees, a climbing
structure, swing, and plastic ball hoop.
The park has numerous small hills amongst the trees.
We would like to retain all the trees except for two that
have structural deficiencies (trees located on concept
plan).
Large Sequoia trees /Giant Redwoods
We would like to move towards natural play for our
playground design encouraging interaction with
nature; unstructured play with greater use of the
imagination; capitalizing on locally sourced materials.
Existing climbing structure and seating node
Catalpa tree cluster around existing path
The concrete curb in the geometric shape is from the
original design.

Gathering Ideas
What looks the most fun? Add a dot to your favourite idea.
On April 13th and 14th we met in the park with a
daycare group and then a group of pre-schoolers to
ask them what they would like to see in the park.
We brought images showing a range of natural play
elements and asked them some questions:
What is the most fun thing you could do in this space?
What could you do here?
What looks the most fun?
What could these be used for?
We received many great ideas with comments, stars
and tick marks beside favourite items. Now it is your
turn...
On the following boards add a sticker by
the three items you would most like to see
in the park.

We have taken a first shot at putting some of the ideas
together. We worked with the following assumptions:
1. Save all of the healthy trees
Tunnel & Climbing wall
New tree
2. Keep some form from the original design.
3. Pay homage to Chief Dan George.
4. Make it fun using natural play opportunities.
