The first NSA business meeting of the 2016-17
orchestra season is the Tune-Up Meeting. All are
invited to attend — please bring friends and enjoy a
buffet supper starting at 6:30 pm.
After a short business meeting, we will hear
from Betsy Walch, TFO Development Officer & our
TFO Guild Liaison. Her topic will be “TFO 2016-17
Insider Preview,” see page 6 for more info about Betsy.
Our musical guest will be Lucas Guideri, Assistant
Principal Second Violin. Lucas
joined The Florida Orchestra
as assistant principal second
violin in 2010 and served as
acting principal second violin
of the orchestra in 2011. He is
currently on the faculty of the
Eastern Music Festival. He has performed with several
orchestras in New York, including the Westchester,
Long Island and Brooklyn Philharmonics and the New
It was just one year ago that The Florida Orchestra’s
new Musical Director Michael Francis came on board.
It resulted in a very successful season for the Orchestra
and for North Suncoast Associates. In addition to
scheduled concerts there
were other exciting events
for TFO in visiting hospitals,
malls and hosting the first
an nual Sing Out Tampa
Bay. Likewise, NSA had a
beautiful Christmas Gala,
many instrument petting zoo
events and a well-attended
and successful Bravura Brunch. We are looking
forward to another season of great music and enjoyable
social events.
We begin the 2016/17 season with several new
members on our NSA Board of Directors. Before we
get to them, however, we want to thank the “retiring”
board members who served NSA last season: Gisela
Bennie, Chris Cosdon, Connie Potts, Kathy McDougall,
Sally Trotter and Diane Wheatley Giliotti.
Now, on to the new Board Members they are: John
Getker, Recording Secretary; Beth Marshall, Treasurer;
Judy McSwine, Education/zoo and Joan Savage, Vice
President. We are pleased to have the opportunity to
work with them and the rest of the Board as we plan
for this year.
Speaking of people to thank, during this summer
there were several administrative matters that had to
be attended to involving Federal and State forms. We
want to acknowledge those who helped with these

tasks including Sally Trotter, Rick Tetrick, Lionel
Giliotti and Harry Bickford. Their efforts are greatly
appreciated.
As we embark on this exciting new Season, we
want to hear from NSA Members who have any
suggestions or items that they want to see addressed
this year. Please let us know of plans you feel are
important for NSA to work towards.
We look forward to serving in our new NSA position
as we all work to support and enjoy The Florida
Orchestra!

TFO “Dances Around the World”
for the young outpatients of Johns Hopkins All
Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg on Wednesday, May
18, 2016 under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor
Stuart Malina. Kids didn't have to stay in their seats for
this concert. They were encouraged to get up and move to
the music, which included Williams’ Imperial March from
Star Wars, Offenbach’s Can-Can, Strauss’ Champagne
Polka, Anderson’s Blue Tango and more. The free concert
was geared for outpatients, who visit the hospital for
ongoing care but are not admitted to the facility, and was
not open to the public.
THE INSTRUMENT PETTING ZOO
The immensely popular Instrument Petting Zoo
for children will now be coordinated by NSA member
Judy McSwine.
This program filled a need with local libraries
and community centers to introduce playable musical
instruments to hundreds of local children.
Through the organization, coordination, and hard
work of Connie Potts and Kathy McDougall, with the
help of their husbands, they grew this program into one
of TFO’s most popular community outreachs. This was
no small task as they stored, transported and set-up
the instruments and sound system. Then they would
disassemble the instruments, clean them, and return
them to storage. Now it is time for Connie and Kathy
to take a rest. Judy will be looking for volunteers to help
her carry on the project. No musical skills required.
Skilled grandparents are especially welcome.
Clayta Ross
Clayta Ross passed June 17, 2016. A reception
in honor of her life was held on July 14th. Clayta
Ross served two terms as NSA President. She
was a generous donor and
champion for the Florida
Orchestra and served on
TFO’s Board of Directors and
Board of Consultants. TFO
arranged and sponsored
a performance by a string
quartet featuring members
of TFO at her reception.
Donations to TFO in her
memory were designated to the General Annual
Fund or the Artistic Initiative Fund.
Sherrie Morton Tetrick
Sherrie Morton Tetrick passed away in May
2016 after suffering a lengthy illness. A Florida
Orchestra supporter and
NSA board member,
Sherrie published the
