Governments also wanted to put their countries in the best position after the war. • The war was mostly fought in France and the people there had suffered greatly. France wanted to make sure that it could never be invaded by Germany again • Britain had not been invaded, although the cost of the war in terms on lives and money spent had been great. Britain wanted to punish Germany, but also wanted to increase trade and expand its empire • America did not join the war until April, 1917. America is a long way from Europe and was least affected by the war, although America spent a lot of money and many American soldiers lost their lives 20 21
