RHYMING
Our Phonics focus for next week is rhyming words. This is quite a tricky skill to learn
and children need to develop their listening skills and ability to tune into sounds
before they will master this. An awareness of rhyme will really help your child when
they start to read in Reception class. In Nursery, we teach the children that
rhyming words sound the same at the end, but have different beginning sounds.
Try playing the Body Name Game together to help develop rhyming skills:How to Play: Point to parts of your body, say a rhyming word and help your child to
say the body part. Children love silly rhymes so you can make up nonsense silly
rhymes if you like. Once your child has mastered this, see if you can reverse roles
and they can make up the rhyming words.
Below are some examples of rhyming words that you could use in the game.
deer-ear snail-nail sack-back go-toe
gum-thumb
put-foot bye-eye deck-neck see-knee bear-hair
fin-chin band-hand peek-cheek farm-arm feel-heel
When your child rhymes body parts, play this game: “I know a word that rhymes
with deer, we use it to listen and the word is…… The children are familiar with this
from our Phonics time and will know to fill in the missing rhyming word.
Let us know on a postcard how you got on.
Maths
We have been focusing on ‘5’ as a magic number. We have using our fingers, blocks and
dots to see how many different ways we can make five. The children have loved playing
our game ‘how many are hiding?’ We have been exploring themes of adding, subtracting
and using lots of mathematical language as we play.
Next week
We have been learning about alliteration, so next week we will be turning our snack area
into an ‘alliteration café’. Each day we will be trying lots of different foods beginning
with the same sounds. For example, cake, carrots, corn. We will be asking the children
for suggestions on what you could have there each week. If your child’s dietary needs
have changed since starting at Nursery, or you suspect food intolerances or allergies
Nursery please let us know.
Mother’s Day
We hope you like the cards and keyrings. The children loved dying the paper during our
science week and have been excited to show you the end results. Thank you to Friends
of Masefield for supplying the keyring fobs.
Time To Talk
This week we have been learning about ‘where?’ We have been using language to
describe parts of Ginger’s body and to listen to and follow sets of instructions; such as
touch your shoulders, then your ears then wiggle your fingers. In our language groups
we have been learning more about positional language and playing question games from
our Nursery Narrative programme.
Polling Day 4th May 2017
There will be no Nursery provision on this day due to the Nursery building being used
as a Polling Station. Please note that the rest of the school will be open as usual.
As always...
