Wood-Fired Pizza on Margate’s seafront The Great British Pizza Company Sets Up Shop In Margate After three glorious months on Margate’s Harbour Arm, streetfood pop-up The Great British Pizza Company is finally opening a permanent venue – with a roof! The success of their first pop-up site, on Margate's Harbour Arm, has seen foodies flocking to this al-fresco eatery all through the summer, come rain or shine. In just three short months, even renowned food critic Marina O’Loughlin has recommended their joint to visitors. GB Pizza Co started out life in the back of a truck – a 1974 Volkswagen Campervan, to be precise. Touring farmers' markets, festivals and events in the Cotswolds since March of this year, the pair behind the mobile wood-fired pizza company – former magazine editors and also owners of an awardwinning gastropub – decided to put down roots in up-and-coming seaside town Margate. GB Pizza Co cooks delicious wood-fired pizzas – in just two minutes – using fresh, locally-sourced ingredients, their special recipe dough and a rich, slowcooked tomato sauce. Neopolitan in style – with a thin, crispy base and bubbling crust – the pizzas have been a huge hit in this exciting town since the pop-up launched in June. Now with a base – excuse the pizza pun – in Margate and with their eyes on other venues across the South-East, GB Pizza Co is growing fast. The new restaurant, formerly the town’s branch of Pizza Hut, ironically, overlooks the pristine sandy beaches and the Turner Contemporary and will be open throughout the week (Tuesday to Sunday) and will serve freshlymade, wood-fired pizza at lunch and dinner. The restaurant opens on Tuesday 9th October 2012. Alongside their acclaimed pizza, the restaurant is collaborating with renowned food and drink companies in the South East: wines are from Borough Wines (by the glass or bottle, to drink in, or to takeaway); gelato is by Soho-based Gelupo Gelato; coffee is made by the baristas of Shore Coffee UK with coffee roasted in Whitstable; after-dinner tipples are made by Howards of Kent; beer and fizz come from the Kentish vineyards of Chapel Down; meat is by renowned local purveyor Chandler & Dunn; apple juice comes from the nearby orchards of Little Stour. Margate, chosen as one of Mary Portas's 12 Pilot Towns, boasts a growing Old Town filled with independently-owned boutiques and cafés, as well as artists' studios and gallery spaces. Currently hosting hometown girl Tracey Emin's first ever Margate exhibition in the stunning new Turner Contemporary – just a pebble’s throw from GB Pizza Co – this classic British seaside town is on the up. And now with perfect slices being served up on its shores, there’s never been a better time to visit. 14a Marine Drive, Margate, Kent, CT9 1DH.
